the Hoops board is kind of dead so what does ILX think about the NBA PLAYOFFS!

Game 1 tonight in Assassination City! woo-hoo I'm excited.

(and yes I only really perk up to b-ball during playoff season. I'm one of those.)

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

Go Mavs!

autovac (autovac), Friday, 9 June 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

i want dallas to win just so gary payton doesn't get a ring.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

Sunbelt teams, who cares

(also, no Nash, no cred)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

also, cuban is kinda cute for a billionaire

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha dirk's trying so hard not to crack up in that video!

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 9 June 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

they can't both lose, so i hope the heat get swept and with shaq going a combined 4 for 60 from the line.

dan (dan), Friday, 9 June 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

Go Mavs!

Fuck yeah! I love Dirk but Jason Terry's my new fave. I love his socks and his headband. and his 30+ points.

Sunbelt teams, who cares

We do! Last night, when Jack Ingram was playing, I was actually wondering about the rest of the sports fan community and what they were thinking. Like I could see Detroit fans saying 'fuck this' and cutting it off as soon as Ingrams twangy national anthem started.

ILx's response to my thread yesterday was a concise and definitive answer to my question.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 9 June 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

i like the mavs a lot. nowitzki is a monster, probably the quickest seven-footer i've ever seen. i like stackhouse and terry, too. i wouldn't hate to see the heat win; i like shaq and wade and it would be a nice 'fuck you' to kobe and the lakers.

gear (gear), Friday, 9 June 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

i liked how the mavericks come out to Emminence Front by the Who! (and the benchwarmers come out to Won't Get Fooled Again)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 9 June 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, I'd be cool with either team winning, and obv I love wade, but i sorta feel like shaq & riley already have enough rings. i don't really wanna root for a kraut though (i had a nightmare abt nowitzki last night, do not want :()

gear (gear), Friday, 9 June 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

i'm pissed the pistons choked i wanted them to win just because of flip...that would've really spited mchale who i hate so much right now he's ruined the t-wolves forever. (not that we've ever been that good but it's so bleak it's hard for me to even watch)

i think the heat and dallas are both cool teams that are fun to watch play b-ball.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 9 June 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

who do i least want to see win a ring, mark cuban or 'toine, j. will, and gp?

go Mavs!

Jimmy_tango (Jimmy_tango), Friday, 9 June 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

i think dirk is great, but "quick" wouldn't be in the top 20 words i'd used to describe him. esp on defense. garnett is prob the quickest 7fter.
i don't have too strong of an attachment to either team (still love watching them both play though), but i suppose i'm rooting for the heat, despite payton being a member. shaq is a great person and has really added a lot to his game since his first seasons with orlando. could you imagine young shaq's body with old shaq's vast repetoire of post moves? and wade is ridiculously likeable, ridiculously smooth, a hard-worker on both ends, and a chicago kid.

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 June 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

I mostly just want the Heat to lose because I hate the way Riley offed the Hedgehog.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 9 June 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

that would be the only reason I want the Heat to lose(if hte rumors are true it's fucked up to let Van Gundy go before he even had a chance to build any career momentum) , but I want them to win. Lakers are forever my team but Shaq is still my boy. Dirk seems like an asshole also but I'm fairly indifferent to the Mavs. Just glad Detroit to see Detroit wither. I hate me some 'sheed.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 9 June 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

I like Wade from his last year at Marquette, but I want the Heat to go down bad so Riley will have a losing record in the finals. Riley also deserves to lose because that wack em sack em style play he used with the Knicks caught on and it about made the NBA completely unwatchable for the the past eight to ten years.

The Mavs are fun to watch and if they win it all it is good for the NBA as hopefully more teams will try to get into becoming run and gun transition style basketball.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

Nowitzki is a great outside shooter who can handle the ball like a guard. He is versatile to score from inside or out and is an All-Star level talent at either forward position. He is lean and quick and is a talented, hard-working rebounder.

(garnett is listed at 6'11", which i guess is close to 7')

gear (gear), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

I think David Robinson was quicker, strictly speaking(couldn't shoot jumpers on the move of course)

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

i always forget about robinson! he was indeed pretty quick off the dribble.
i bet dirk is closer to 6'11". but that just means kg is closer to 6'10". i always heard that jordan was measured for the olympics (in '84) at 6'4", yet the bulls had him at 6'6". ben gordon is listed as 6'3" and there's no way in hell is that tall.

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

shaq is actually 5'2"

gear (gear), Friday, 9 June 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 June 2006 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

Hakeem The Dream is the fastest center I can remember seeing play, he made Shaq look sad in the finals against the Magic.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 9 June 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

He's definitely the most skilled center I've seen play, don't know about fastest. Indeed, Shaq got schooled.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 10 June 2006 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

shaq is now 2 for 16 through 2 and will need to step it up quickly to get close to the 4 for 60 i'm hoping for.

viktor khryapa (dwallace), Saturday, 17 June 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, Jason Terry is uncool.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 17 June 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that is some weak, weak shit.

I want the Heat to win. I love me some Shaq, even though some stuff about his departures from both the Magic and the Lakers were explained in Scoop Jackson's column last week that seek pretty weak. His episode of Cribs was BY FAR my favorite all time. Either him or Redman.

