http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=tree&goto=1495636&rid=0Hamilton made the first electric wristwatches and some of the coolest deco and space-age watches ever. A few years back their name was reborn, though the watches are manufactured by Swatch, so they're swiss and not american. But for a cheap watch (meaning a few hundred dollars, i.e., one that doesn't require winding or uses a fancy self-winding automatic thing), they are quite beautiful, and even with the new designs, many of them reference original Hamilton designs from the 40s through the 60s. And instead of having the name of some lame jewelery or clothes designer, it says...Hamilton. The above Jazzmaster is something I'd like.
but hit their site or google them, they're quite popular. Also note, they made, and still make, the watch worn by Men In Black, which may be a bit too kitchy.

This however, is classy, and sharp, I have an earlier version of this without the date, but with a rose face:

I see that one IS an automatic mechanical watch (no battery, winds from wrist movement) so it's a bit more money.
I have to say, I have 2 watches that work like that, and they are a pain because if you go one day without wearing them, you have to set them again. That's why they sell those fancy gizmos that you put the watch on and they spin around all night. One day I'll get one of those.

How nice are we talking, in terms of money they intend to spend? My TAG Heuer has served me excellently over the years.

check out some of the Rolex Cellini collection - not as big and metal as the traditional Rolex sport watches.

a few of the Rolex Oyster Perpetuals are simple and classy. Just avoid the diving bezel and all other not needed stuff. I have one, it was my grandfathers, and it's quite simple. It even has a leather band.
