nice little rave up in the new yorker.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

also, 2 two-hour movies to follow to finish the story up; not as good as a full season, but better than letting it dangle (i'm assuming they were done shooting season 3 when hbo cancelled it, so we would have had an unfinished series on our hands to drive us nuts)

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

I am really digging Season 2.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

HBO originally offered Milch a 6-episode send-off, which seems to be all the rage over there these days, but he refused. Since each episode is a day, and each season is taken out of a subsequent years, he couldn't figure out how to change the format so radically (I guess that's why, anyway). The show was meant to end with the fourth season, and the (SPOILER) fire (SPOILER), but I guess they're just gonna chug right on four the movies. I'm not so sure about it, really, but I guess we'll wait and see. I like the 12 hour experience, myself, and I think four hours will be anti-climactic.

I've not seen any of this season yet, but Season 2 was a typical "let's fuck with each character in order to make the show more depressing than it has to be" in true HBO style. Still better than all their other shows though.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

so why doesn't hearst think they won't just kill him? did he cut off al's finger(s) do draw bullock et al out and ambush them or is he just too arrogant or what?

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 23 June 2006 04:09 (nineteen years ago)

does he really think after all that that al will bend to his will? who sent the other gunmen? was it all just a ruse by hearst to gain al's trust so he could cut of his finger(s)?

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 23 June 2006 04:11 (nineteen years ago)

is it just the finger(s) that he's after?

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 23 June 2006 04:14 (nineteen years ago)

My daddy didn't liked me.

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Friday, 23 June 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

at the beginning al seemed like a pretty bad guy, then cy shoed up, now the sociopath hearst. i'm voting for a deviation from the historical record - please kill the fucker.

seems tipping off al served not only the purpose of drawing him in but also provided ammunition against bullock.

watching al and hearst practice and lecture on the virtues of restraint was brilliant.

what exactly was so awful about wu's suit? could they just not stand to loose their culturally naive celestial or what?

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 26 June 2006 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

this season is insanely awesome (i liked the first part of this season of sopranos but man does this blow it out of the water). who knew major dad had this in him??? scary as fuck.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 26 June 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

I KNOW. When I first saw him, I was all "Awwwww...not Major Dad." But I've been made to eat my non-verbalized words. Dude is fucking evil. I demand comeuppance!

I get the impression that the Widder Garrett's claim is going to be a really interesting plot point this season. Insofar as Hearst has already forced his hand and pretty much blown any chance of getting that piece of the action through above-board means. How far will he go? Should we worry that Alma isn't a historical figure and is, by that logic, alive solely at the whim of the writers? I imagine that Hearst is assuming that he'd only have to deal with Ellsworth if he offed Alma, but I'm correct in my understanding that Bullock gets the claim in the event of Alma's death, amirite? Because that situation would get uuuuuugly. And it would be awesome.

Just speckalayshun, mind.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 26 June 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

love how major dad is all aw shucks then turns psycho if things don't go his way.

if he does anything to alma i will cry.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 26 June 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

good speculation btw.

Chris L (Chris L), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

Is there any finer sight on TV than Richardson grinning broadly, giving the double thumbs-up, with an antler sticking up out of his pants?

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 01:36 (nineteen years ago)

Richardson is the greatest character in the history of television.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

I do kind of love Richardson a whole lot. I laughed out loud at his thumbs-up moment. And I love the mythic quality he's afforded to the antlers, for seemingly no other reason than the fact that a purdy lady gave them to him.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 03:44 (nineteen years ago)

Milch would be my hero forever if they did one episode just following him around (ala the Xander episode of Buffy) seeing everyone's business from the fringe.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

Also, apropos of nothing whatsoever, I'd kind of suspected that Calamity Jane was maybe rather attractive underneath the grime. Having now seen Robin Weigert gussied up, my suspicions have been confirmed.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 04:08 (nineteen years ago)

How many more blowjobs before they give Ian McShane an Emmy, already?

Chris L (Chris L), Monday, 3 July 2006 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

I'm looking forward to seeing the Ain't character develop past Mah Jongg into a killing machine.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 3 July 2006 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

Heavy.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 10 July 2006 04:06 (nineteen years ago)

Question: why is it that when Swearengen soliloquizes, he's either getting head or talking to one?

Blowjob soliloquies: introspection, fond memories of ladhood...

Chief-in-the-box soliloquies: strategy, the eternal mysteries of this cocksucking vail of tears...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 10 July 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Shouldn't the smell of the decaying chief's head start to waft outside of the wooden box by now?

He let it air out about 7 weeks ago (in the second season). Okay, the salt explanation is better, but surely nobody can complain about a quality Swedgin monologue.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 00:48 (nineteen years ago)

major dad is blowing my mind - wandering around all wide-eyed and humble after the captain was killed, completely vulnerable waiting for someone to direct his rage at.

alma caught in her second loveless marriage reverts to using, freaking everyone out.

dan and the captain mindful of chain of command even when bloody covered in mud fighting for their lives.

hostetler just too sick of it all.

and those theater people, clearly up to no good. what's their angle? one girl's already befriended dude from cy's place.

shit running downhill at the gem - johnny bitches out the barback.

and next week - IT IS SO ON!!!

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

I think maybe Hearst got hisself arrested to duck away from Swearengen and them now that his personal cutthroat got eye-plucked and head-cracked. I don't know why that didn't occur to me until this morning when Al said "It seems the sheriff has eliminated several of our options," but there you has it.

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

good point!

maybe he went to the bella union to get cy's protection, but when bullock came in he had a better idea.

