I did see a show on Discovery that said a combination of events on one of the Canary Islands (saturated terrain from rain and an earthquake or volcano) could result in a land mass slippage that would generate such a wave on the US East coast. In fact they theorized it could be as much as 500 m high. But they said it was impossible to predict when or even if it would happen.
