"Styles" in Microsoft Word

is there any way to turn this fucking "feature" off? all it does is fuck up my shit 24/7, changing text back to times new roman 10pt or whatever because i dared to hit enter, or backspaced at the beginning of a line.

I HATE STYLES.

STYLE WARS NOW!

i find styles a lot easier to handle if you set the 'tools' menu, 'options', 'view' tab, 'style width area' to a couple of centimeters or so so you can see all the styles down the side (and not just the one for the area the cursor is currently in)

(unfortunately OpenOffice doesn't seem to have this option)

koogy wonderland (koogs), Thursday, 29 June 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Select the entire document. Go to Styles and Formatting under Format. Click "Clear Formatting". It can save your sanity, unless something has fucked up your "normal style". I don't think you can completely remove the Style though.

HINT: MS Word is bad.

what do you use? i know word sucks but what's a good OSX alt?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 29 June 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

Not using Styles in Word is like not using numbers in Excel. They pretend it's not that way, but the whole thing is absolutely based on styles, and they're responsible for 80% of the "what?! Why the fuck did it just erase all my bullets/indent that par/delete all my text??" moments in word.

Use Nisus Writer Express for sanity in word processing on OS X.

stet (stet), Thursday, 29 June 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

quark express or text edit. never touch word if i can help it. funny the pro design program is easier to use than the consumer word processor.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Thursday, 29 June 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if there's an InDesign plugin that strips styles from incoming text...that would be totally handy. Leave the attributes, but strip all of the Word bullshit out and call it [no paragraph style].

I will commence to drop a knowledge bomb. (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 29 June 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

Save it as plain text. Forget about attributes: use *bold* and _italics_ or whatever, and search and replace to real fonts later.

stet (stet), Thursday, 29 June 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

Actually that's Word's glaring fundamental failing: there's no [no style]. Every paragraph must have a style, which results in fudges when you turn two differently-styled pars into one. As writers are wont to.

stet (stet), Thursday, 29 June 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

i just wish there was a way it wouldn't try to be "smart" and auto-style stuff.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 29 June 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

worst: copy-pasting from web to Word doc

it's like roman numerals, without zero

InDesign CS2 has a "paste without formatting" option.

Styles in word are wonderful. Normal is for the birds.

Fuck Word, it does lots of random stuff without you asking it to. I miss Clarisworks.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Friday, 30 June 2006 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

Styles are handy when you've built your own set and you know where you want them (ie when your company demands a certain layout and font and etc on its docos) but yeah, I hate the way it randomly messes styles around and wont not-format things. Honestly, I too think I've found Quark and Pagemaker easier to use.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 30 June 2006 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

Apple's kind-of Word alternative, Pages, isn't half bad. I'm not sure if I'd recommend it for general use, but it seemed to have some merit.

no shit, but what choice do you have? ive found myself in the position of having to buy microsoft office for the first time ever. i cant believe how much it costs. holy shit. can everyone afford to blow $300 on a word processing program? seems to me only companies should be charged that kind of $$. is there any way around the price?

How can anyone love Word? It has been stagnated in terms of USEFUL FEATURES since Office 98 (annoying office toolbar that duplicates Windows funcationality edition!)

There's no good and simple revision management for online collaboration and offline merging of versions etc

I switched to a combination of InDesign, Pages, and NeoOffice. I'm >this< close to banishing Office off of my laptop completely once I get the final bits of my Entourage mboxes imported into FileMaker

Fsck Washing Ong's Hat (Chris Barrus), Friday, 30 June 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

Dear God -- why did you ever use Entourage?

HAHAHAHAHA

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Friday, 30 June 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

Dear God -- why did you ever use Entourage?

Way back in the OS 8 & 9 era I was using Claris Emailer. MS bought out the entire Emailer programming team and then incorporated the never-released Emailer 3.0 code into Entourage. I switched to OS X Mail when I first got the Rhapsody beta and haven't gone back.

However, I've got a couple years worth of mailing list archives in non-standard, non-mbox files. I wrote a series of AppleScripts that will process them into Entourage and then export the Entourage mboxes into FileMaker. I can't be arsed to rewrite all the scripts, since I can't be bothered to overcome my sloth at finishing off the job.

Fsck Washing Ong's Hat (Chris Barrus), Friday, 30 June 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

Mail will import from Entourage pretty well. What's utter, utter shit though is that the current version dropped the mbox format because Spotlight couldn't handle it. Boo.

Totally. I was getting a lot of pity after I told my classmates I wrote all my papers in Illustrator, but even that's easier than fucking Word.

I hate this feature, too, especially when one is copying and pasting. I seem to have to do that a lot.

youn (youn), Saturday, 1 July 2006 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

i absolutely love styles. i have set up my own styles templates on all my computers with keyboard shortcuts. i only really got into this a couple of years ago, it's beyond me how i ever got by without it before.

gem (trisk), Saturday, 1 July 2006 07:09 (nineteen years ago)

Mail will import from Entourage pretty well.

I know that... I just don't want to rewrite the scripts (AppleScripting Mail is an entirely different beast than Entourage)

Fsck Washing Ong's Hat (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 1 July 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Exactly! How can anyone survive using Word without using styles?

Styles are no help if you know how to format text.

The first thing I do whenever I get a new computer is work out how to get Word to not auto-apply styles and suchlike to my documents.