********************SLIGHT HISTORICAL SPOILER***************************************

i was looking at the wikipedia page on hearst and he's older in the photo there with a long white beard. when he showed up in camp he was clean shaven, now he has a beard - some sort of haha wink wink that he started growing his trademark beard on the show.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

so among other things, this is kind of turning into the prequel to citizen kane. i wonder when that occurred to milch, or if he had it in prospect all along.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 14 July 2006 08:30 (nineteen years ago)

The fight between dan and the captain literally had me breathless.
Just kept sayin' "Oh not DAN. Anybody but DAN." That shit was better than the hulk vs the thing.

This season is shaping up to be amongst the best television I've ever seen.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 23 July 2006 02:42 (nineteen years ago)

Every episode has been great in its own unique way this year. I like how it's literally the entire camp vs. Hearst at this point.
Were those the Earp brothers in the previews for next week?

Chris L (Chris L), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

yup. loved the cinnamon drama last night, i dorked out read the historical background on this the other night, i'm like this to doing some dorkwood trip to deadwood - hickok, calamity jane, and bullock are all buried in that cemetary and from what i can tell it's not much bigger (possibly smaller even) than it was back then. there was proposal for a 'buffalo run' a la pamplona's running of the bulls but it got scuttled (probably a good idea). the real bullock was a pretty interesting guy too - he was total bros with teddy roosevelt!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 24 July 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

The reverand from the first season was a real character as well. He was actually killed on the road...the spearfish road, perhaps?...as opposed to dying of a tumor. I liked the bit in the beginning of season 2 where Al made a comment that they found him dead on the road.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Monday, 24 July 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

Hearst's goons riding in town, torches blazing. "Leviathan fucking smiles." Epic sense of dread.

Chris L (Chris L), Monday, 31 July 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

The Calamity / Joanie scenes have been like Christmas coming early for me.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
I don't think I can handle six more days.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

No SHIT! I shouldn't have watched this so late at night. I'll never get to sleep now.

Now, out of all the scheming and tension and foreboding disaster, I just want to bring out a couple of funny parts. What'll probably stick in the mind foremost is the 'rock paper scissor' amongst the whores to see which one is unlucky enough to roust the passed out drunk right there at the end. My favorite, though, is the big grin on Jewel's face as she's hoisted up the stairs by Johnny and Dan.

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

Well, that sucked.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 28 August 2006 01:38 (nineteen years ago)

A dry hump if'n ever I saw one.

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Monday, 28 August 2006 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

I've not seen it yet, but I got the distinct impression it was going to be a bit more low-key after the bad-ass nature of last weeks. I hope it is satisfying, though, despite what has been said. I think there was a distinct 'leaving it until season four' mentality going on during this season, as it had been renewed when they were making it. Unfortunately, they went back on it, so we can all hope that the to two-hour movies are gonna fulfill our needs.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Monday, 28 August 2006 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

Totally unsatisfying, most especially in terms of the big event that goes down in this one.

Were the theater-people being set up for more action in upcoming seasons (before they were cancelled and it became a couple of movies)? I'll always take more Brian Cox, but they added nothing to the proceedings this season.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 28 August 2006 03:03 (nineteen years ago)

wasn't hearst all ready to destroy the town wtf? if you just leave him alone he'll go away after a while?

seems the show hamstrung itself with historic fealty.

BRING ON THE MOTHERFUCKING WIRE

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 28 August 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

The theatre people didn't do much, but I did enjoy them.

I really liked the finale. I don't think it was a case of just leaving George Hearst alone so much as giving into his every demand and doing what you can to get around them if at all possible.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

AND SHOOTING HIM IN THE SHOULDER

AND KILLING THE CUETEST WHORE

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

I only got HBO in time to watch the last 3 episodes. Are they likely to rerun the whole season?

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

Cuetest Gem whore, you mean. Some of the Bella Union girls were hott.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

everyone, absolutely everyone wanted a red huge bloody bloodbath and blood mixing with dust and mud - trixie shoots dude, bullock pulls on his ear later threatening to to it again, al is looking maniacally suicidal w/that knife, sy is all pointing his gun and stabbing junkies, the celestials are furiously passing out guns and rabbling around in the ally, hawkeye brought midgets and fullsized guys, the air is even engaging in active murder lust.

and then what? everyone thinks better of the whole enterprise and votes for living and communal responsibility and the swallowing of one's pride?

WTF IS DEADWOOD TRYING TO TEACH US ABOUT LIFE? I MEAN SRSLY WTF!!!

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

I just hated how that act had ABSOLUTELY NO DRAMATIC TENSION. At all. Like, we've seen Al's caring side for the whores and he's been a relatively decent guy for almost two seasons and then boom all that falls by the wayside with only Johnny complaining and NO ONE ELSE BATS AN EYE?

milo z (mlp), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

no actually sy was heard to comment that they were just fattays dressed up in ruffles

except stupid - stupid is a major hottie

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

Don't forget Lila. Lila was the most beautifulest whore in all of future-Montana.

man, the equivocal ending of S03, so sad. milch's commentary on the final episode is about the best valediction this could get.

jhøshea, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

yeah milch commented on that, maybe a bit defensively. "some people wanted it all tied up with a bow, that's bullshit."

milch dropped some fragments of what was lost: langrishe and the blonde actress have some kind of "blood relation" that langrishe knows but the woman doesn't. and, in history, bullock didn't accept his electoral loss for sherriff and barricaded himself in a building, swearengen had to talk him down before he got killed.

the rest, as the cocksucker says, is silence.
