Dan Rather's coup de grace

Well, he's officially been booted from CBS. It's remarkable how quickly he went from legendary journalist to hack in many people's eyes. Kind of sad.

Word is that he's going to Mark Cuban's HDNEt.

The guy's 74 (although he sure doesn't look it). Maybe he should just hang it up.

I think he pretty willingly contributed to his descent into hack-dom. He did a bunch of those seriously bad "murder mystery of the week" type specials. He was really funny during the '00 election though, breaking out all those non-sequiter colloquialisms ("and if a frog had pockets he'd carry a pistol", "this election's hotter than a Times Square Rolex", etc.)

Poor Dan

Didn't the Rather thing happen more or less the same time that CBS folded on the Reagan miniseries? For awhile there (still?) it looked like CBS was willing to kowtow to the slightest wingnut pressure.

This article is somewhat tragically amusing.

I never forgave him for posing eagerly with Fidel, the happy pair holding baseball bats, in 1994 at a conference in NYC.

It could at least be funny if they got Harry Shearer...

well I never understood the fuss about The Insider.

Rather seems like a classic case of too much success too early, so that he didn't need to grow into his public stature. The movie definitely needs to linger on that "what's the frequency, Kenneth?" incident.

it's just going to be on Rathergate/BushNationalGuardgate

I dunno, Rather was 32 when he became White House correspondent... didn't get the nightly anchor til he was 49, tho he was already a star.
