I can't really vote on the UK version, but I'd definitely pick the first one (of the Belgian one). Noone really know how popular (or unpopular- the show/their *characters* were until they came out.

First show *highlights*: masturbation of one of the characters on an almost daily basis.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

2004 in a heartbeat.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

'01

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, 2004 for me too.

Second comes 2002. Some strange journey there.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

2002, then 2004.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'm picking '02 cos it was the perfect midpoint between the gentler human-condition early BBs and the eye-popping total drama overload of the laters ('03 is a weird aberration).

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

i was sort of 'drunk' for most of 2002, maybe it was good.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)

(Also I was on holiday for the bedsit bit of 04)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

The first one, when they didn't actually know if anyone was going to be watching and behaved like normal people in an odd situation rather than being WACKY and FUN and trying to land a deal with Heat. Fuckers.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

rockist

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

I think, on the whole, 2004, for me, but 2002 was good (although, I didn't watch it as much as other years (but more than the first one))

2005 had some really fantastic bits, too

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

The first one was definitely the most enjoyable, just for novelty value.

"Look, she's making a cup of tea! On the telly! I've never seen the likes."

Runner up: 2004.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

2004 because it was the most "episodic": Kitten, bedsit, Jungle Cats vs Harem, Jason vs the world.

Jason was on some Channel 5 reality TV show last year where a group of "celebs" did marine training or something. In one of the weirdest pieces of reality show (UK edition) casting ever, one of the combatants was Ryan Dunn from Jackass.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

2004, for all the reasons upthread. Also Victor = best contestant ever.

2002 was rubbish, I hated almost all the contestants and those bars ruined the show. I have a bit of a soft spot for 2000 as well.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 25 May 2006 10:49 (nineteen years ago)

I loved the first one for the social experimentation fun of it that then turned into DRAMA! And also for the fact that it was just the half hour a day and it wasn't fucking everywhere all the fucking time.

But the second one was best. They genuinely seemed to like each other a lot of the time and be having fun. Also some of them were honestly quite funny.

I found 2004 hard to watch, 2005 impossible, and I haven't seen a minute of it this year. Have they actually put monkeys in there yet?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 25 May 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

Other reasons I liked 2002:

- I was working from home and watching the World Cup too, what a summer.
- Living with 2 other BB obsessives, as opposed to on my own/with my wife who is less of a fan
- Trig Brother was particularly good that year too!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 25 May 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder how dated the first one looks now. As I remember, the house was just a grey prefab shell... no psychedelia or magical colour changing walls..... Anna from BB1 was representative of what BB contestants should be like.

JTS (JTS), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

yeah they should all be ex-clergy next year

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

But the second one was best. They genuinely seemed to like each other a lot of the time and be having fun.

= BAWRIN

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

So who are the winners that have gone on to do not much?

Bez, Mark, Cameron.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

what does Brian do now?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

BB1 had no gay blokes in it at all if I remember correctly. That would be unthinkable now.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

2004, then 2001 - the liking each other reason is really true I think!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

Brian pops in as a 'media correspondant' on Vernon Kaye's radio show.

I know it's not much nowadays, but he did take over from Ant and Dec on SMTV, and didn't make a complete hash of it.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

He presented The Mint - dodgy phone-in-lottery type crap show on ITV.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

last thing i saw Brian doing was 'Brian's Boyfriends' on late-night ITV i.e. Dial-A-Date but just for the gaymensch.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

2002 (oh Jade) then 2003 (oh Jon), mainly because of the fun I had posting about them on here.

I haven't seen any of the more recent ones.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

Matt, has the observation ever been made that one of your friends looks a bit (or even a lot) like Kate Lawler? it's only just occurred to me now, actually.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

I think they had more fun in the old days. Daft things like Johnny running around the broom to get dizzy and Kate falling over putting her trousers on or the papier mache statues or the Lionel Richie Hello busts were all more watchable than a bunch of sulky wannabes bitching.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

Bez, Mark, Cameron.

Mark has joined up with the reformed Take That and sold out arenas up and down the country, i.e. not that much.

Cameron does panto in Aberdeen every year, and writes for the Sunday Post. His brother is still more famous than him up here, if you like watching shite football highlights programmes.

I like them pretty much in descending order with 2000 at the top. The more "characters" they try to put in, the worse it gets.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

2004!

there has to be a balance of people-who-like-each-other and people-who-hate-each-other

worst is 2006 as I am unable to watch the 18-yr-old and his "sexy body"

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 25 May 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

The first one for the reasons stated upthread. Least favourite was undoubtedly last year. I quite liked 2003 as well actually. Jon was total gold.

