Battle of the viral restaurant chains!

In the California Pizza Kitchen thread...

There should be some thread for the battle of the viral restaurant chains. We've had Panera for a number of years since I think they're St. Louis-based and I'm one state north. I'm amused because Quiznos is huge now even though the first set of franchises for the chain failed horribly around town because they put one in the cheapest shopping mall and another nearby near a Wal-Mart.

-- mike h. (m...), Today 10:17 AM.

And thusly a thread is born...

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 8 June 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

A Rainforest Cafe lives within walking distance of me. A horrifying thought. (A Corner Bakery does as well, though, and frankly, I like 'em, though more as a fallback than as a 'wow I can't wait to go!' move.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 June 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

My ongoing favorite chain is Daphne's Greek Cafe. I *believe* they're affiliated with Baja Fresh (only in that I see the two of them together).

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 8 June 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

i was just going to say daphne's! in fact, i'm eating it right now. and you're right about baja fresh and daphne's being affiliates as well.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

why are these viral, i dont get it

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

Because they duplicate exponentially into areas where people live, attacking the existing organisms? Not like a viral internet idea (must.. not.. say.. meme) but like an actual virus that goes around attacking communities.

An ex-coworker of mine actually planned vacations to places where there are Rainforest Cafes. According to him, there's even one in London. When they changed owners, he detailed the differences in menu theme to me.

And, since I just posted this on the original thread:

I have a friend who has parents that never took him to any chain restaurants. As a result, we had to go to ALL of them and I can now classify them by economic status, specialties, and differences in the stupid crap stuck (or not stuck) on the walls.

..so you can see why this thread theme intrigues me.

consumer reports just rated a bunch!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

Cheesecake Factory, Daily Grille, Soup Plantation and do the Hardrock Cafe's count? They're less "family style" than others noted above...um, on second thought maybe they are just as family style?

Olive Garden is king.
I like the breadsticks.
Also, the tangy dressing.

pj (Henry), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

macaroni grill :(

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

There's a suburban area near a new mall that's all chain restaurants -- I think if you go down a block and across the street there's something that's not a chain, but that's the lone island in a sea. To my knowledge, there's a Joe's Crab Shack, P.F. Chang's, Cheesecake Factory, On the Border, and a Buffalo Wild Wings that's opening soon.

Olive Garden can be decent but I really have no idea what the relation is to actual Italian cuisine. Then again, I grew up near a lot of third-generation Italian kids.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

Olive Garden makes me really, really sad.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

One of my kids their hair cut by someone who told us that the Olive Garden was her favorite Italian restaurant. We never went back to get his hair cut there again... I just can't bite my tongue like that very often. (I don't even mind the Olive Garden that much, but favorite Italian restaurant?! That's just wrong.)

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

in atlanta we have this doofus company RAVING BRANDS who are always up to some bullshit like this, they just bought the local breakfast joint flying biscuit & plan to build like a HUNDRED variations on it now :-(

and what (ooo), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

What is Panera Bread? I saw one today near a Taco Cabana I eat lunch at (the Cabana, not nearly viral enough. Edible fast 'Mexican' food, yay).

We have a chain in Louisiana called Semolina that I could see becoming viral. It's all pasta dishes. That's right...there will be noodles in virtually everything you eat there.

Cosi is only ok. Their bread isn't too hot for sandwiches, and they charge a lot. Their salads are pretty good.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone for some great times at T.G.I. Friday's? It's impossible not to have fun in that establishment.

pj (Henry), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

i have been to the moe's in knoxville. it was BAD. they also have this pizza place called "mellow mushroom" that is almost as bad but southern people think it's delicious because they don't understand what pizza is supposed to taste like.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

I used to think the same thing about the bread but it turned out I was going to a Cosi that used too much salt across the board. I went to another store a couple blocks away and marveled at the difference.

Mostly, Cosi trumps Corner Bakery because their tomato-mozzarella sandwich is like 20 times better. Corner Bakery puts it on rock-solid ciabatta (tough to chew) and ruins the simplicity of the sandwich by draping limp roasted red peppers over everything.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

Did that Mellow Mushroom's interior decor look like a jam band had exploded in there? Ours looks like that. And whatever their pizza is yummy.

Yeah, Daphne's is pretty good, you get some actual (relative) variety there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

TOTALLY WRONG!!! it was good compared to the other pizza place in knoxville that people thought was good. it was bland, southern pizza.

xpost YES jam band, also, playing espn on the tvs. i hate restaurants with tvs!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

I went to a Joe's Crab Shack. While I was there the waitstaff danced in the middle of restaurant not once but twice. The food was terrible and their mixed drinks had no prices listed for them so my bar bill was like 50 bucks. Other than that I give it four napkins.

