This is the thread where we discuss the state of the "stoner comedy" genre

having just watched "Grandma's Boy" and deciding that it was better than Method Man/Redman's "How High" but not nearly as funny as "Harold and Kumar". However, it did have the virtue of Linda Cardellini doing a stupid ass-dance (honestly I never thought she was sexy at all until I saw this movie), and I still think Sandler's sidekicks are in general funnier than he is, even if they can't really sustain an entire movie. Anyway, there was a lot of pot-smoking.

that '70s show is dead. long live that '70s show.

We will never see The Big Lebowski's equal.

what is the first stoner comedy? (Cheech n Chong's first probably...?)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

Reefer Madness, duh/

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

Seems possible that back in pre-Code days there could've been a scene or two with hilarious reefer antics. Never seen it myself, of course, but drunk humor was very big, natch.

Keywords: revenge, knife, granddaughter, demonic-possession, rock-star, eel (Aus, Monday, 5 June 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

How High was disappointing indeed. Harold & Kumar is probably the best stoner movie of recent times, though Dude, Where's My Car comes pretty close, mostly because it's dumber (in a good way) and has a better plot. I'm not sure if Big Lebowski is really stoner movie, it feels more like a pastiche of one, just like every Coen film is.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't laugh once during Harold & Kumar and I was stoned at the time. :/

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

i have so much to say about this but i gotta work :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

I don't understand how it can be a pastiche of a genre that is itself pastiche, but anyway it doesn't matter. It's funnier and stonier than all of these others, as far as I'm concerned, and I've watched it high plenty, and plenty high.

cognitive discodance (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

The 70's Show was great. I never thought of it as a stoner comedy, but I guess that's basically what it was.

For the first season or maybe even two "That 70's Show" was a very decent stonecom. After they switched the emphasis to teen soap, I lost interest. Is it still on?

chaki (chaki), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

in general I liked it, but there were a fair amount of jokes that were delivered wrong and the pacing of the plot didn't make a lot of sense. The villain guy was pretty great - tho they overdid the robot moves/voice thing.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

Harold and Kumar had great dialogue, but some of the scenes didn't build up to much, even though you'd expected them to (the cheetah, the freaky guy living in the woods). Dude, Where's My Car has a better plot, and I've never felt so embarassed laughing at a movie than I did with the last joke (involving the necklaces). But I did laugh, hysterically.

I do like Big Lebowski, and it's probably better than any other film mentioned here, but maybe it's also, you know, too smart for it's own good.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

dazed & confused--the first shot of the car, in slow-mo... the moment when "sweet emotion" kicks in on the soundtrack is the ultimate movie spark-up moment

I disagree with the thesis that stoners are dummies by definition. But then, I would.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

No, I didn't mean stoners are dummies, I just meant that personally I enjoy these kind of comedies more if they're dumber. Though maybe that's just my problem with the Coens: they always seem to be above whatever genre their doing a pastiche of, and therefore their efforts never feel genuine and heartfelt. Though Big Lebowski is probably is the one film of theirs with the biggest heart.

Is Kevin Smith stoner comedy? If so, I hate it.

gear (gear), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

I don't recall any pot smoking in Kevin Smith's movies (except for maybe Clerks...?)

I've never really thought of Big L as a stoner comedy...? It seems to have too many other things going on to qualify. I don't remember dope being a central focus of the movie at all, really.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 5 June 2006 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

Well, as I said this is probably the least true with Lebowski. But have you seen, for example, Hudsucker Proxy? That might've been a great movie, but it's ruined by their postmodern detachment.

Can someone answer me this: How come that actor is always referred to as a 'Hollywood hunk'? He's the weird foreign guy from 'That 70's Show' for fucksake!

Also, not sure if it's a "stoner comedy" or not, but 'Eurotrip' is one of the worst films I've ever seen. I just had to say that.

I'm still curious how The Big L is getting tagget as not a stoner comedy. It is a comedy. The main character is constantly high, and surrounded by crazy wierdos. The movie focuses on his wacky (and barely sensical) misadventures. Much of the laffs come from his bizarre behavior and visions, attributible to his being fried all the damn time and consequent hassles with authority figures. QED.

For some reason I never saw How High before last month and I'm sorry to say this but it was not good! Half Baked is far superior! ( As is Friday, Harold and Kumar and D & C.) Would the Broken Lizard movies fit into this genre? Super Troopers and Club Dread were both fucking funny stoned.

I think the Super Troopers movies are definitely stonecoms. The opening scene in Club Dread has doobage! And boobs!

Does anybody remember the name of that movie with Craig Ferguson where some old lady grew weed to pay for her house and stuff? It's British-ish.

Also, there's that show Weeds, which isn't so much stoner comedy as it is trying-really-hard "dark" comedy that occasionally has a funny joke or three, when it's not being racist.

ARGH Bongwater. That Jack Black song/Wilson trip scene was funny but the rest was gratingly slow. Oh god. And so not funny. The biggest laugh that movie gave me is when it was over, my friend looked at the back of the case and said "only 90 minutes." It felt like 340.

The Stoned Age was funnier than Dazed & Confused, I though. It's also great to watch for the Blue Oyster Cult fans.

Um, I'm sorry. I just watched Bong Water again, sober (OK a little drunk). The first time I saw this movie, we just came down from a really agressive trip and Bong Water just happened to be on cable, and maybe we smoked a little to take the edge off before we discovered the movie, and there was leftover lasagna. So maybe I remember it through a glass...wierdly, but if you cut it down to it's most solid 20 minutes and spliced in 10 minutes of expository footage, Bong Water would be one of the best stoner movies ever.
