T/S: Lego vs Mega Bloks

Both now have pirate sets, as shown here.

One has a standard of quality hard to beat, but the other has a far better cost as well as lacking the anti-military thing...

Lego sets will run you up to $300, which is just insane.

I am unfamiliar with these Mega Bloks of which you speke. Lego for me.

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

My husband is a complete Lego freak. We buy them for the kids, sure, but he loves to buy the bigger sets for himself. I know if I asked him what he thought of Mega Bloks, that he would not be kind to them.

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

When I went upstairs and asked my husband about Mega Bloks, he said, "they are cheap plastic rip-offs."

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

not necessarily. word has it that there's been fantastic improvements to mega blok quality control.

plus, they actually have fighter plane sets, etc

however, folks have done custom lego weaponry, so you can have Lego WWII fights now

kingfish du lac (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

lego in a landslide.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

kingfish, my husband is set in his ways and there is no point in arguing with him. He's also a LEGO fanatic; I'm not going to try to talk up Mega Bloks to him! (Our son does have some Mega Bloks, however, a gift from my sister. But lots more LEGO sets.)

My big gripe with these things is that the pieces hurt my bare feet if I step on them at night. (Not so much with the great housekeeping here.)

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

LEGO is better for a multitude of reasons, one of which is the anti-military aspect. Who wants their kids building weaponry? Not me.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

Although I do remember having this one when I was a kid, and it has weapons on the front (and I think the guy has his own little laser pistol).

Also I had this one which has bigass laser beams on the front. Possibly my favourite lego set ever!

We have Big Lego and Mega Blocks. I bought one and we were then given the other. I can't remember the difference. They are really great though, so simple. Mind you, minidiscs have taken over as the toy of choice at the moment.

Oh god the memories!
This was the "big present" of what must have been 1989:

That particular set is a marvel of design. You can't really tell from the picture, but it's engineered so the back can open up to perfectly accommodate the portable prison cell thing with what looked like laser bars. So many wings were movable and doors and hatches opened and closed on that set that it was practically a transformer.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 06:40 (nineteen years ago)

I still have that around here somewhere, Dan! It really was fantastic. Got a bunch of the other space sets shown above too. My brother and I would experiment with dropping ships we made down the laundry chute to the room below to determine durability, and to come up with designs that could safely make the journey without exploding to bits. Once while examining the wreckage, we had managed to forget to close the laundry chute up above, and one of the cats decided it would be a fab idea to jump down it.

Legos always had weapons involved, Andrew. From the lasers/rockets of the space stuff, to the knives and pistols of the pirates, and swords of the medieval sets.

fuck a mega blok!

i had 497, 897, 6821, 6820, and 6824 and the stilty space snuffler thing kingfish posted. everything wound up being broken down and subsumed into the enormous bag of legos, though, which probably weighed as much as i did at that point. as far as i'm concerned legos are the only reason to have kids.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)