Cracks (Crackity), Thursday, 25 May 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

Hang on, what was the 'fake/hired housemate scandal' last year? I was out of the country last summer and didn't see a minute of it...

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Thursday, 25 May 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

But the second one was best. They genuinely seemed to like each other a lot of the time and be having fun.

= BAWRIN

Perhaps, but I'd rather watch relatively normal people go slightly mental under the strain of living in bizarre conditions than watch fucking vapid attention whores go apeshit bonkers from minute one just because the camera's on them. The people they have on there now are like vegetables that sing and dance when you open the fridge and the light goes on.

Not that I personally have vegetables that sing and dance when you open the fridge and the light goes on, but I have seen some on telly ads.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 26 May 2006 06:39 (nineteen years ago)

Bez and Mark both went back to their respective past employ. Winning Big Brother did not add, therefore, to their profile. Although, "Happy Mondays featuring Shaun and Bez" seems to be the billing.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 26 May 2006 06:44 (nineteen years ago)

It didn't harm Mark at all, put it that way. His solo career, such as it was, was shit. I doubt it put any ticket sales on the Take That tour, but it reminded everyone what a lovable wee chump he was, probably a good thing with Robbie Williams refusing to take part in any mooted reunion.

People who didn't know who Bez was do now. I don't think Jack Dee benefitted much, being more of a household name beforehand.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:04 (nineteen years ago)

Oh nobody's been harmed by winning it, sure.

Howabout now those that have been harmed by being on it?

top of the list: 2005 Lesleh.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:10 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it's early, I didn't mean "not harmed" literally, I mean it's kind of helped him a bit.

Harmed by being on it - probably ones we never hear about. Did Sunita ruin her budding law career?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:14 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't thingy from the second one lose her teaching job? Penny, that's her.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:17 (nineteen years ago)

According to thebubbleburst.co.uk:

Nichola and Sada had a brief relationaship in 2001. Nichola supported Gabrielle on tour and released a single called "The Game" which flopped. She has since become a porn star.

Sada wrote a book about relationships called "Babes Bible" and returned to India, training to be a yoga instructor.

Carloline suffered from depression after an unsuccessful attempt to launch a career in pop music.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:17 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.nickbateman.com/

Under the news section, he says he's about to take part in the Nuremberg Rally, which sounds rather alarming.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:19 (nineteen years ago)

2001 (BB2) and 2003 (BB4) - the two fairly "boring" ones, for the reasons accentmonkey gave above. I prefer it when it isn't just a stage for shrieking nutter wannnabes to perform on.

David Orton (scarlet), Friday, 26 May 2006 10:04 (nineteen years ago)

2002 is my favourite by far: the most consistently entertaining.

2000 obviously had the benefit of novelty value. and the mighty craig.

2004 wasn't as good as everyone remembers, i think. or was it? looking at it now, i can't remember. i know i loathed and hated emma and marco, and that put me off the whole thing for a bit.

2003 contained gos, my favourite-ever housemate. (why? i dunno. he was fat and called "gos", and that was good enough for me.)

was eugene really only last year? my god.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 26 May 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

i liked 2003. i think it's been too sadistic / too much of a freak show since then (probably as a reaction to the 'boring' nature of 2003).

best CBB? anne diamond and goldie crocheting through the night. they don't seem to do the all-night tasks any more.

koogy wonderland (koogs), Friday, 26 May 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

Goldie on a JCB!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 May 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, the first four seasons seem pretty conservative now. Hard to believe the 2002-ers were considered too "extreme" and "loud" at the time (although it was mostly Jade).

Love Stuart(2001)'s bio from the website:

"Stuart describes himself as a highly confident and articulate person whose passions are fast cars and fois gras."

For some reason I miss the dependable boring types like Dean and Johnny.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 26 May 2006 10:57 (nineteen years ago)

It's all about the law of diminishing returns with Big Brother.

I thought the first series was absolutely fascinating - and the round-table meeting/exposure of "Nasty Nick" was genuinely compelling television. The second series with "Helen&Paul" (counts as one) was good fun.

I started to lose interest with series three - I remember watching a task in which the housemates had to play musical chairs and thought "This is a bit crap really". Can't remember anything about the fourth aside from the gimmick "Christian missionary goes to Africa" trip. The fifth? That was the one with the Portugese transexual - Nadia. Aside from that, total non-recall.

I didn't watch one second of last year's series and don't intend to watch it this year either.

Has there ever been a "where are they now?" documentary on the Big Brother contestants? Aside from Jade Goody, they all seem to dropped right back into obscurity, which is admittedly where they belong.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 27 May 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

Total non-recall of the fifth! "You come in here, acting like some kind of black man". How can that pass through anyone's mind!
