Wish I could just not come into work whenever I felt like it, but sadly I don't just ride around on the train for the hell of it. For fuck's sake we live on a tiny little island and yet it is astronomically impractical and expensive to travel only a few miles to a neighbouring town - and now this? These guys are nothing short of criminals with a monopoly and a captive audience. If you want less overcrowding then BUILD MORE TRAINS MORE OFTEN don't fucking make things even more complicated and expensive than they already are!

Nevertheless, based on a quick check on the National Rail Enquiries site, it looks like the cheapest way to travel at the times you want is to buy two single tickets, ensuring that you select FCC for the outward journey. A single to Brighton on FCC at around 18:00 or so is a lot cheaper than Southern (£15.40 vs. £24.10). A single from Brighton to London at around 8:00 am is about the same on either service - £21 (FCC) or £23 (Southern).
