...which i can't believe,
it's classic bloody mary weather out there, so let's talk about them here! some recipes call for *three* different kinds of salt but i think that's a bit much.

classic recipe:

Ingredients
ice
175ml/6fl oz vodka
pinch celery seeds
splash chilli-infused sherry (dry sherry can be used instead)
good dash of Worcestershire sauce
1 litre/1¾ pints tomato juice
lemons wedges, to serve
Tabasco, to serve
celery sticks, to serve

Method
1. Place all of the ingredients in a large jug and stir well.
2. Run the lemon wedges around the top of your glasses.
3. Pour in the Bloody Mary mixture. Serve with the Tabasco and celery sticks.

(not sure about the sherry!)

Replace the vodka with gin. Go on. Its nicer!!!

(I am spreading the word of the gin bloody mary wherever I go. It is the only right thing to do).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

I once ordered a bloody mary from a Mexican restaurant and got what might as well have been a pint glass full of salsa and tequila, ugh.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

i will have one for lunch.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

OMG I have like 3 cans of this Mexican tomato/clam juice at home, I'm totally having gin clam bloody marys tonight. It's gonna taste like menstruating poon.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

It's bloody mary weather where you are? It SHOULD be bloody mary weather here, but it's Irish coffee weather. Maybe even hot toddy weather. Brr. The Great Northern Monsoon.

My absolute favourite drink. As noted at the ilx picnic in the sky many moons ago, if you drink five, that's your portions of fruit and veg out of the way.

I've stopped ordering Bloody Marys when I go out though because too many places add Tabasco like it's 1999 and you can't drink the fecking thing.

tabasco and plain tomato juice are for wankers!

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Is horseradish a fairly traditional ingredient? My damie used to make them with it, super chunky style, with a giant string bean for a stirry.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

OLD BAY is good too but I think I may have gone too far already. Horseradish is an excellent addition as well!

I always use horseradish. However the most important ingredient is the ground skull of a religious totem. The holier the skull, the better the drink.

I went to the St. Regis Hotel last week, home of what many people say is New York's best bloody mary, but they didn't let me in because I had on the wrong shoes :(

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

The absolute worst is when a place uses Clamato and little to no Tabasco so you're basically drinking shrimp cocktail sauce. GAK.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

I really don't like the lemon wedges in it either. I don't care if that's meant to be a classic thing, it makes it taste kind of wrong, I think.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

11th Comandment of Grandmother: thou shalt not marry a man who cannot fix a perfect bloody Mary. To wit:

If plain tomato juice augmented with fixings was good enough for the Jazz Age, allow it, blud. Too thick or spicy and you might as well call it salsa, really. Clamato is good too but I hate V-8.

Acceptable sprinkly things: cracked pepper, sea salt, Jane's Crazy Mixed-Up Salt, Old Bay.

Liquid adds: Tabasco, Worcestershire, a whisper of dry sherry. Horseradish when Tabasco unavailable.

Vodka: unadulterated Russian rocket fuel, preferably Stolichnaya and never, ever Smirnoff.

Garnish: LIMES. Otherwise not a salad, and then only a thin stalk of celery or cucumber cut lengthways. My ex-bartender dad thinks a jumbo dill pickle makes an excellent garnish - highly controversial.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Bloodies Mary is the correct term.

Ah but you know what the best is, and I think it somehow has a combination of the ideals passed on from Grandmother AND Dad: pickled asparagus. Absolutely great.

if you don't use clamato it will lack that fishy flavour that can only be solved by masturbating into your bloody mary.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

That's good. But the important part is to get the DRINK right and not put a complete side order of vegetables into it as part of the process.

Oh and BTW Tom's suggestions may provoke a morning-after symphony of Peppar fumigation: beware.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

OK, ken, nickalicious, please don't post on this thread again for like an hour, my stomach actually turned from the menstruating poon thing and it still hasn't recovered enough to think about cum bloody mary. Gross, seriously!!

Most bars never get the seasoning right, a lot of places do just give you straight tomato juice, cheap vodka, and a dash of tobasco which is just very sad.

Note: the Old Bay recommendation from Tom does not go into the drink, it is used to rim the glass, margarita style, with spicy. I can't endorse the jalapenos olives though, that's just nuts.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

The Jane's salt suggestion sounds pretty fantastic, I might have to try that sometime. I prefer adding horseradish to Tabasco sauce, to be honest.

