i'm thinking total classic

I knew there was something I liked about you.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

lack of wooden escalators notwithstanding!

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

Yah, I was just going to say: it's not like I'm smoking INSIDE MACY'S.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

What kind of pussy are you, then!?!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

when people do this, i usually try to run up past them, change lanes in front of them and start walking really slowly

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

So was it you I burned with my outstretched cigarette last week! Sorry about that -- would you mind picking up the pace just a tad?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

fucking dud. because they can't walk and light at the same time and always stop in the middle of the stairs, just like the people who have their cell phone conversations right in the middle.

eatadick.com (Carey), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

OTM

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

To be serious I think it is incredibly rude and the type of behavior that allows busybodies to justify any and all smoking bans.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

That actually would be a dud. I have an obsession with staying out of traffic areas and unless I am, like, dropping fragile shit everywhere or just sprained my ankle and absolutely MUST STOP NOW I'm pretty careful about stepping aside. Anyone who's window-shopped with me can tell you about pulling them across the sidewalk to get out of the way = I'm sorry but YES I am everyone's mother.

XP to Carey

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

i dont do it myself

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

but its always good for a laugh to see someone so addicted they can't wait 4 seconds for the top step to light up.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

K-k-klassik!

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

Completely inconsiderate smokers, while funny in some aspects, just make me sad now, because they're basically the reason for ppls like Mark C and Kate posting things about how they want to spit in the faces of even perfectly considerate, staying-mostly-away-from-them smokers in bars, never mind elsewhere.

Though OTOH the more ridiculously strict they get with smoking laws the more torn I am towards being very sad versus inwardly cheering on ppls doing this. I imagine once it is impossible to smoke anywhere but outside I will have a pretty good laugh at ppl doing this in really inconsiderate yet-technically-outside places.

Hmmm.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

in France, forget the stairway, they smoke on the train

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

anything that causes people to stop in the middle of subway stairway traffic is ULTRAMEGADUD.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

Who the hell can't walk and make a phonecall at the same time anyway?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

I always give em a good elbow as I shove past.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

As long as they stop to talk/smoke on the correct side where you are allowed to stop and stand, that's not really a tremendous issue vis a vis traffic. Do many of them really stop on the wrong side to do all this? Because that makes it 10x worse (everyone I see doing this in DC basically parks themselves on the standing side--on ultra long escalators, usually).

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Lighting my next cigarette while still in the revolving door, about to step out of my office building: C/D?

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

That's acceptable in bad weather.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

I think Kant's Categorical Imperative can guide us through these conundra with a fair amount of grace.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

That is not in any way acceptable.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

personally, i won't light up until i'm in a place where my smoke can be released directly into the atmosphere. so if i'm on the stairs out of the division stop i MIGHT light up on the last set of stairs when there's no longer a ceiling above my head. but i'll usually wait until i'm clear of the stairs and on the street.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

people stop coming down the subway stairs because they are about to lose their signal and are douchebags.

eatadick.com (Carey), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

I am assuming that Baaderonixx is still moving through the revolving door on the way out and not making a full 360 or stopping short while doing this. If it's windy and drizzly outside or other conditions exist that would make lighting up nearly impossible then I think using the private segmented enclosure of a revolving door is the least of three evils I can think of - the other two being straight lighting up in the lobby and standing immediately outside the entrance making a fuss in people's way.

In good weather I'd just think he was a silly looking idiot.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

So it wouldn't occur to you, you're saying, to just keep walking from the entrance off to another area to go smoke and light up, out of the way of everyone else? Huh.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

Well yeah but shit weather. another factor not being considered is the traffic patterns of the entrance and if there is appreciable awning/windbreak around or not.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

There is nothing to be considered there. The only way this would be acceptable is if this is a completely dead entrance and no one else is using it at all.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

Though OTOH the more ridiculously strict they get with smoking laws the more torn I am towards being very sad versus inwardly cheering on ppls doing this. I imagine once it is impossible to smoke anywhere but outside I will have a pretty good laugh at ppl doing this in really inconsiderate yet-technically-outside places.

This is where I've got to. If we're socially exluding smokers and pushing them outside I'm all for them sparking up on the way out.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

I still live in some kind of dream world where politeness and consideration will make other people polite and considerate and willing to compromise as well. I've got to get away from that, because it's pretty obviously horseshit.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

Maaaaan, I miss smoking. :-(((((((((((((((((((((((

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

People do this at my work station and you don't even begin to lose signal at all until you're down the NEXT FLIGHT of stairs in front of the turnstiles. ARGH

lord pooperton (ex machina), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

That Kings' Cross fire is insane!

lord pooperton (ex machina), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

Generally dud. I smoke but i try to be considerate of other people, ie while waiting for a bus - heck, i even take wind direction into consideration. And it pisses me off when other smokers don't.

Saying that, who the hell can't walk and light a cigarette at the same time anyway?

scnnr drkly (scnnr drkly), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

haha yesterday when i was walking DOWN the subway escalator from the street to the station this dude in front of me still had his cigarette going -- the ash blew into my face from about ten feet away.

sometimes it takes an earthquake to know where the fault lies (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

time for a smoke.

scnnr drkly (scnnr drkly), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

I run into the down thing all the time--the thing is that in DC they actually have ashtrays at the bottom of the stairs (and none at the top usually!) so I can't figure out if this is ok or not or if those ashtrays are relics of a land long gone.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

strangely enough, i have never seen anyone smoking in an NYC subway station. then again, i rarely get too far out from manhattan (and even there, mostly i stay in midtown). on the other hand, i've seen folks lighting up in PATH stations and in philadelphia subway stations -- in fact, i used to sneak smokes at the city hall station (during the mid 90s) and no-one seemed to give a shit.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 June 2006 06:43 (nineteen years ago)

crazy days

duff (duff), Friday, 9 June 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

fuckin hate it

erinafair (dylan1), Friday, 9 June 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

My least favourite is people who take their last huge drag before they get on the train/into the shop and then expel it in the train/shop. Wankers, all.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 9 June 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

aw fuck howzabout those who hafta have a smoke and do it in the train toilet? smells way worse than piss.

erinafair (dylan1), Friday, 9 June 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)
