What think ye of Haughey?

Charles Haughey was a prominent Irish politician. He left public life in the early 1990s, and died last week.

I'm curious, what impressions (if any) do non-Irish ILXoRs have of him?

There was a quote from someone in an obit saying he only took from the rich, never the poor.

Which is canny, really, since the rich are the ones with all the stuff.

Is it true he liked a good drink?

I'm not sure what to think of him. In a way he was the closest thing we had to Margaret Thatcher, without the Dail majorities to do as much harm as she did. Although, he did introduce some good things like inheritance rights for women when he was Minister for Finance and he wasn't the worst statesman. He was quite thin lipped and beaky though. And he shagged Terry Keane.

the gun-running crisis is usually looked at as a "scandal" that set him back a bit but it's glossed over that it took place against the backdrop of internment - if Lynch hadn't won out the side that backed Haughey would have been ready to use the Irish army to invade Northern Ireland

breaking character coz i'm glad that cunt is dead (weldrick), Sunday, 18 June 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

The hipocrisy of the man and his cronies disgusts me. The revisionism that took place last week and probably this week as well (today's IT again!) is v unsettling. The man was a crook, a leech and totally uninterested in the plight of the ordinary Irish person and what is amazing is how long he lasted being so obviously uncaring about us all!

Loving the Terry Keane exclusive in the Daily Mail today. Bless her, she did take that break up awfully personal like. Totally understandable after 27 years with someone so "thin lipped and beaky" :)

(Bloody email verification. Creeps me out no end!)

(today's IT again!)

I don't think Waters is being revisionist. He's always come out with that kind of shite.

"They never gave him a chance!"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 June 2006 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

I know. People tell me he used to be good once upon a time. Still though: Grrrr Haughey grrrr the swine grrrr FF grrrr (I'm done now)

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 19 June 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

I think "Haughey-haughey-ha" !

JTS (JTS), Monday, 19 June 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

Or as scrap saturday would have it:

"I hear they've bred a new donkey charlie! Instead of saying he-haw it says haw-hee."
"You're a riot, you really are *SOTTO-VOCE TO MARA: have her killed*" Or somesuch threat...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 19 June 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

Now Scrap Saturday was funny. Wasn't it worth having Haughey just to get those laughs...

Lara (Lara), Monday, 19 June 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

No.

two years pass...

I'm reading about him, again. I'm getting the impression that he was a terrible man.

the pinefox, Friday, 16 January 2009 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

He owed so much money to Allied Irish Banks! And the bank manager would come to the ministry and be fobbed off with promises that Haughey was about to make cash from land deals. Then when he took power the bank sent him a fawning congratulatory letter.

The book also mentions Scrap Saturday of which I had never before heard.

A Terrible Man!

velko, Friday, 16 January 2009 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

He owned an island! HE OWNED AN ISLAND. I mean for fuck's sake, on whatever five figure sum the Taoiseach was paid in the 90sn Haughey had stables and endless land, an utterly huge estate, a helicopter, and an island, fucking ludicrous! I think we discussed this on ILE earlier. The man was as more responsible for disintegrating faith in politics and politicians in Ireland than anyone who came after him and that says a lot.

A terrible man for the bribes.

Local Garda, Friday, 16 January 2009 02:56 (seventeen years ago)

I agree - I blame Lara, though, for lending him all the money. A terrible woman for the banks.
