in case you all were wondering - i got canned yesterday, one of 111 people across the country let go in an effort to 'streamline operations' and 'strut down the path to profitability' and bla bla bla. not only that, the office of my company in philadelphia is shutting down!!

i'm so excited.

maura, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

as a present i got a galley of the fuckedcompany.com book! sort of fitting since it's where i first heard about my layoff.

maura, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sorry maura. best head to the temp agency for the interim period

mike hanle y, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

:-( Best of luck indeed. Thought -- do any of the local universities have temp programs set up? They seem to be handy in terms of providing security.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did they use the word strut?????

Yeah temp agency! Enjoy your free time too!

Tom, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I might have more to contribute to this thread later today, one way or another...

But do enjoy the free time Maura, you're smart and talented so I'm sure you won't be out of work for long.

Nicole, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Time for that move you've been thinking about.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

better have a huge ice cream sundae too

mike hanle y, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maura, I wrote you before at maura.com but don't know if you got it. Write me please to dish on this. :)

Samantha, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eleven months pass...
hey i got laid off again! what the fuck is up with january, man

maura (maura), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

:(

Tom (Groke), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm so sorry, Maura! That's awful.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

hope you get another job soon.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i finish today but i'm only temping so it's the nature of the beast. bad luck, maura.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Horrible! *many good thoughts for Maura* J.Lu needs some good cheer as well, folks, she's had to deal with some job hoohah as well!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes. My agency doesn't want to let me go, but one of their biggest clients keeps mucking around with my schedule. I understand that these things happen but it doesn't help when it's time to pay bills. *sends more positive thoughts Maura's way*

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

:-(

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 17 January 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Maura, J.Lu, & others who qualify - oh, sweet lord, believe me when I say I feel your pain & offer you tons & tons of good thoughts & well wishes.

So, is there anyone left on this bitch that's still employed & not in serious danger of losing employment?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 17 January 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry to hear about this, it sucks :(

jel -- (jel), Friday, 17 January 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Bad luck Maura, and j.lu. Best of luck for finding something better.

(I'm afraid that due to ill health I'm sort of hanging on to my job by my fingertips, David.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 January 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm afraid that due to ill health I'm sort of hanging on to my job by my fingertips, David.

*good thoughts for Martin* A friend of mine was laid off for this reason a year ago. As she had been evicted from her apartment a month or so earlier, she still hasn't quite gotten her life back together. I sure hope nothing on this scale happens to you or anyone else here.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 17 January 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, j.lu. This has been a real threat for a good while now, and given how much time I lost over a long period, the immediate threat of sacking won't fade quickly either. I have hung on so far, since the very concrete threat from last February.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 January 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Maura: that really sucks, and I'm sorry. :(

Martin: are you alright?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 17 January 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

martin: I hope you get through this. my thoughts are with you.

(I enjoyed the books you lent me BTW, thanks)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 17 January 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks all: I've managed so far. It's just a little trough at the moment, and I expect I'll get through it.

(Julio: you can bring them along tomorrow if you like. I have taken out a Murakami and put it somewhere to remind me, so a good chance I'll have that with me.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

aw, maura!

let's go drinking, beer is on me

geeta (geeta), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

My sincerest sympathies go out to everyone having job troubles on this thread. I really like you all and your employers are insane not to have you all up in the midst of their workplaces.

Is there an idea that we could do as a global community that could result in some cash for us all and take advantage of our geographic coverage?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

(umm, for "global community" substitute "corporate entity"; I'd rather sound like an MBA dick than a hippie)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

a pop music consulting company!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

So, is there anyone left on this bitch that's still employed & not in serious danger of losing employment?

uh me. most school districts can't snap up teachers quick enough. why don't you sub Maura? Our district pays $75 a day for this and some I've heard of go as high as $100.

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

aww, maura :(

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry to hear that, Maura.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Shame to hear it Maura, hope you get sorted out soon and don't let yourself get too miserable.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

(I'm serious about the "brainstorm for a global corporation idea" thing.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

we can make euphemisms for lonely housewives.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Maura, choose what your former employers must endure:

1) Sliding down a bannister armed with razor blades
2) Forcefed gallons of monkey snot

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Why can't it be one after the other?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Forced gallons of razor blades dipped in monkey snot while sliding down a stucco bannister!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Or they could slide down the bladed bannister into a huge vat of monkey snot, and not be let out until they have swallowed it all.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Make them listen to tortoise!

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Dear god, we're not trying to contravene the Geneva Convention here, Nicole.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

God damnit what is it with you people and Tortoise? I'm willing to accept that you don't like them but you couldn't possibly find them that bad.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 18 January 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

''(Julio: you can bring them along tomorrow if you like. I have taken out a Murakami and put it somewhere to remind me, so a good chance I'll have that with me.)''

OK. thanks martin.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 18 January 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

God damnit what is it with you people and Tortoise? I'm willing to accept that you don't like them but you couldn't possibly find them that bad.

Doubtless if I walked into a room and heard some of their usual swill playing as background music to something I might not heave chunks (as opposed to something virulently inescapable like RATM, no matter what the volume). It's when I'm supposed to accept that said swill meant more to the mid-nineties than TLC's CrazySexyCool that I must protest quite a bit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 January 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Their music is humorless, and whenever I see fans of their music posting they tend to have the same attitude. So it's not exactly that they are the worst bands/fans, but they are easy to have a little fun with. A bit like GYBE! fans.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 18 January 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh heh. Nicole puts it better than I.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 January 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

My advice to all those unhappy with current job (or lacking such) is of course to ENLIST IN THE MARINES

or failing that the ARMY, NAVY, or AIR FORCE

Free clothes, all you can eat and a roof over your head, plus total job security as long as you don't go shagging the same sex or toking the ganj

Tom Millar (Millar), Saturday, 18 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

haha i like nicole's idea best of all!!

thanks everyone -- i've been in philadelphia all weekend, where the beer is cheap and it's dulling the pain a bit. ah, it's probably for the best anyway, as i didn't like my job all that much, and my reason for wanting to move back to new york in the first place was becoming obfuscated by my daily 8 hr struggle to seem 'productive.' finding february rent money is going to be a bitch but i think this'll all work out ... i hope it does. you all are so awesome and nice -- j lu, i hope everything works out for you too.

i do like this pop music think tank whoring out idea as well. i have the sharp black glasses, all i need is a haircut and some highlights to look all consultant-like!!

maura (maura), Monday, 20 January 2003 04:40 (twenty-three years ago)

plus total job security as long as you don't go shagging the same sex or toking the ganj

or as long as you don't get killed.
