I'm throwing a barbeque party...please give me some tips!

Hey, I'm throwing a BBQ for about 25 people: most of which are my age (21, 22) also some younger kids and adults.

I'm counting on my awesome Dad to help cook...(I guess a bunch of hamburgers) also I'll buy some food. I also have a very weird and small pool in my backyard (it's cement and like 3 feet deep but it's cool) so we'll put that to some use.

I'm getting really into making an iPod playlist, and I really want to get people dancing. (I'm not sure if that will be really hard or really easy.) It's difficult because I love hip hop and I don't want to make the adults hate me or the party, or play things that are tooooo inappropriate for the younger kids. (most of it will go over their head i guess).

I don't know, I'm also not sure how long I should expect this to be and what to do to prevent people from getting bored. I feel like people are going to start going inside, and I was hoping to keep it mostly outside.

Yeah, that's pretty much it...I've never thrown a party or barbeue myself before so if any of you guys have any advice I'd really apreciate it!

Thanks!

Peace

Go find Three Feet High and Rising by De La Soul. Adult friendly, kid friendly, and yet good. Also matches your pool.

Obviously, A selection of Cold Chisel and Jimmy Barnes solo for the music.

Get some Belgian endive, quarter them lengthwise and grill them, slathering them periodically with balsamic vinaigrette. Put 'em in one of those burger-griller wire cage thingies. Takes a long time for them to get crispy at the edges because the leaves are so water-filled, but when they do, oooooweeee!

people won't get bored unless you invite boring people! get a mix of people that know each other and some that don't, we had a barbecue last sunday and bc i've just moved into a new place my flatmate's friends and mine had never met, everyone figuring out where everyone else fits in gives everyone stuff to talk about. Obv you don't want only people who've never met any of the other people there. Also that was my first barbecue (as one of the hosts) with a small child and a dog in attendance, and they provided plenty amusement for all.

I feel like people are going to start going inside, and I was hoping to keep it mostly outside.

Dunno where you live, but if the weather's like here it's pretty much inevitable at some point, it'll get a mite too cold to be outside a couple of hours after dark and they'll head in. You can delay it if you've got the speakers inside for the music to be heard outside, it's too loud for anyone to stay inside and they can't turn the music down because it's not fair for the people outside to have no music.

I think you have to let people do what they will, and go where they want. Go into it with as few expectations as possible: then things can’t “go wrong.” If someone wants to hear Brown Eyed Girl, but you had planned a mix that you know they’d like if they’d just listen (they might not – they’re the normals), be willing to accommodate. Don’t try to force your ideal afternoon on the spontaneous drunken vagaries of your guests. Likewise, if they want to go inside, good! If that’s what they want to do. Fuckin ride the snake, man.

If you have stacks of foid to cook and lots of impatient, hungry guests, it's always worth partially pre-cooking sausages, chicken etc in the kitchen oven first and then finishing them off on the barbecue grill.

Make sure any meats you grill are properly cooked through.

have ample seating and an extra can of bug-repellent. and ice. don't forget the vegetarians!

ai lien (kold_krush), Monday, 26 June 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Put food on wayy before people get hungry, or they'll dig in relative to how hungry they are as opposed to how cooked it is.

Tiki torches provide a nice atmosphere in twilight and at night.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Monday, 26 June 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

Get one of those citranella (sp?) candles that repell misquitoes. Do you have some sort of grass yard, or is it just the pool & concrete? If you have a yard, try setting up a game - horseshoes or cornhole or something.

Beverages can make or break your BBQ. Lemonade, iced tea, and beer are recommended.

Coronas are only for morning-after, when you can't cope with anything with flavour.
