Canadians, a stupid question, eh?

What is the Canadian equivalent for the surgeon general?

I am asking because on Sunday my father told me that his dad's family were v. medical and that his great uncle held this or a similar position in Canada in the early C20. Google and Wiki would be easier if I knew the job title, as am on fact-finding mission.

Chief Public Health Officer, perhaps?

Yes, but what did they call the person who did this job before? The current holder is the first to use the title.

Minister of Health?

Ha, we've got a Chief Dental Officer. Does he get special gold caps?

The top civil servant in the Ministry of Health is Morris Rosenberg Deputy Minister of Health.

I'll ask my dad more later, as this is the first I've heard about this and like all good Americans I know relatively SFA about CA.

Their information hotline is 1-800-O-CANADA! You can always give it a ring.

BE NICE TO ME. I tried that, it's the French number.

Well, I *am* a journalist, I could always mail the departmental press office and get them to figure out whether my dad is talking out his arse, or what.

Huk I thought you or Rob or the Q would totally know this.

Try calling your local library's reference line. They helped me all the time when I didn't have the internet, usually with crossword facts I cannot figure out. I liked to call them "the phoneternet."

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

Uh?
Eh?
Prior to that, Mm? (search for "Minister of Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment", apparently, or better yet the person's name).

(I understand if you're loathe to give out his name, but it would make the googling go much faster.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

There's also a Canadian Forces Surgeon General.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, link here, though I haven't found a list of its office holders yet.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

Also try going to Canada's National Archives and seeing what you dig up.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

By which I mean, search for his name there. If he had a role in the Canadian gov't, something ought to show up.

Casuistry, former professional factchecker (Chris Piuma), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

Chris, a likely candidate is Cecil Edwin C......., of Winnipeg (surgeon and author). If it's true, I'm chuffed. You're right - I never put my surname on ILX. But the middle name has been in my dad's family for generations (was my great-grandfather's first name). Will ask my dad.

My grandfather's family were all Ulster Scots doctors who went to Canada from Fermanagh. I'm not totally sure, but the implication is that they brought lace curtains with 'em.
