I can't find a previous thread for this.....

I know the city pretty well, but I don't live there anymore - can anyone recommend a decent (not shithole) place that is farther North or West of Lincoln Park? Andersonville, Ravenswood, Lincoln Sqaure, etc ....
Not as far out as suburbs or airports.. Just not downtown but still in an accessible neighborhood.

Or, maybe, the Viceroy Hotel.

OK, that's probably the wrong Milwaukee Avenue. I blame Google.

"drake hotel, chicago."

"those damn gideons."

gear (gear), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 02:13 (nineteen years ago)

Safe bet: if you are in the city of Chicago, and you are paying less then $80 a night for a room, the roaches will be watching you sleep.

Or, maybe, the Viceroy Hotel.

That's the one overlooking Union Park, right? Alls I can say is: yikes.

sinful caesar sipped his snifter (kenan), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

Just use Hotwire and get a good deal on one downtown.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 04:06 (nineteen years ago)

Kenan, I hoped someone would get that! Oh the stories I have constructed in my brain about that place.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't there a place on Belmont, between Broadway and Clark? Don't know its reputation or anything...

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 05:00 (nineteen years ago)

when I go to Chicago, I will stay at the Burnham

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

So, there isn't anything reputable that isn't downtown/gold coast/lakeview? aright. the Burnham is great.. I'm taking some other people who may not be willing to pay what it takes to get a decent room...

Ever been in (willing to admit) the Covent Hotel on Clark?

anything at all in Andersonville? something w/in stumbling distance of Big Chicks and Neo-Futurists for my likely 5 days this summer. Of course, I can stay in Wrigleyville or Lincoln Park too, but looking for $110 a night or under.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'll charge you less than that. ;-)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

no melodrama, u teaze!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, the only place I know of that's anywhere close to Andersonville is the Heart O' Chicago motel. Looks kinda divey, but I don't know what kind of expectations you have. I think Jordan may have stayed there once when he was in town.

is that still open? i thought i remembered reading on gapersblock or something that it was closing. i could be way mistaken but...

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm, hadn't heard that. But their website is still active.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

I have no idea what it costs but I was semi-surprised to see the Best Western on Broadway in Lakeview... might be worth checking out. (I always kind of thought all similar hotels were right downtown or at the airport.)

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

Heart O' Chicago not square in the middle of Andersonville, mind you -- it's almost exactly a mile north of the Neo-Futurarium.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

But it gets good reviews. I just looked up a place that's a half-mile away from Big Chicks and saw this:

The worst place I have ever stayed, by far. When I checked in, the receptionist was behind bullet-proof glass which had signs taped to it stating that "Prostitutes will be prosecuted." On top of that, the room was a dump. Old, stained carpets, stains on the shower curtain (blood?) and everything was suspiciously sticky (see: prostitutes will be prosecuted.) My friend and I did not want to touch anything in there. We slept on top of the beds with blankets and pillows we had brought ourselves (thank God).

The "phone" wasn't even a real phone, you pick it up and it contacts the front desk who will then dial the number you wish. Is this 1942? Seriously. They were less than thrilled when we kept giving them numbers of other hotels so we could get the hell out of there.
A few cops we had been talking to became very concerned when they found out what area we were staying in. They told us to make sure that we got a cab straight to our door and told us not to come out until it was day. Pay the extra $20 and stay somewhere else. We were lucky we didn't wake up stabbed!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, the Best Western in Boystown is not far from Andersonville. It's nice and not uber-expensive, if I recall correctly. it's tiny, though, so rooms get booked quickly.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

thx all. My only expectations are for sleeping and no bugs. (With H o' C is that far north, I might do something more Addison stoppish, or that Comfort Inn on Diversey.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

omg stay at the Heart O Chicago!!!!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

what'd they do for you, phil?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I have stayed at the Heart o' Chicago a couple of times. Yes, it's a total dive, don't expect any free soap or shampoo or shit like that (you get a bed and THAT IS ALL), but the location is great and they have free parking.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

well i used to pass by the Heart O Chicago every day on the way to high school. it looked like a lot of fun

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

Is it near Clarks on Clark?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

About 10 blocks north of Clark's on Clark.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

its like on that Clark/Peterson/Ashland triangular area. right by carsons ribs and white castle. i think a smashing pumpkin grew up a block away too

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

there's still a White Castle? ooooh shit

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 January 2007 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

That's the last time I had White Castle, when someone woke me up at 4 am in the Heart O' Chicago by shoving a slider in my face.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 25 January 2007 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

buy your own soap might be a dealbreaker.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 January 2007 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not trying to convince you to stay at a divey motel or anything, but I would rather buy soap than pay $50 in parking ramp fees like I did last month (Embassy Suites downtown).

Also check out this place which looks quite nice.

jennpb (jennpb), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, I've never heard of that place, Jenn. I used to live right around the corner from it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

It's right down the street from me and looks much tidier than my own place. I want to be their first squatter.

jennpb (jennpb), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

the heart o chicago made me want to be a prostitute, if only just for one night

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 26 January 2007 04:55 (nineteen years ago)

haha, H o' C looks like a total hot-sheet place in that photo.

oh jordan, I'd never stay downtown.

I just discovered the weekend I MAY visit is Lollapalooza. I might go to the Sunday for Yo La Tengo, but sure-as-hell not 3 days.

Bumping thread. Any new recommendations? Going to be in Chicago later in the summer. Only requirements are that it's near a CTA stop and that it's not infested.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 17 June 2010 08:46 (fifteen years ago)

My parents were looking for a place to stay that was not too far from our apartment (as opposed to the big hotels, which are mostly downtown), and they ultimately had more luck going on the "vacation rentals" section of Craigslist. However, a lot of them are in Wrigleyville, which can be pretty shitty on Cubs game days, so just be aware of that if you do it.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 17 June 2010 12:27 (fifteen years ago)

there's a days inn on belmont, iirc. also my friend had some luck with the city suites right near the belmont stop. heart of chicago is way further north and only marginally near the granville stop (you'd be doing some walking) but it's cheaper, i imagine?

People. I was in a retail clothing store today and heard this horrible, terrible song that was basically a pop country cover of Sweet Home Alabama except the guy was singing about Michigan? There was some line about saying funny things, and smoking funny things and drinking whiskey from the bottle and hanging out on the beach in northern Michigan. What the fuck is this song so I can find the person responsible for it and assassinate him?

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Friday, 30 July 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

DUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHH wrong thread. Sorry, ILX. Also, somebody just informed me via email that this song is by Kid Rock so mystery solved. Thank you. Goodbye. Forever.

I may be in Chicago early next year and need a reasonable hotel downtown. Any tips?