And what can you say about Wade? The guy is unstoppable. Can't wait to see what he's like in three or four more years - add some wiley veteran moves to his already ridiculous game.

It would have been cool to see Stan VanG go further with this team, though. He seems like such a good guy.

I predict Heat in 7.

well, all laker fans hate him cuz he decided that the finals against Detroit was the opportune time to start completely sucking. I mean we didn't expect the Gary of old but OH COOL YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN HOW TO DRIBBLE THE BALL! YOU CANNOT KEEP UP WITH NOTED SPEED DEMON CHAUNCEY BILLUPS FOR ONE FUCKING PLAY? REALLY? Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 19 June 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

The game last night was totally bananas. Watching Wade and Dirk trade baskets at the end of regulation made for amazing basketball. I'm pulling for Dallas, but they have their work cut out for them!

Dan Floss (Dan Floss), Monday, 19 June 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

i can't believe wade didn't pass on that final play! circa '88 Jordan-esque.

oops (Oops), Monday, 19 June 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

I watched the last quarter again last night on ESPN Classic. There's no way Dirk fouled him. Bullshit.

And I hate Shaq. Loathsome man.

I'll be sending good vibes for the Mavs up I35 all day.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

the entire mavs organizations, from avery johnson down to dirk and up to mark cubam are such whiney petulant babies. i hope the heat close this out in 6 so these guys have to live with one of the worst finals collapses ever.

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

Name-calling is easy but it's harder to take the time to look at a trail of frustrations, put yourself in the other person's shoes and perhaps acknowledge a problem.

I think the Mavericks have consistently suffered from unfair officiating. The problem might be with Cuban. His enthusiasim and level of involvement might have done his team more harm than good when it comes to the treatment they get from the league. But I don't think you can honestly say that they have deserved every foul and suspension they've been given.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

The officiating sucks, the suspension was lame, but... if Dirk was being Dirk, it wouldn't matter. The Mavericks are playing without their superstar playing at a superstar level. Jason Terry is a bad-ass, and making himself a ton of money in the off-season, but none of these games would have been close with Dirk driving to the basket for fouls.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

David Stern is a PIMP. I just caught his "interview" on PTI, and, in response to questions about Mark Cuban, he said "I'm not talking about it. I'd rather focus on the basketball being played." I just love the fact that he refused to discuss what seemed to be the primary purpose of his being ON the show. I love Mike and Tony, but Stern just put them in their place - almost like "You REPORT what happens. My statements about what happens will not be news. Pay attention to what's on the court."

Oh, and he went to Rutgers. Just like me. Word.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

I do agree with you about Dirk, Milo.

I'm sorry but a $250K is ridiculous.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

Alright, the national anthem singers have sunk us.

WTF? Taylor Hicks would've been better than these dorks.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

The last two Mavs fouls (Harris on Wade, Terry on Wade) were some BULLshit.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

last two?? have you been watching this series milo?

Nonethless they are bringing it so far. Let's hope they can keep it up.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

Another bullshit call. Daniels didn't even touch Wade on that one. Yeesh.

I normally despise blaming the ref (or the worst of all - pointing to foul shot discrepancy, as if one team simply couldn't have gotten fouled more), but this game has been even more absurd than any other in the series.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

:/ maybe I spoke too soon.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

mavs must win now before league goes into a lebron/wade championship lockout for the next 20-25 years.

Second idea, for Jason Terry: try passing.

True.
Lotta sketchy officiating, tho'.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, we won all year by ditching the jump-shooting routine (since, you know, we don't really have any killer shooters except for Dirk), let's try that for the last six minutes of regulation!

Mavs offseason goals should be to acquire a true point guard - I dunno who might be available, surely there's one languishing somewhere. Then you can resign Terry and make him Terry the starting 2 if you want (nb: any contract Terry gets after these playoffs is going to look bad in a few years - I don't think he works at this level going forward). They would have had a fighting chance at the end without him running possessions (and jacking 3s when his shot clearly wasn't on). Devin Harris shows no signs of being a true PG either, make him the 1/2 backup and the sixth/seventh man. Try to move Stack or Daniels for a true shooter. Hide Keith Van Horn's body.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

i think it's pretty lol that Cuban got cornholed by all the stupid rules he himself lobbied the NBA for to create higher scoring games. all those foul calls Wade got when he himself initiated contact were all Cuban's doing. the mavs would have had a better chance if he just shut the fuck up

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

thank Jesus, nothin but baseball for 2 months at least (footie easily ignored).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

I think this is his peak, and the decline won't be big (maybe not one at all), but he's going to get Joe Johnson money after these playoffs, and someone will regret that in a couple of years. Scoring off-guards are a dime a dozen in the NBA.

I hope the Mavericks re-sign him, 'cuz it ain't my money and Cuban can afford to eat a bad contract for short-term gain.

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

can we all agree that the series would've been tenfold more boring if it was detroit vs san antonio? hate on wade if you must, but the guy is a captivating player. and though dallas has a bunch of fairly blah guys, as a whole they're an interesting concept to see realized.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

I wouldn't have been watching if it was the spurs. And if Wade played for Dallas I would be clamoring for sainthood. But he doesn't. So he can eat a bag of dicks.:)

It was an enjoyable series (all of them were) and I hope we get up there again. North Texas is still sorely missing an NBA championship.
