playing ilx god

two people on ilx have created self-sustaining worlds which have been subsequently colonized. gareth and daver popshots. it is clear that we are only visitors in their world, they go on whether ot not we're talking about ally's ass or friend tests. occasionally they even send out ambassadors to other threads. yet they remain curiously cautious (if not ignorant) of the rest of ilx. why is this? it's a pretty odd and signifigant aspect of the whole "online community" thing i think, through no work of dave or gareths own.

i mean, has anyone else even noticed that "snake and snake 2" just keeps going and going without us? i wonder if they get pissed off when greenspun is down too and bitch about it via email and AIM?

jess, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmm, y'know I really wouldn't have picked out Dave R. and Gareth as living in their own wiccle worlds.

Nicole, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no you mentalist : ) he means the jay z nas and the snake snake 2 threads I think. started by the two amigos daver and gareth.

It's kinda cool. You see, things like that help to sustain and strengthen community, as we go..."hey have you noticed that thread X is full of posts by people we don't know?"...Lurkers and trolls are 'helpful' building blocks in terms of creating a group feeling.

As to why?...I'm not sure, maybe only one person is providing all the answers, or maybe they are just unaware/uninterested (wtf?) of/in the rest of the board. It's strange. Maybe I shall write my PHd on it! "The others and their role in Online community". Perhaps what we are seeing here is something new, not lurkers, not trolls, but a narrowly defined clique. The same thing happened on ILM, with Jay-Z vs. Nas.

Good question Jess, I shall think about this some more.

I like Erik, he has sage advice.

"waste all of your lives at the dark levels at the end"
"shoot as much as you can at the little items"

wait a minute, i thought that Hanle y and FatNick were the ILx Gods. Does that mean that Dave R and Gareth are going to have a smackdown with the other two?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am not so much a God as a "way".

mike hanle y, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No way!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have had two ILx dreams in the past week which speaks volumes of my lack of social life. (Not really related to this thread, but I have to get this off my chest.) The first had only Ned in it, but actually it wasn't Ned, it was someone playing Ned in a movie because Ned was too famous to play himself. In the second, ILx was transformed into a giant phone conversation so that we could all hear each other talking. At one point some Irish dude started talking and I thought "Oh, that must be Ronan" and then a bunch of people started laughing. The end.

Funny,I had an ILx dream during my afternoon nap,in which a friend of mine was talking to me about a Cars album. In the dream he was illiterate,so he mispronounced the title, but he described the cover to me and I told him he was talking about Candy-O.I said he'd have to ask Dave Q about it,as Dave Q was sitting next to me at a bus stop. When the bus came up the street,Dave Q got in line behind me and grabbed on to me but I don't know if that's because he was blind in the dream,or because he wanted to push me on to the road, which he'd probably want to do after reading this anyway.

Part of me approves of this. Part of me shudders at the idea of someone apparently willing to perform as me for large sums of money.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, apparently according to dream-logic, you were a famous musician or music critic. But also you were like this heavy set middle aged bald guy. Sorry.

bnw, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*growl* Clearly the casting director was on major crack.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Since Ned Raggett = The Ginger Howard Stern obviously in a film about himself he would have to play himself.

Pete, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like how my hair has been variously described as brown, blonde and red over the years. Call it 'mongrel.'

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

call it hair dye?

Maria, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tain't never done that, m'dear. It's all about natural highlights from the sun.
