from what i can gather:-- heavily declined from modest 70s boom?-- underfunded city infrastructure and public transit-- major issues with poverty-- simmering racial issues-- sprawling suburbs-- low cost of living makes it appealing to students or academics in underfunded fields? and writers and poets? "renowed for churning out poets and novelists" as anthony said. and they like the charming blue collar feel of the city?-- neil young lived there-- hometown of randy bachman, dave semenko, marshall mcluhan, john k samson

Anyway, we here in the newsroom at the Sun have spent some time coming up with all the unique things we love about Winnipeg. We came up with hundreds of ideas, then narrowed it down to what we feel is a fairly comprehensive list of 100. Enjoy!1. Legislature building. How many other cities have government buildings whose design is tied to the occult?2. Dancing Gabe. He's the life of the party at every pro sporting event in the city, getting the home crowd going with some slick footwork. And hey, we even heard about the guy crashing a wedding awhile back, too.3. Corydon Avenue patios. There are few better places to people-watch while sipping a beer than a table by the sidewalk at one of the many restaurants and lounges along the busy street.4. Nachos at Carlos and Murphy's. Taco chips. Salsa. Lots of melted cheese. 'Nuff said.5. Pic-a-Pop. What once was an only-in-Winnipeg discount pop of choice for many in the 1970s is now a high-end premium cola, complete with the old-school glass bottles, sold at locations throughout the country. Anyone else suddenly have a craving for an orange cola?
Enjoy!

these pictures from http://winnipeglovehate.com/ make the city look appealingsort of like a major prairie city that was a big deal when the railway went through and has beautiful abandoned brick buildings on an orderly deserted main street and a few transmission shops and a shuttered saan store on the outskirtsit looks like medicine hat? or edmonton's downtown half or maybe closest to dtes vancouver when you head way down hastings east

Been there once, some late fall/early winter. Reminded me of any mundane midwestern US city, plus we saw Neil Young's high school, went duckpin bowling, saw "Starship Troopers" and marvelled at the dubious presence of McPizza on the menu. Old band played a gig upstairs (?) from a strip club. The streets were awash in young people desperate for something to do. That night back at the hotel, there were people passed out -or dead? - in the hallway.

TOP 5 STRIP CLUBS IN WINNIPEGJust as Ken promised last week, I’ve compiled the Top 5 strip clubs (or Nudie Bars as Al from Married with Children would refer to them) in Winnipeg. Hit read more to check them out!5. BOOMERSBoomer’s is a staple in the St James/Westwood area. Any time you go here, you can be certain to see some old high school buddies and you can’t beat the drink prices. One of the best parts? The Monkey Bar that goes across sniffer’s row. Cover is usually around the $5 mark, but if you show up early enough, you can get in free.4. GENTLEMAN’S CLUBThe Gentleman’s Club has slipped down a bit in the past few years and no longer is the “Gentleman’s” Club it once was. Cover is still up in the $10 range and drinks are comparably priced to other clubs. The talent here is very similar (if not sometimes the same) as the top 3.3. TEASERSTeasers is the first Nudie bar I went to when I first turned 18″. I never rushed out, but as every 18 year old guy does, I needed to ‘see’ what it was all about. It’s more of the atmosphere you’d associate with a strip club, has attractive servers and decently priced drinks. One thing to note is that when the shooter girl comes around, buy a shot and tip her good…2. CLUB FANTASYShower anyone??? The simple fact that Club Fantasy has a shower in the middle which the girls can splash around in and then “slip ‘n slide” across the stage is the reason Club Fantasy pulled #2 on our list. Hot for teacher? A little water will cool you down.1. SIN CITY EXOTIC NIGHTCLUBAnd finally, the number one spot on our list belongs to Sin City. This bar has been many things, but a couple years ago it was bought by some talent and is now the only “Stripper-Run” club in the city. The servers and dancers are all top-notch and this is always an entertaining place to go.

Your story sounds very similar to one I heard from a band I used to sit in with (dead/passed-out people in the hotel, bar above a strip club). They woulda been there in '91 or '92, though (and their station wagon caught fire on the way out of town).

having visited there twice now and maybe going back in september,it does look like those winnipeglovehate.com photos but in midsummer, it's not as empty and desolate as you might imagine and the streets are busier than anywhere in western canada, feeling like people actually use the city and it isn't like a carefully designing pedestrian street anchored by shopping complexes and used in condo development promo shots. without falling into a questionable adbusters thing, it's cool to be in a city where the downtown core isn't yet overrun with the same chainstores as every city ever. the most visible advertising is for companies that no longer exist painted on buildings built for companies that no longer exist. beyond the most visible downtown + exchange district feature of hundred or seventy five year old brick buildings that looks like i dunno, chicago? the rest feels like 1970s 1980s vintage and then a few isolated slices of arena development + alt hotel + beautiful condos.
― dylannn, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 07:00 (ten years ago)
when you wander out of the bubble of the downtown and exchange district, it feels like the city is segregated. if you walk directly north from the exchange district, central park looks like marseille? crumbling tower blocks and cathedrals, the park itself shockingly busy like you never actually see public parks being busy, and predominately african -- it's where 70% of refugees settle in the city and then the majority of arrivals from african countries too. the rest of the city, too, you can tell who lives in the neighborhood and who doesn't live in the neighborhood. even in the quarters of the city known in the city for violence and poverty and you can feel in the right place and the right time how easily shit could get set off, the vibe is homey and even welcoming and there's not the wasteland of empty sidewalks and boarded up windows you find in other western canadian cities.
― dylannn, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 07:07 (ten years ago)
-- low cost of living makes it appealing to students or academics in underfunded fields? and writers and poets? "renowed for churning out poets and novelists" as anthony said. and they like the charming blue collar feel of the city?
it's an artsy vibe there for sure, lots of guys in brown corduroy jackets but this is getting into speculation here, i think they just don't bother to connect with the rest of the country or the world, and live in a tiny middle of manitoba world disconnected from tumblr and feeding their poems and split 7"s into the world of government grants and independent bookstores that 99.5% of the country isn't concerned with. and maybe they don't have the economic pressure to push push push because they're paying three hundred a month for an apartment downtown.

in winnipeg itself, everyone compares their city to montreal.

winnipeg intrigues me. these pictures itt are really interesting to peruse.
but actually living there? super cold winter, flooding each and every spring, hot summer plagued by little black flies - sounds bad.

if you live in the city of winnipeg, you're safe from flooding. but hard to willingly live in a place with seven months of winter.

remember hearing the quite possibly apocryphal and almost certainly derogatory "fact" that winnipeg is the only major city in canada not built on traditional first nations land, because the first nations were smart enough not to decide to live in winnipeg.

seasonally, though? i dunno. i went out on a boat around the forks and on foot of a bridge over the assiniboine (donald st bridge?), you can see the high water marks from various flood, dozens of feet above where the river is sitting right now in the summer of 2015.