Is there anyone who will confess love for Cracker Barrel?

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

a mall here had a Rainforest Cafe directly opposite a Jekyll & Hyde-themed restaurant in the wing o' shitty food

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

dood whats wrong with having a seinfeld themed menu? also when you walk into mos they say WELCOME TO MO'S!!! really loud and also they have really good marinated tofu there.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

Cracker Barrel makes me ill. Too big, too heavy, too greasy for 7:30 in the morning.

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

We had a BW3s here like 5 years ago that closed when the building they were in was condemned. Since that 1 BW3less year, like 3 have popped up here.

xpost I have had a few of the greatest hungover meals of my life at Cracker Barrel...I love being really stoned at like 10 am and playing checkers out front in rocking chairs.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

maybe they only have marinated tofu in CA because in TN nobody even knows what tofu is and moe's didnt have it so i got a gross art vandalay xpost

JTS (JTS), Thursday, 8 June 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

how does el pollo loco stack up to the other chicken chains?

Koo Koo Roo > El Pollo Loco > Boston Market > KFC

I like Pollo Loco generally, but their "just in time" inventory system suxors. There's one nearby on San Fernando Rd. and Fletcher and after 8pm you run a 50% of there being no chicken.

i think it was a shock to him that people actually wait in line on friday/saturday nights in medium-sized cities to eat in that kind of place.

there's a p.f. chang's about 10 minutes from my parents' house, and on weekends the crowds cause backup into the main road from the parking lot. a bahama breeze just opened nearby, and according to my mother it's fouling up traffic on the closest freeway exit.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 8 June 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

missed my chance to say that cheesecake factory bothers me the most - mostly becaue of all the people who wait three hours for "fine dining" at a place that just serves fatty, salty starch. bthe decor is just a big fucking wasteful excess - o how I hate suburban chain architecture.

I think I posted about this once, but I shalln't bother to check - Amazon Grill .. 13 courses of MEAT! Even carnivores get ill at the thought of meatfest. I don't know if amazon is a national chain yet or if it's still being test marketed - but 13 fucking courses of meat! Good fucking god, 13 bites of meat is more than enough. (shut it.)

DAVE, for #1 Hits of yesterday and today! (dave225.3), Thursday, 8 June 2006 23:53 (nineteen years ago)

that's typical for brazilian/south american bbq joints. they keep bringing around the meat like it's olive garden breadsticks.

*not trying to be pedantic, just wondering*
are there any cheesecake factories in the suburbs? the only ones i know of were in the most downtown or touristy areas of both chicago and baltimore.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 June 2006 23:56 (nineteen years ago)

there's a cheesecake factory in Pasadena, technically a suburb. Pasadena has a pretty good reputation for restaurants but CF is by FAR the popular restaurant in town
ugh there's still a Pioneer chicken on Fairfax, I thought they died ten years ago. I remember a big thoroughly believable rumor going around about them reusing the chicken grease for months on end and it seems like they started folding right after that.
p.f. changs is gooood. their secret is salt!
sharkey's tortilla pizzas are great but most of the stuff is either bland or too salty. can't beat it for organic fast food in these parts though. Claim Jumper is classic for the $5 'international' beer sampler, I don't even remember the food.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 8 June 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

all of that is somehow almost more terrifying to me than any soylent green-type dystopic future food scenario. and what the hell is bahama breeze? and macaroni grill?? I saw one of those recently. is it just some sort of olive garden knock-off? what a horrible, horrible name for a place. i know i should be industrious and google those, but first-hand anecdotes are always edifying/amusing.

not to mention, the whole idea of those bubba gump shrimp co. restaurants still scares me.

Dell (Dell), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

"macaroni grill" is a rather stupid name for a place, yes. It conjures up images of fried elbow macaroni... but (apparently) if you're in the suburbs (or "burbs" I think the kids are saying) you just call it "Macaroni's" , which is less stupid, yet more annoying. (et al BW3's, I can't think of others but there are more .. and maybe that's why so many chain(')s have just given up and named their place(')s with an apostrophe S.... Try the jalepeno poppers at "Fer Fuck's Sake's")

Macaroni Grill rules! They have a "Create-your-own Pasta Bowl™" where they give you a card and a crayon and you check hte boxes of which type of pasta, which type of sauce, and which veggies (up to three) you want mixed in! Also, the tablecloths are made out of paper and the waitress writes her name on it upside down and right-to-left with a crayon!

