Real Salt Lake
I'm sure there's a team in either Indonesia or Thailand called "Robin Hood", but Google doesn't confirm.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 17 June 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

Googling does bring up this team from the Thai Pro League, though:

Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit Bravo Association Football Club

I tried googling for some funnies and found a bunch of crap folk on some newsgroup roffling about how funny Inverness Caledonian Thistle is. Also someone who seemed to think that Cork City was a funny name. People are odd.

Shadow of the Waxwing (noodle vague), Saturday, 17 June 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

glaringly obvious, yet still baffling ones are sheffield wednesday and schalke 04.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 17 June 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

If I wasn't British, and hadn't grown up surrounded by these names, I reckon I'd find them pretty odd:

Crystal Palace
Queen's Park Rangers
Aston Villa
Sheffield Wednesday
Crewe Alexandra
Port Vale
Arsenal
Queen of the South
Heart of Midlothian
Hamilton Academicals

Teh HoBBercraft (the pirate king), Saturday, 17 June 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

Deportivo Wanka - perennial Peruvian title challengers

Eleven Men In Flight - Zimbabwe or Swaziland, not sure.

darren (darren), Sunday, 18 June 2006 10:04 (nineteen years ago)

Also, the J-League (and its lower divisions) is a great one for names that sound a bit daft to football-friendly ears:

Kyoto Purple Sanga
JEF United (my team !)
The Spa Kusatsu
Mito Hollyhock
New Wave Kitakyushu
Barefoot Hokkaido
Blackpecker Hakodate
FC Billboard Niigata
Technonet Osaka

darren (darren), Sunday, 18 June 2006 10:10 (nineteen years ago)

zappi (joni), Sunday, 18 June 2006 10:38 (nineteen years ago)

barcelona (ecuador)
arsenal (honduras)
liverpool (uruguay)
stenhousemuir (chile)

(ok i made that last one up)

zappi (joni), Sunday, 18 June 2006 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

Hamilton Academicals

THERES NO FUCKING "S" AT THE END!!!!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 18 June 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

It's the silent and invisible final 's' which makes it so odd

Teh HoBBercraft (the pirate king), Sunday, 18 June 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Then since there is no "s" then it cant be odd.
We are named Hamilton Academical because the club was started by former pupils of Hamilton Academy in the early 1870s. We are one of the worlds oldest clubs.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 18 June 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

Well, if you're going to be like that about it, none of these team names on this thread are at all weird because they all have reasons behind them.

Lock thread, etc.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 18 June 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

Schalke is the district of Gelsenkirchen where the club was formed, back in 1904...

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 18 June 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Airbus UK

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 18 June 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

Hearts Of Oak

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 18 June 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

Sheffield Wednesday used to play on a Wednesday afternoon because that was the traditional half-day closing for local businesses.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 18 June 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

and they play in Sheffield

Teh HoBBercraft (the pirate king), Sunday, 18 June 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

Crewe Alexandra named after Princess Alexandra or possibly a pub with her name, apparently.

Shadow of the Waxwing (noodle vague), Sunday, 18 June 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

Also turns out all these teams were cricket clubs, originally.

Shadow of the Waxwing (noodle vague), Sunday, 18 June 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Aston Villa are from the Aston area of Birmingham and were formed by the members of the Villa Cross Cricket Club. (xpost)

(I did not know that, thanks Google and Wikipedia!)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 18 June 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

I keep thinking of that Fast Show skit with clubs like Sporting Club Bang! and Bicycle Dynamo.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 June 2006 04:51 (nineteen years ago)

Surely the best thing about Young Boys of Berne is that they play in the Wankdorf Stadium (which will host some games at Euro 2008, fact fans).

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 19 June 2006 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

Young Boys Wankdorf Erection Relief - still the best headline evah.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 19 June 2006 06:39 (nineteen years ago)

Wankdorf — what Prince Charles did as a lonely teenager.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 19 June 2006 06:55 (nineteen years ago)

Bad memories and all that but Neuchâtel Xamax is a fantastic club name. Sounds like a dodgy 80s goth band.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 19 June 2006 08:05 (nineteen years ago)

Leyton Orient

The well-known 3rd-division London club was founded in 1881 by members of a cricket club in Hackney so that they could continue playing together in the winter months. In 1888 they adopted the name 'Orient' on the suggestion of a player who worked for the Orient Shipping Line

Bizarre.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 19 June 2006 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

Artmedia 'Diploma' Bratislava

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 19 June 2006 08:47 (nineteen years ago)

Me mentioning Neuchâtel Xamax wasn't a cue to start listing European diddy teams who've put 5 past Celtic!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 19 June 2006 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

There aren't that many are there?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 19 June 2006 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

Not ones with weird names at least.

Neuchâtel Xamax, now available without perscription!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 19 June 2006 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

Videoton (Hungary)

sounds a bit like an Eastern European model of beta-max

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Monday, 19 June 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

Viking FK Stavanger. It's like Rangers changing their name to Glasgow Picts.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 19 June 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

Never gonna happen. That would mean Rangers fans would have to be claim to be scottish instead of british!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 19 June 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

my fave club name ever ever is perhaps the least weird possible: ladies & gents i present to you peru's SPORT BOYS

Shadow of the Waxwing (noodle vague), Monday, 19 June 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

They're impaled in a sporty tribute to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers infamous "socks" period.

four years pass...

Peru - Club Social Cultural Deportivo Universidad César Vallejo - los poetas.

Football team named after one of my favourite poets, brilliant.

Also in Peru: Sport Boys Association. They play in pink.
continuing the boys theme:
Argentina - Newell's Old Boys - los leprosos (the lepers). Named after the director of their school who was their coach. Just love the name. The nickname i just became aware of via wikipedia "The team is often referred to as leprosos (lepers) because they played in a charity match to raise funds for a leprosy clinic back in the 1920s.[1]" Brilliant.

Also in Argentina - All Boys. Apparently called that because of the youth of the founding members at the time of the club's establishment.

Vélez Sársfield - el fortín. Named after the neighbourhood they come from, which is in turn named after the man who wrote the Civil Code of Argentina. I just love the name, find it very euphonious and fun to say. if there's not a band that has used the name i intend to one day form a band just to use it.

Chile - Universidad de Chile (boring name) - el romantico viajero (the romantic traveler) not so boring nickname. Comes from a line in the club's song. Other nicknames are el león (the lion), el bulla (the owl), la U.

Trinidad and Tobago - Joe Public Football Club.

Spain - Atlético Madrid - los colchoneros (the mattress-makers) so named because old fashioned mattresses were white and red vertical stripes.

was going to post a new thread but saw this one and realised it would be superfluous. obviously a bunch of the names are already mentioned :(

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

Atletico used to be Atletico Aviacion, which is also weird (xps and not). Not weird, just sad, is that they're moving ground in 2012 and appear to be making the ultimate mistake in doing so:
