Kung Fu film i.d. request

one of many kung fu films I saw as a kid, probably around 1973-74, was about 2 street kids (orphans?), one a couple years older, who vowed to remain blood brothers and tattoo'd each others' wrists with a symbol. soon after, the younger kid was hungry and stole a piece of fruit(?) from an outdoor stall - was chased by the cops, but the older kid intervened, permitting his escape, whereupon older kid was taken away by the police.

older kid gets raised by a top cop, while younger is raised by the town mobster.

years later they meet again grown-up not recognising each other
and, being on opposite sides of conflict, fight.
while fighting, one of their sleeves gets torn, revealing tattoo -
"where'd you get that?", etc
joyful reunion

end up joining forces to defeat the mob boss (whose adopted kid didn't realise he was such a baddie)

----------------------

expect it's most likely by Shaw Brothers, maybe a Chang Cheh film - have tried googling it, and there is another film with different plot called 'Blood Brothers', but no luck so far...

Man, I haven't seen it, but it sounds pretty great. Your plot synopsis reminds me more of Hung/Yuen/Leung than Chang Cheh/Venoms stuff though.

i'm pretty sure it's the Chinatown Kid, which is from 1977 and is by Chang Cheh... it's also famous for getting together all the Five Venoms stars before The Five Venoms.

I have a Chang Cheh movie called Chinatown Kid, but it doesn't fit that plot at all. Plus, I think it doesn't have all the venoms in it, and anyway came out a year later.

oops, IMDB tells me I have the timeline wrong, Chinatown kid IS before 5DV. But Chinatown Kid lacks Pai Wei (Snake Venom) and I'm sure the plot has no long lost brothers.

Since this will be drawing in the experts, I've got one, too. Also saw it years ago and have never figured out what it was, although I have to think it is quite classic. The basic premise is a group of experts - i want to say seven - and most (if not all) of them practiced a particular animal style. If I recall correctly, five of them were in opposion to the other two, and the film is a progression of pairings-off (one of the five vs. one of the two) with the five being beaten repeatedly. They only manage to win in the end by learning to work together to combine their styles. (I saw this literally 20 years ago, at least, so sorry for the fuzzy detail.)
