ADMIN: DG's Big Decision

I've just deleted the 'Breaking Up' thread due to it being totally unproductive and a bad idea in general for those concerned (and cos I was asked by them wot started it), but THAT'S IT - I'm not deleting anything else unless it crashes people's browsers, basically. Deletion even for the noblest of reasons always seems to piss someone off, so I won't do it anymore. Everyone here is smart enough to know the consequences of their actions so I urge people to think before they hit 'submit', cos once it's on here it stays on here, unless it's literally a matter of life or death, though quite how that would come about I dunno. If you have a problem with something someone's said, have it out with them on the board or via email. If you regret posting something damn stupid you'll have to explain yourself to those who take offence.
This isn't and never has been my board, it's the joint property of those who post here - it's all yours to do with as you please. I'm just the janitor.

New answers.

DG, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I never clicked on that thread. What happened? Did someone post that bathtub shitter picture?

Kodanshi, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nope, it was just a Bad Idea and we'll leave it at that.

DG, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

kondanshi i broke up with the bathtub shitter but dg deleted my thread about it.

ethan, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the blackmail photos the bathtub shitter posted were very incriminating. i don't want to ever look at ethan that way again.

Maria, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what about dodgy material and stuff dg? images and the like, stuff that crashes browsers etc. will that still be deleted?

i think whatever you decide to do is fair enough DG, you're the moderator after all. if anyone doesn't like it, they can become a moderator on their own thing, so, yeh, its cool. for me, i can't complain if things get deleted, and i can't complain if they don't

gareth, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about stiff posted about other people (esp. if Googleable)?

Graham, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Individual libellous posts can still be deleted I think, and posts impersonating other people.

Tom, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I meant like Kate not wanting her real second name posted (and me).

Graham, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If someone else posts that kind of personal info about you you can ask for it to be deleted, definitely.

Tom, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Deleting threads is so very hard to do.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"stiff posted" ??? What means this, Graham Surname?

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have a feeling DG may be reconsidering his decision later today!

gareth, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, DG is right to behave the way he's doing, this is what I've always said because deleting things with your own judgement is always going to offend someone, people are adults here I'd like to think.

Basically the process of deletion on a board like this is tricky. On ILM it's easy, things unrelated to music can all be theoretically dumped, so any flame war or abuse or vaguely offensive to someone conversation can be deleted. But here...the thing is who should decide what is offensive? I find sex threads a little bothersome, I've learnt not to read them very much, though I've been doing so lately to try to overcome things. Someone else might find the suicide thread offensive; other people might find it helpful. So on and so forth. So as soon as you start deleting based on "XYZ thinks this is offensive" then you've basically got to delete everything otherwise you're going to be accused of favoritism and the entire thing falls apart.

I think it's best to just live how society lives, everyone does what they need to.

Ally, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Amen to that.

Pete, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I completely agree.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

seconded, i knew from the suicide thread title that due to my experiences i was never going to be able to h andle it, so i haven't read it...

I'm sorry things are taking this turn, freedom should be prtoected, people have the right to post what they want, but they shouldn't be personally attacking people, but if they do, they get it back... oh i don't know...i need a hug.

goeff, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geoff kudos to you for being here. I hope all of your days in the future are double digits. *hugs*

Samantha, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We were due a bit of a screaming fight anyway, it's been ages.

Ronan, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mm. I don't look forward to them myself.

Anyway, Ally = most correct.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't mean I looked forward to them as such, just that they're inevitable. Although after you calling me Judge Dredd yesterday I can understand your suspicion Ned : )

Ronan, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So long as you don't look like Sly Stallone, all is well. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's 00:36 right now and I've been out all day so I don't know if anything has happened (yet), but I think I'll stand by my decision with Tom's amendments.

DG, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

six years pass...

Any further thoughts on this DG?
