Barbecues - classic or dud

Barbecues have a lot going for them... sitting out in the sun, convivial company etc., but they have one big problem - they seem to assume that there is nothing nicer in the world to eat than charred meat.

Marxist science suggests that this is not actually the case. Do you concur?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 2 June 2006 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

Hello!

I always think barbecues smell better than they taste, but I do love them.

Burgers, skewers, fish - anything - delicious.

Going camping this weekend, got our stove but also a couple of disposable barbies for that irresistible smell...

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Friday, 2 June 2006 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like them much myself (shhhh don't tell my bf - he loves em).
You always have to wait HOURS for the food and then it's inevitably disappointing when it turns up. Of course I am not allowed to help cook at BBQs as I am a GURL and therefore officially cannot go within 2 foot of the BBQ itself or the whole thing is RUINED and we all have to start again from scratch. Anyway, this country is not designed for eating outside - too many wasps/midgies.

indolent girl (indolent girl), Friday, 2 June 2006 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

NB A gas-powered grill is not a barbecue, it's a cooker you've taken outside.

one of the most purely classic things there is - something about cooking and eating out side.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 2 June 2006 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

which is why it's called a "cookout"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 2 June 2006 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

"they seem to assume that there is nothing nicer in the world to eat than charred meat."

but it doesn't have to be like this. grilled veggies are deeeelish! a shishkabob of mushrooms, peppers, onions, squash, etc equals yum yum yum. (course i do love the whole charred meat thing too, just saying...)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 2 June 2006 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

and there are always veggie burgers. and corn in the husk.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 2 June 2006 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

Veggie burgers tend in my experience to fall apart on the BBQ.

bar·be·cue P Pronunciation Key (bärb-ky)
n.
A grill, pit, or outdoor fireplace for roasting meat.
A whole animal carcass or section thereof roasted or broiled over an open fire or on a spit.
A social gathering, usually held outdoors, at which food is cooked over an open flame.

tr.v. bar·be·cued, bar·be·cu·ing, bar·be·cues
To roast, broil, or grill (meat or seafood) over live coals or an open fire, often basting with a seasoned sauce.

[American Spanish barbacoa, of Taino origin.]

i can kinda understand the real bbq semantic argument - cause that stuff is so much more delicious than grilling. but people have been calling cookouts bbqs and grills bbqs forever - it's an accepted usage. the thing these silly purists forget is the whole point of a bbq is to relax and enjoy. if the food is slow cooked and falling off the bone all the better.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 2 June 2006 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

Charred meat is awesome! Yeah!

the thing the anti-purists forget is that the semantic argument obscures a great cuisine

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

barbeques are great! i like them in the evening/dusk instead of in the middle of the day, though. it's just nice to get together with friends, eat a big sausage, and drink lots of beer.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

DV, skewers of aubergine, mushroom, peppers, courgette are lovely on the barbie. If you're using wooden skewers, soak them first so they don't burst into flame.

Corn on the cob is also teh yum.

Also tomatoes are great, but you need to wrap them in tinfoil so they don't drip onto the flames.

Also, I don't know if you're a Quorn man at all, but I'm very fond of their sossies, and they do make excellent hot dogs. Also if your barbeque has any kind of pan attachment, you can make barbequed onions to go on your hotdogs.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

I wouldn't wanna argue the toss too much about it, I just think propane grills are kinda weird.

Good marinade is key.

for your veggie burgers

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

I am sorry, Scott, for basically duplicating your post without even checking. But it just makes veggie skewers look all the more appealing, no?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:10 (eighteen years ago)

The fancy grills don't produce the same smells and aren't as portable.

Mmm, beachside barbies.

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe this question is actually being asked!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

the thing the anti-purists forget is that the semantic argument obscures a great cuisine

you may have a point - but it's hopeless. you just end up being the annoying guy at the bbq. besides, people who don't know about real bbq are from places where you can't get it anyway. however, if you purists can bring texas bbq to nyc YOU HAVE MY COMPLETE AND TOTAL SUPPORT!

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

And marshmallows to finish off. God I havent had a barbeque in YEARS.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

we were avoiding using that word.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

i like salmon and corn and ramps on the "barbecue"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

but while we're at it - the worst bbq rockism is charcoal over gas. that's just ignorant. you can get great flavor from a gas grill - just add mesquite or hickory wood chips. most people who grill a lot use gas because of the shorter prep time.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

grilled veggies are deeeelish!

indeed - I'm probably going to hit the local Persian place for a pre-barbecue barbecue this evening.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

and zucchini and yellow squash

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

I just dig the chillaxing and drinking involved. foods are ok too.

we grilled homegrown veggie shishkabobs the other night. yum!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 2 June 2006 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

I adore properly charred meat but the bbq I was at last weekend was a t a vegetarian's house and there plenty of good veggies; corn, eggplant, portobellos. zucchini, etc...

I am particularly fond of this sauce.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 2 June 2006 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

the best barbeque is using a smoker, no charred meat here just juicy on the inside and finger lickin good on the outside. You name it you can smoke it - brisket, pork shoulder, salmon, chicken, turkey, tomatoes (make the most amazing tomato sauce!) Loads of different ways of preparing it too, brineing, dry rub, mop sauce, lots of arguements to be had over what's best. I can't wait until we can get it out again this summer! Gas grill's very good for veg too, as other people have pointed out

I'm seriously considering getting a gas grill to go along with my big charcoal grill, but I worry that I'll be seduced by the evil goddess CONVENIENCE and never use the charcoal grill again.

so completely otm

helix aspersa (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 2 June 2006 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

classic, although i should get in the habit of maintaining the distinction between a normal cookout and a proper barbeque.
