Thanks but I was after something specific to names - I'm sure there's a term for them but I can't find it anywhere in the brain or Google.

It sounds unlikely to me but... possible

Or perhaps that's the term for giving every child in your family a name that starts with the same letter.

No, the term for that is "twattish"

Thanks again for the suggestions. I'm going to sound pendantic here but does anyone actually know?

I suspect there is no term for allitarative names.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/-onym

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliteration

or, if there is a name for it, it's probably Khmer.

Well Tobias Smollett wrote Peregrine Pickle, Roderick Random and Ferdinand Fathom, but maybe 18th century names were just stoopid.

i'm one of these. i fucking hate it. especially because my last name is a pretty common first name too, if you see what i mean, so everybody gets confused when they first meet me. luckily, most quickly learn to get round it by calling me "that little git over there with the sideburns" or similar.

i also particularly hate the fact that my first and second names have two syllables each.

anyway: if there is an actual word to describe this curse, i've never heard of it. "unluckiness" is the best i can come up with right now.

Sons Of The Redd Desert (Ken L), Sunday, 11 June 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a term to describe where the first names ends with the same letter that the surname begins with?

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 11 June 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

Ailsa, it's funny you should ask that about the double "U"'s because the entire time I've ben reading this thread all I could think about is this guy whom I went to grade school whose name was (seriously) _Unsteinn Unsteinnson_. Not famous, yet awesome in literally every regard.

Sure, but even worse is naming your kids in alphabetical order. Ask my younger brother Ben. (Thankfully my parents stopped there, and there is no kid sister Charlotte etc.)

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Monday, 12 June 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

in university days we used to almost study these during heated battles of the "famous names" drinking game, because names like these are when you have the "cleopetra comin' at ya'" duels as when you say a name like this, you'd first say "cleopetra, comin' at ya'!" and then the name and the direction of the game reverses, the next person can change the direction back to you with another name. M is a particularly good letter for these oddly

my last name starts with an a. in high school some of my friends called me a-squared. i hated it at first, but grew to love it with time.

andy dale (andy dale), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

i like this story, even though dale actually starts with a d, because it is about transcending hatred, and i have a touch of the oprahs so it appealed to my yearning for goodness.

estela (estela), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 04:57 (nineteen years ago)

haha, yeah.
dale is my middle name, though. i just like going by my first and middle name together sometimes. my last name actually does start with an a. i just don't feel like sharing it with everyone because i don't like it.