"create your own toilet bowl"

I used to go record shopping in the suburbs and then grab a drink at a ruby t.g.i. kangaroo katie mcbenngan's or some such. In a weird way it is simultaneously depressing yet mildly exhilarating to drink alone before sunset at the bar at one of those places. I always ended up drinking already-too-cold samuel adams or whatever out of a painful-to-the-touch overchilled frosty mug. I shoulda been wiser and just thrown back scotches or something. Reckon it woulda been more befitting to my playing at being a semi-alcoholic.

Dell (Dell), Friday, 9 June 2006 00:32 (nineteen years ago)

haha visited Bahama Breeze when we went to Orlando last month. Heard the horrible music coming from the bar and went the other way and had appetizers. they had a cop sitting around the front to make sure no one got in their car drunk, which for a second I thought was a friendly southern custom or something but obv. more like a 'let's save a few dumbass tourists from themselves and jailtime' custom. There was also a steakhouse for every 1.2 persons, but I digress. The south is aaaalright.

that sounds pretty funny and I guess scarily does appeal to the, um, "kid in me". (ewww, I know).

I am hoping that banks and other similar staid institutions will soon pick up on the whole theme/novelty thing, and I'll be able to fill out loan applications with a big oversized crayon. And Bon Jovi will be blasting over the speakers.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 9 June 2006 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

hee

some highlights:

Big bucks are at stake in the battle between what one lawyer termed the "breastaurants" niche. Hooters, with 386 stores worldwide, had revenues of more than $750-million last year. WingHouse, with 14, had sales of more than $26-million.

...Describing Hooters' decor as a unique combination of elements that the chain's founders "bled and sweat for,"...

...The elements of Hooters' atmosphere that help evoke the chain's distinctive "sensory overload," Hill said, include parchment paper menus reciting the "Hooters Saga" and road signs on the wall with such sayings as "Double Curves" and "Caution: Blondes Thinking." (Hill's mention of this sign did not spark a reaction from the lone blond on the jury.)...

...The exhibits bolstering Hooters' case will include copies of the Hooters University training manual (also known as the Hooters Bible) and a copy of WingHouse's training manual, as well as woodweave plates and table-top paper towel holders from both chains. Hooters' legal team also came to court Wednesday with a surfboard on a dolly, to be entered as an exhibit.

WingHouse, meanwhile, said it will introduce photos of other chains that could be considered similar to Hooters but which are not named in the lawsuit. Among them are Mugs and Jugs, Crabby Bill's and Beef O'Brady's...

Dell (Dell), Friday, 9 June 2006 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

i'm reading the hooters wikipedia article. from the thing that hooters girls have to sign:

I do not find my job duties, uniform requirements, or work environment to be offensive, intimidating, hostile, or unwelcome.

i like how you have to sign a contract that makes you not think certain things! also i like the weird suntan pantyhose.

-- firstworldman (3...), June 8th, 2006.

I thought that Baja Fresh was owned by Wendy's. I happen to think it's the best fast food around, in fact it's almost the only chain food I genuinely look forward to eating. If Wendy's owns Daphne's too, and it's as good as you guys say, the company is doing something right.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 9 June 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

According to Wendy's site, Baja Fresh is in fact a subsidiary, as are Tim Horton's and two places I've never heard of (Cafe Express and Pasta Pomodoro). Daphne's is not listed. Maybe they have some kind of a deal? In some areas there's always a Starbucks next to an Einstein's but I don't think they're the same company.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 9 June 2006 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

PORTILLO'S, Y'ALL

Haha, I was going to say Portillo's. Have they spread out of the great lakes area? I know there are a bunch in Chicagoland, but I don't live there so I have no idea how far they've spread. I'd almost be happy if they came to California at some point. At least I could get a passable Italian beef when I got that one-a-year craving.

Even a former vice president cannot get a table at the Cheesecake Factory. Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, tried to nab a bite at the Cheesecake Factory at a Nashville mall recently. After the hostess told the Gores it would be a 25- or 30-minute wait, they left, a witness told E! Online's Ted Casablanca.

Seriously. I was forced to go to a Cheesecake Factory for a birthday dinner - dude is from the sticks in Utah, so CF is fine dining in his mind.

My meal SUCKED. but the cheesecake, admittedly, was pretty damn tasty. And the coffee weren't so bad either.
