Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

The black guy is the last one to die in Texas Chainsaw! But he's also the only black guy in the film.

So then:
6. The Langoliers

Are there any movies where Samuel L. Jackson *doesn't* die in if he's in a supporting role?

lord pooperton (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Patriot Games, but he does get shot in the leg.

The only thing i liked about the sci-fi shitpile that was Event Horizon was that the smart-ass black guy actually lives

kingfish du lac (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

Alien. Apocalypse Now.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

SLJ survives through the end of "Long Kiss Goodnight".

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Am I remembering correctly, or did Event Horizon have absolutely nothing to do with black holes?

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Biko.

They made us watch that in school.

the latest King Kong - the first character with a good amount of screen time to die.

i think.

lemin (lemin), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

The Shining. Although it's a pretty funny gag.

Shadow of the Waxwing (noodle vague), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

Am I remembering correctly, or did Event Horizon have absolutely nothing to do with black holes?

i think it had to do with the ship going thru a black hole to Hell/Oblivion and then coming back, becoming a fangoria wank-off/NIN vid in the process. It also featured Jack Noseworthy and that freaky LA dude wot suspends himself on hooks.

My rather intelligent but hilariously naive engineer friend goaded us into seeing it in the theater that August, then couldn't stop wondering afterwards how the studio could have possibly advertised the flick as "the scariest ever."

the latest King Kong - the first character with a good amount of screen time to die.

i just watched this on a plane and noticed that too. rationalized it by thinking it must have been Jackson's way of paying homage to '80s action movies' habit of haveing black guy killed first.

ALIENS

gear (gear), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

event horizon would have been cooler if the black hole hadn't led to hell but rather to a fucked-up dimension that was nothing but pain and torture and suffering.

also: going to hell apparently teaches you latin?

gear (gear), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

no, they made it a point to show that the captain knew his latin before the ship departed. apparently, the original version had the ship's crew fuckin' themselves to death. Oh yeah, and the director had hired Orbital to do the music. God bless the mid-'90s.

on a related note: oh for fucks sake : Alien vs Predator 2 has been announced

kingfish du lac (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

I don't remember any black guys dying in Return of the Jedi. Boba Fett, and also that girl with octopus tentacle dreadlocks that gets fed to the Sarlac, and the Emperor and Darth Vader, and that one Ewok we're supposed to be sad for.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Not the Sarlac, the, um, thing that lives under Jabba's ass.

Oh, and Jabba the Hut.

Lando orignally didn't make it out of the death star, but they re-shot it

kingfish du lac (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Is that true?

lord pooperton (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Lando Calrissian is the final person Frank Zappa announces is 'not the illigitimate son of Michael Jackson' in the song 'Why Don't You Like Me?' on the 1988 album 'Broadway the Hard Way'.

Lando Calrissian is the only character to get both a Dark Side and a Light Side card in the Star Wars TCG.

On the animated series Drawn Together, the character Foxxy Love has a crush on Lando Calrissian.

The Star Wars comic book series released by Marvel Comics featured Lando as a prominent character following The Empire Strikes Back. He pilots the Millennium Falcon with Chewbacca, helps search for the kidnapped Han Solo, and is even given an archenemy, a crime lord named Drebble. Lando is further established as a con man, swashbuckler, and gambler, and even uses a disguised alter ego who resembles the Japanese cartoon character named Captain Harlock. In this disguise, Lando would go by the alias "Drebble" so that any havoc he caused while using the identity would work its way back to his old enemy and not himself. After Return of the Jedi, Lando gets his own ship, the Cobra .

Jack Black is fairly killed off in The Jackal. Great shot of him looking at the bloody hole where his arm had been, horrified, before being obliterated by a mustachioed Bruce Willis.

Isn't Pulp Fiction a good counter-example: the white protagonist is killed, but the the black one lives?

Long Kiss Goodnight also breaks another Hollywood convention, because in it the black characters gets the white woman.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 10 June 2006 07:05 (nineteen years ago)

Doesn't LL Cool J survive till the end of Deep Blue Sea?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Saturday, 10 June 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

Has Don Cheadle ever been killed 2/3rds of the way through a film by a monster? Preferably by having his head ripped off as he screams?
