That other thread plus learning about the yiffy shit has damaged me permanently, BTW.

quincie (quincie), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe I mean Tenley? It looked like it was off the FH metro but I could be totally wrong, I'm not "good" at things like maps. But, anyway, sold!

Allyzay will never stop making pancakes (allyzay), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

OK I'll call Greggg and ask if he recommends anyone at Tenley, although god knows he wasn't helpful with OT suggestions.

Saturday looks like good pool lounging weather!

Allyzay will never stop making pancakes (allyzay), Thursday, 13 July 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

You should have made peach lasgana. I hear tell that cats love lasagna.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 13 July 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

My cats don't, or at least they don't come looking when we eat it. Mr. Kitty likes tortilla chips and potato chips, and Ben apparently likes...peaches. And he's usually a little over-interested in coffee products, but I think that's because he's trying to figure out which container is the milk.

Allyzay will never stop making pancakes (allyzay), Thursday, 13 July 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

That's so weird. I coulda sworn I read somewhere that cats love lasagna. Where was it?

Doonesbury.

xpost- i've been in new york for the last few years, but as a d.c. 80s baby, i can't imagine things have gotten that bad. though, if it moves real estate down... not entirely bad.

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/07/12/D8IQH9P05.html

Luis (one six oh), Thursday, 13 July 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

HEY DUDE LUIS DC REAL ESTATE IS GERAT. I MEAN GREAT. YEAH! WE GOT A POOL AND STUFF. PLACES FOR THE CAT TO CHILL LIKE SILLS WINDOWSILLS. . .IT COSTS LOTS OF DOLLAR BILLS THOUGH. WE GOT GHETTO GRILLS BY WHICH WE CHILLZ AND EAT BURGERS, GRILLED.

In other news, I have to run a meeting in August w/all the other libearians throughout the country in August and I'm scared. It involves Live Meeting and teleconferencing and stuff. That sucks.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 13 July 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

Not all the libearans. Just the ones in my company, obvs.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 13 July 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

wow. ouch. sorry for invading your space.

i was just trying to add, as one who grew up in the city during its more notorious years, that i can't imagine things are really that bad. as allyzaz noted, it appears that it is just a few crimes in the small "right" part of town.

the real estate comment was just a hope that i can one day return to d.c. and pay less than i do in new york. right now that is far from the case. i would like a pool, although i do have a grill (it's not that gangsta, tho :( )

xpost- i hope the st. ex jukebox stays safe dude.

how bout them nats?

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

mr. met is way cooler than screech. but i've traded years of hopeless orioles devotion for a just as hopeless devotion to the nats.

i hope things turn around after the break. i'm going to try to catch a game when i swing through town.

As for the nyc/dc housing debate, i've been living quite comfortably and safely in washington heights for under $850. not the most desirable location, but i like the brownstone apartment i found. can't really find a comprable deal in d.c. but i'll be looking again in may.

xpost- sorry i'm so defensive, just new to the board

one six oh (one six oh), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

And how could you possibly think that it costs more to live in DC v. NYC?

Because it's true? one six oh I got your back.

Also Washington Heights is totally awesome, have you been to Christ Coffee? That was across the street from my house.

Allyzay will never stop making pancakes (allyzay), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

Is that really true?

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

christ coffee, no. where is it?

one six oh (one six oh), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

I was a block from Dupont Circle for not much more than 850 from 99 to 01. Have things really changed that much?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

UH

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

It is really true that if you avoid the trendy "boho" hoods, a renter in NYC gets about the same deal as a renter in DC does now. And sometimes better, since NYC has a more pervasive mass transit network, plus less segregated by class and race than DC is. By a long shot. Washington Heights is like living on the 14th st. side of Columbia Heights, kinda.

Gabbneb: try 2X for rent prices, by your metric vs. Ally & I, and 3X-4X for people who bought around that time. Flip it.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

hint: look at the URL, then look at the page. And back again.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

gabbneb, it's called "President Bush," get with the program.

Christ Coffee is on 168th, near Amsterdam. There's also a place called Jesus Taco but I don't remember where that was exactly.

What no one keeps in mind when they talk about the cost of NYC versus (blank) is that they purely look at housing prices and nothing else. That being said I know several not-rich people who have recently purchased large-enough houses in Brooklyn so I don't even buy the housing argument re: DC because I couldn't buy a similar house for the same money in, like, Reston right now.

xpost Tom please keep in mind our current rent at 2x gabb's price in the exact same location is considered a massive steal by all and sundry!!!

Allyzay will never stop making pancakes (allyzay), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

well i was in a studio too; i think the 1bds were 12-1400ish (which seems not to have changed much?)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

tom wtf is going on with those links???

xpost gabbneb I repeat: we're paying 2x what you did and it is considered a drop dead steal by everyone we know. Most people are paying 3-4x what you did (for 1bds, I didn't look into studios at all).

In arlington our pretending-to-be-a-1bdrm was $1200 and the dude raised it when we left.

Allyzay will never stop making pancakes (allyzay), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Basically it's pretty expensive in DC to live anywhere near a metro stop, supposed "NYC prices" to live anywhere near a metro stop. You can get better deals by moving away from a metro but then you have to have a car which doesn't really balance out very well in the end (IMO). The real estate is basically coming close to being equitably priced in both cities and for what you get I think ppl in DC are being ripped off more. But I would think that, so I won't throw in my subjective and get yelled at by Pete like infamous METRO VERSUS SUBWAY day. ;_;

Allyzay will never stop making pancakes (allyzay), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm thinkin' price of rent/whatever, cost of groceries, cost of transportation, etc. That's what I'm curious about.

I didn't mean to scare anyone away w/my stupidity! or crassness.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

the d.c. rental market really is terrifying. especially when you consider mass transit access important.

a buddy of mine recently moved to hobart pl. (off of georgia). when i was a middle schooler at alice deal that was like the most badass place kids would tag up in their textbooks. it was a pretty rough drug block. point is he splits a 3 bedroom for around $2000 and the block is rife with hill types. the park in the middle block demarcates the old resident from the new. it's altogether perplexing.

i just wonder what's left for your middle income resident?

one six oh (one six oh), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

as for transport- i love my dc metro, but nyc has the monthly unlimited card for $76. I worked in dc last summer, and was surprise how much more expensive the subway is without an unlimited pass.

groceries are a tossup. in the heights we have c-town (crappy produce, good deals on most goods), but as you inch downtown the quality iproves and the prices shoot up.

one six oh (one six oh), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

Basically it's pretty expensive in DC to live anywhere near a metro stop, supposed "NYC prices" to live anywhere near a metro stop.

Unless yr livin in chateau de ZR! Admittedly chateau de ZR is technically in Maryland, but close enough says I.

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

It kind of sucks in a way because I'd be able to justify listening to numerous "STAY IN DC" requests if it wasn't basically the same cost as NYC was/is. I mean things might change down the line but srsly DC please sell yourself to me better.

xpost oh dude, groceries are totally the same both places. Transport is a little harder to define because NYC has only one rate for any trip while DC has variable rates? But then NYC has the unlimited card which then makes the rate variable depending on how often you ride and DC has no unlimited card etc etc. That being said there are way more subway stops than metro stops so you have a far lesser chance of paying your $2 and then having to walk 1.5 miles or drive the rest of your journey so it depends on how you look at it. I don't drive so I need public transport so I have to live near a metro which is retarded expensive here, but I never had to think about whether I'd be near a subway in NY.
