Cane toad skins act as a powerful hallucinogenic if you lick them.

Cane Toads were introduced to Australia to eat French's Cane Beetle and the Greyback Cane Beetle. At that time, some naturalists and scientists warned of the dangers of liberating Cane Toads in Australia. The protesters included a former New South Wales Government Entomologist, W W Froggatt.

Northern Territories. Well done, BBC, fact-checking alive and well in Englands.

It's dangerous to blat them with a club. Venom can splatter. But I wouldn't put one in my freezer. It'd stink.

The state government has written to its federal counterpart in Canberra, asking for permission to use troops as a first line of defence.

I am trying to picture how this is going to work, exactly. "Halt or I'll shoot" isn't really going to stop some frogs.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 18 June 2006 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

we should've sent a fleet of these into iraq!

indie disco dancer, sweet romancer (haitch), Sunday, 18 June 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

Have you seen that terrible Jimeoin movie The Craic? They were golf-whacking cane toads all over the shop in that. Ugh. Hideous beasties.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 18 June 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

I'd sooner eradicate Jimeoin than cane toads.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 19 June 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

Heh.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 June 2006 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

OMG OMG those comments at the end of the article!!

Why can't anyone ever think of peace, love, unity, and respect, man?

Just be firm but be cool. Go up to the toads and say "Hey! Toads!... there's a lot of you guys... and you should, you know, like, just chill out, man... here are some dead insects *throws them far far away back to Darwin*... now, like, go back and make your home a great place for awesome toads like you."

PERTH WAS NEVER THE SAME AFTER THE CANE TOAD APOCALPYSE

aDOring NUTbians (donut), Monday, 19 June 2006 06:48 (nineteen years ago)

I would like a cane toad suit. Better than that, I would lick a cane toad suit.

registered ratty (registered ratty), Monday, 19 June 2006 06:53 (nineteen years ago)

They're cute when they're little.

Hotman Paris Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:18 (nineteen years ago)

it's all fun and games until lots of our native species get extinguished

gem (trisk), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yer.

Daft bugger who imported cane toads to kill cane beetles that live up the top of cane stalks and so can't physically be reached by the cane toads because they can't jump six feet in the air FTL.

Hotman Paris Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:28 (nineteen years ago)

So, are you saying I WASN'T supposed to grab that toad from the Koala Park sanctuary and let it free?

aDOring NUTbians (donut), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:29 (nineteen years ago)

You WHAT

registered ratty (registered ratty), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

And I'd do it again.

aDOring NUTbians (donut), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:36 (nineteen years ago)

I was passed by the first time by that West Pennant Hills bus driver, so I figured a practical joke involving a cane toad would be appropriate to teach W. Pennant Hills public transit a good lesson. And then, the next thing you know, well, the little fucker amphibian was nowhere to be found... she looked like she was going to give birth to a toad army, too... poor thing.

aDOring NUTbians (donut), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:38 (nineteen years ago)

On her way to Sydney no doubt. Well that's GREAT.

registered ratty (registered ratty), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:43 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, like you didn't want to get rid of those obnoxious gulls, magpies, and ibises anyway. pfft. :p

aDOring NUTbians (donut), Monday, 19 June 2006 07:46 (nineteen years ago)

Ibises - they truly are the spawn of hell. Straight out of Bosch.

registered ratty (registered ratty), Monday, 19 June 2006 08:22 (nineteen years ago)

OMG, fuck ibises!!!!! I was TRAUMATIZED by an ibis stealing my lunch on a primary school excursion!

indie disco dancer, sweet romancer (haitch), Monday, 19 June 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

Let's have a thread about Ibises. We used to call them Clawpokes.

registered ratty (registered ratty), Monday, 19 June 2006 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

So which came first, the toad epidemic or the Simpsons episode about a toad epidemic?

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Monday, 19 June 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

Bullfrogs are pretty bad, too. I dug a fishpond in our yard and put tadpoles in it. Some developed into green frogs, some into bullfrogs. The bullfrogs then ate all the green frogs. And they didn't stop there. They ate all the goldfish, too. And every spring hundreds of bullfrog tadpoles hatch out but never grow to adulthood because the adults EAT ALL THEIR BABIES. Maybe it's for the best.

I love the conceit of wildlife management.
