y'know, I remember when this came out and seeing press for it and stills, etc. but I don't think I ever actually saw the movie. It seems like it should be by Bakshi, but it isn't...

Thankyewverymuch.

I saw it a few years ago but it's all very vague in my memory, mixed up with other rock'n'roll fantasy animation movies of the era. I think it was quite good.

everything (everything), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

so no one saw this movie then.

(uh x-post sorry!)

i remember this flick from like 1983 HBO viewings. of course, it would take another 20 years to see it again and find out that the singing voices were robin zander & debbie harry

kingfish du lac (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

early 80's HBO used to show all sortsa crazy animated shit. this, a dubbed Galaxy Express 999, Animalympics, Mind Games, Captain Harlock, etc

kingfish du lac (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

my main memory of that HBO era is "Wizards" which fucked me up good n proper as a young'un.

hey, i mentioned this movie on ilm back in 2001 and no-one seemed to know what i was talking about then either. Rock movies: Head, Gimmie Shelter, etc....

but yes, i've seen it and it's pretty great - esp visually. the other one (early Nelvana movie) i mentioned back then as well was "The Devil and Daniel Mouse" which i remember loving even more, but that one i haven't seen since i was about ten, so likely a tainted memory. there were a few others too - Rome-0 and Julie-8, about two robots and there was an x-mas one that i forget the name of but had an awesome goose and three alien wise men.

To find this flick these days you have to go to an ancient video rental place that's been around for twenty five years and never clears out it's old stuff, which is all misfiled anyway.

everything (everything), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

comments on the imdb entry refer to a DVD edition being available...? (I doubt I'd actually buy this sight unseen, but I'd rent it)

(altho in general as I get older it does seem increasingly strange to me how much money it costs to make most films and how completely, utterly disposable and soon-to-be-forgotten-and-never-seen-again the majority of them are.)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, dvd came out last year

It's on Netflix, actually.

Had a few teachers who worked on this. The original plan was more sex & violence, older target market, more bizarro moebius-influenced designs, mick jagger voicing the villain. Mick threatened to sue, the movie went 2 years past schedule, got re-designed, story got compromised, Cheap Trick & Blondie no longer huge, distributors pulled out, sank on release. Sad but still a cool movie. My favorite part was the demon summoning at the end (background featuring actual animated Cow Guts in a Bucket by Chuck G., a guy I met while working with friends who worked for his studio.)

Mok is indeed very much Mick.

four years pass...

Haha, it makes so much sense that Shakey started this thread!

It is no longer on Netflix ;_;

I saw it on HBO as a really little kid.

Damn, someone must've stolen the last disc, I took it out last year from Netflix. Blu-ray version supposedly comes out in a month tho, so I'm sure the DVD will be reprinted.

Nhex, Thursday, 28 October 2010 05:54 (fifteen years ago)

save it to your DVD queue anyway to try to get them to order another one

Nhex, Thursday, 28 October 2010 05:55 (fifteen years ago)

I had this on VHS and watched it a million times, I don't even know why, it's not a particularly great movie? probably just cause I loved iggy pop's "pain & suffering".

i totally agree with it seemingly being a Bakshi movie that he didn't actually make - it's got that weird quality of animation, really labored, maybe it was particular to the time? the movie certainly isn't very good overall, but the look sticks with you

watched R&$ a couple years back, courtesy of netflix. didn't live up to my childhood memories, which weren't all that lustrous to begin with. as a sci-fi/comix geek, i'd been reading about the production for quite a while prior to the film's initial release (promising such things as rainbow burn mentions above), and was disappointed by the watered-down results. some nice animation and designs, but the humor's annoying and the story generic.

so, iggy's got non-LP soundtrack tunes in this & repo man. any others?
