Why are people afraid that "now" means "forever"?

do they actually just hate "now"?

I ask housemate if he wants to hear CD. He gets all weird, like I've asked him on a date. "No, I'm about to go to sleep." Okay, I stumble down to my room, and he calls out "Aren't you going to put it on the stereo?" WTF? "I'll listen to a song or two." Did he think I was going to get disappointed if he went to bed two songs in? Again, WTF? Something about his attitude reminded me of the trepidation some boyfs/gfs can have towards each other because they interpret each overture as a demand for a lifetime promise. Maybe it is; in that case it's justified. But usually it's just outthinking yourself or the situation to the point where you're not seeing what the other person is actually offering.

So I go back upstairs, put in the CD, and housemate says "see you in the morning" about :30 into the first track. Guh!

I think 'would you like to listen to a CD' has 'would you like to come up to see my etchings' connotations. At least in some people's minds. This is quite a funny story. Do you worry generally that he thinks you're trying to hit on him?

N., Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He may not share your taste in music.

Kodanshi, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes but if you are housemates surely 'do you wanna listen to a CD' has no more etchings implications than if you offered to cook dinner or to share a bottle of wine i.e. in my experience no implications at all?

Emma, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What CD was it?

Cos like if we're talking Barry White then that would be a pretty significant piece of information.

Ronan, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Wanna Fuck You In The Ass" - The Outhere Brothers.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah we've all tried that subtle approach.

Ronan, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always try to get out of it when my room-mate wants me to listen to something, and we get along fine. He just always wants to listen to something that I would like in THEORY but induces snoozes in practice (like some great lost Can album or Lee Perry - never the hits, it's always the ultra-obscurities some money-grubber rescued from the dumpster behind the studio). Even that I wouldn't mind, but it's the way we're supposed to listen - all serious and intent, making intelligent observations. yechhh. He's a jazz guy and he's doing his best to come down to my moronic level, but I still suddenly need to go to bed after 30 seconds of it sometimes. I hope he doesn't think that I think that he wants to shag me!

I didn't know tracer and fritz lived together.

Whenever Pete tries to make me listen to something it is usually Friday night after the pub when I am in no fit state to protest. Having said that if we are playing the Inch of Records each listener has a veto and there is quite a bit of variety.

Other than this I can hear the Radiohead from Other Flatmate through the wall. Or Suede the other night when he was attempting to seduce a young lady.

Emma, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Please tell me it didn't work.

N., Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Buy him a copy of that Outhere Brothers song for gods sake. Suede.....pah!

Ronan, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Wanna Fuck You In The Ass" - The Outhere Brothers.

dan, i have been looking for the name of the artist on this track for two years now (if its the same one). thank you!

jess, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well he wasn't exactly trying to seduce her with Suede seeing as how she was already in his bedroom and giggling therefore was already pretty much seduced. But he was playing them at her nonetheless. I am not sure what happened next as I had to stick my head under several pillows for fear of causing long-term damage to my poor mind.

Emma, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everything I do, I do it for you, Jess.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate the lack of control when other people put on CDs because I *have* to sit there and listen until they think I've had enough, even though I might much rather listen to something else, for fear of being rude. I'm sure other people feel the same way when I play CDs though. I don't understand where now and forever come into it.

Maria, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my housemate mike proceeded to play his 'tricks upon travellers' tape when he came home pissed last night. whilst doing so he ranted about how much he loved the band and the album, but it had fucked him up because he got his missus of two years standing into it and she proceeded to run of with the fiddler. this was in some small way comemorated by the break up of the band immediately afterwards. what made it funny is that he was going on about this whilst also conducting a conversation with my mate ben about static ip addresses. we would be treated to about half a sentance each, not always aimed at the right person, before he trailed off and went off on something else.

regarding now and forever; good question. i can't really get my head to go rational on this subject, and would be apparently doomed to spending life without temporal perspective. eek!

another james, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

WHEN WILL YOU LEARN? NO ONE EVER WANTS TO LISTEN TO MUSIC YOU LIKE. GIVE IT UP. LET PEOPLE FIND MUSIC ON THEIR OWN, ITS THE ONLY WAY !

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I believed now=forever then I would be afraid that I was losing my mind as my grasp on these two very different concepts had been lost.

Pete, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you suggesting the Eiffel 65 are insane?

N., Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For once, Mike is right.

What I don't understand when people are sharing a flat is when they won't put on music at all, period, cos they are afraid the other person doesn't like it. That's silly, listen to what you want. I'm sure if you just split up the time nicely no one will mind. I don't get it.

Ally, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

YEASH! PROPS TO THA MOIKE!

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will make a horrible music sharer in college. "NO i don't want to listen to your shit. It's what I say and THAT'S FINAL!"

Mara, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was disappointed at the equivocation, really, not at anything else. ("I'm going to bed" would not = "put the music on" since his bedroom is impinged by living room stereo noise.) It's like when your girlfriend says "My mom is coming into town. Want to have lunch with us?" and you get lump in throat and make up an excuse not to go, and the next day feel bad about it and tell her that you can go after all (even though you don't really want to, since for some reason you imagine that you're signing your soul away).

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i. We're afraid of dying. ii. Possibly.