I've never had one better than what I've made myself. Of course, I'm sure none of you will agree.

in a tall glass:
Ice
Vodka (I like 42 Below, personally)
Balsamic Vinegar
Spicy V8
celery stick
tobasco
dried chilli flakes on top.

next I'm going to try with a dab of HP sauce.

It might not be the fanciest, one, but Having all these ingerdients at any one time is already incredible to me.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 8 June 2006 02:04 (nineteen years ago)

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 8 June 2006 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

I've had some excellent wasabi bloody marys with the sherry swapped for sake. (NB anyone leaving out the sherry is not making a bloody mary).

I see no love for subbing the vodka for gin (which is the original basisi for the drink, considering the age of this particular cocktail). TRY IT. Especially a nicely botanical one. Vodka is just borin' in comparison.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 8 June 2006 11:52 (nineteen years ago)

I had my first bloody mary a couple of months ago and (much like my experience with juleps) was so sadly disappointed -- mostly by the rafts of horseradish getting stuck in my molars. But okay, if we are ever at a bar and one of you says they make a great one, I'll try again.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Balsamic Vinegar

?????

jeez this thread has wrecked my brain. i'm getting an education here..

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'd say a well aged sherry vinegar rather than balsamic.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

you were disappointed by your experience with juleps?! :(

a well-made mint julep is the best thing ever.

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

i know it's awfully and affectedly hip to say so, but i really prefer mojitos to mint juleps. once i almost poisoned ned ragget w. a julep.

Atreyu!!! (x Jeremy), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

I prefer mojitos to mint juleps too.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

I hate that places don't really serve mint juleps unless it's Derby time.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

Well you could just ask them to make you one. Most bars that serve liquor have all the ingredients.

Well, ok, most bars that would also serve mojitos have all the ingredients.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Geeta. And if I mention it again we're going to attract Stencil to this thread and he's going to make fun of me for ever expecting juleps to be "light" and "summery".

See you tonight for a bloody mary, maybe?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

Not much of a mint julip fan, so i can live with that.

There are lots of different recipes for a good Bloody Mary but the one thing I insist upon, very often to the dismay of the bartender, is having a shaker mary, that is a Bloody Mary chilled and then strained, often in SF into a wine glass. I cannot abide melting ice diluting the tomato juice. Anybody else a fan of Bloody Bulls? How about Ramos Fizz?

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

i used to be conflicted because of my vegatarianism

I'm not sure I get this: tomato juice is a vegetable! Or is this to do with this scary sounding "clamato" stuff? *gets the fear*.

I absolutely love tomato and V8 juice. But the one time I had a bloody mary I hated it (and I love vodka too). I suspect, however, it was made with nothing but tomato juice vodka and worcestershire/salt/pepper. All I could taste was the bitter topnotes of the vodka and the juice, and none of the robust yum of either.

Must try again but this time do it right, with V8 juice and tobasco (or wasabi) and a dash of sherry which sounds like it'd take the harsh bite off the vodka maybe?

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 9 June 2006 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

I think the sherry just helps the non-vodka ingredients to mix that bit better and 'connect' with the vodka.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 9 June 2006 07:12 (nineteen years ago)

f uck. yeah our kid just says that worcestershire sauce is non-veggie.

hmmm. rats. alternatives?

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 9 June 2006 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

Worcestershire Sauce = Anchovies.

I'm usually pretty sparing with my ice for the Mary, for dilution reasons and also cos I don't think it should be Martini cold.

Also, it's hard to pass up a margarita at brunch.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 19 April 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

Totally OTM. It's Bloody CAESARs all the way for us in Canadialand. I'm going to have one right after work today. Yum! Although it is tricky to get the spices right regardless of whether it's a Mary/Caesar. There's only a few places in Toronto that get it right. I prefer the fresh grated horseradish root in mine.

Rob Bolton, Thursday, 19 April 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

Clamato is made for red beer. amirite?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 19 April 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

apparently clamato was invented in 1969 to mix with vodka. the beer thing (redeye?) is perhaps an accidental conconction?

wikipedia also OTM

However, it is not well known in the U.S., and many Canadians living abroad prize a bartender who can mix a good Caesar. It is thus popularly known as the "official cocktail" of Canada.

not sure about this 'official cocktail' business, but holy CRAP we drink a lot of caesars:

The Bloody Caesar is Canada's top cocktail, a Canadian tradition for over 30 years. 250 million Mott's Clamato Caesars are consumed in Canada each year - ten times the Canadian population. That's enough Clamato Caesars to fill a highball glass of 2,088,081 cubic metres in volume.
