Has anyone ever sold a domain name? Where should one do such a thing?

It pays to advertise, as the old advertising slogan goes.

I presume the minimum would be to put up a page under that name saying, "This domain name is for sale. Inquire here." With here linked to an email address with you on the other end.

...Then you wait for the offers to come rolling in.

I sold one recently, but it was to the small business I set it up for who finally decided they wanted to manage it themselves.

You can always use a service like this, or check to see if your registrar offers a "For Sale" option. Aimless's suggestion is good, but you should also modify your WHOIS info to somehow include the "Available - Contact me" information.

I actually was approached but it was by what appears to be a form letter (which I determined by googling the seller, and finding the same letter on a message board from someone else who he'd contacted...unfortunately all the discussion on that board was in norweigan so I don't know if he determined the dude was legit or not). but the letter did direct me to greatdomains (and someone else) because he wanted an appraisal certificate. may have just been a clever marketing ploy by an appraiser to get someone to pay for an appraisal? don't know. anyway i submitted it to greatdomains, we'll see if they take it.

I got my nice domain name a few years ago (1999 I'd guess) by free-associating on an 'availability' page.

It might go for a decent price nowadays, butwho would know this? Where are records of actual domain sales? You could try e-bay, but it's literally filled with unsold speculative ads, and there's no "exclude unsold" search on completed auctions.

how can you get a domain name back? i miss stevienixed dot com :-((((

Nathalie, some registrars will let you queue up for when the domain lapses (for a fee of course). Or you could find out who the owner is through WHOIS and contact them to see if they are interested in selling.

My brother had a domain name that was incredibly simple, like "movies.com" (that wasn't it, but I don't want to give away his identity.) He sold it for same crazy amount of money - like $200K plus $10 a month for two years.

Why on earth would you want the extra $240 ($10 x 24 months) on top of $200K? What a weird arrangement.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 26 June 2006 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

10k a month?

lf (lfam), Monday, 26 June 2006 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, why would you want an extra $240K? what could you possibly use it for?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 26 June 2006 05:14 (nineteen years ago)

He said "$10 a month" not "$10k a month".
