my first guitar

I just sold my first guitar and I'm a little mistier than I expected about it. I need the cash and I need to get rid of stuff I'm toting around so it was kind of a no-brainer, but man we had been through a lot together. It was hard to watch it walk out the door.

My dad got it for me when I was 15 or 16, it was a washburn with a les-paul-style body, kind of a cheapie bolt-on neck but it had low action, was easy to play, really nice warm sound. I'm totally giving it the best home possible, the guy who found it on craigslist has six sons (the youngest is my son's age!) and has taught them how to play, he had a guitar like this when he was younger and wants to give it to one of his kids.

So I'm never going to be a rock star, never mind that I was at my best a barely adequate rhythm guitarist. I wasn't even making it out to shows very often, even before I got knocked up. On the other hand, I hadn't played it in years and wouldn't have thought about it if I hadn't decided to get rid of it. So it was kind of nice to get rid of it just because I got to go through those memories.

Objects, y'know? Did you ever get rid of or otherwise lose some object and it still smarts to think of it? Did you ever get rid of everything, or if you kept just a couple things, what were they and why?

I'm sorry you had to sell it; I'd kill to have my first axe back.

I wish I still had all the comic books I ever bought, and not just because I could probably finance a trip around the world with them. I had a bunch of good stuff, incl. almost all 1972-1978 Marvels. I don't feel as strongly about all the vinyl I've dumped over the years, for some reason.

If I look to my left, I see my baseball and bowling trophies, and one of my home run balls from Little League — never been willing to give them up.

Sometime while we lived in Redding I lost a gold chain that I really loved. I've thought often about buying a replacement, but I never found one that I liked as much as the one I lost.

my sympathies. we're having a kid soon and we have a sick cat and as a result I'm selling a lot of things that I thought were important to me (records mainly, but also some books and stuff). luckily my first guitar isn't worth anything. I don't think I'd ever sell it.

I wish I had kept my first truck. A big, blue Ford F150, no working heat or air, power nothing, a 5L V8, 180k miles when I bought it from my grandfather for $750. I was a bitter, angry punk rocking teenager who was surrounded by a sea of shiny new vehicles, and mine wasn't even old enough to be cool in that way. It looked like hell, but it ran pretty good, and I underestimated the cool factor of having something where I could just drive over all the medians in the school parking lot on the way to lunch and not care.

When I moved out of my parents house I left a box of magazines and letters that disappeared at some point and it had the best letter I ever got, from a friend on graduation day. It was a rough time for me and it was amazing to get a note from someone I didn't think I knew that well, who it turns out had thought very highly of me and seen into me. Also, she was hot.

Material possessions seem to come and go with ease, I'll sell anything if I think I can come out ahead on the deal.

i miss my old black half ton chevy truck and about a thousand other things. much of it stolen(by gnarly hippies) or thrown out by parents. timely thread as i've been trying to decide on selling synth/music gear in oder get out of the horrible living condition of the past six months. thing is, as much as i need the money i do not seem able to sell off musical gear. i even tell myself down the line i can repurchase or upgrade. ive always envied others who are able to get rid of everything.
