that's not a crow isn't it? it's beak seems too long and thin and it appears to be too round and chubby.
your thoughts/feel free to post bird pictures yourself etc

Sort of a black magpie that. Do they say 'grackle' or something?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 30 June 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

That grackle needs to work on its hygiene.

This is harder. At first glance I thought 'Crossbill', then 'Bullfinch'. Then I thought 'Crossbill' again. It would help if I knew where and in what habitat you saw these birds.

I'm now checking Wikipedia...

Just got offed, Sunday, 25 November 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

do you live in texas, sebastien?

gershy, Sunday, 25 November 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

...yeah, it's a Two-Barred Crossbill. You don't get them in Britain, but as the bird is clearly a crossbill of sorts, and has those white markings on its wings, it could only be this.

Just got offed, Sunday, 25 November 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

gershy
The Internets ideal of gershy, defined as combined cuteness and creepyness.
That thing is so gershy I just want to pick it up and fling it across the room!

three years pass...

can you identify this bird?

we were out at the marin headlands and saw about 6 of these - 2 like this, who would puff up all their feathers and fan their beautiful tales and generally act douchey to the other 4 smaller, less glamorous birds (i'm guessing this is a male). i don't know anything about birds but i'd be interested to find out what this is.

just1n3, Sunday, 20 March 2011 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

Turkeys! Either wild or escaped.

ka£ka (NickB), Sunday, 20 March 2011 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

really?!?

just1n3, Sunday, 20 March 2011 00:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that's a turkey!
This thread makes me miss grackles.

Looking Man (Abbbottt), Sunday, 20 March 2011 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

wow i didn't know they could look so awesome. guess it's bc i don't come from the land of turkeys.

but what is with that weird hair-like ponytail hanging from its chest

just1n3, Sunday, 20 March 2011 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

Did you know Ben Franklin wanted them to be the U.S.'s national bird?

Looking Man (Abbbottt), Sunday, 20 March 2011 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

also idk I wld guess the chest tuft is for seducing babes?

Looking Man (Abbbottt), Sunday, 20 March 2011 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

That tufty bit gets referred to as a beard, but it's more of a chest wig thing imo.

ka£ka (NickB), Sunday, 20 March 2011 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

something about it was really disturbing - i guess maybe bc it looked like a piece of hair cut off a dead person and glued to the bird's chest? but everything else about them was spectacular - weird iridescence on their heads.

just1n3, Sunday, 20 March 2011 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

Domesticated turkeys actually look like this:

Looking Man (Abbbottt), Sunday, 20 March 2011 01:07 (fifteen years ago)

my office backs onto a state park and we get tons of turkeys wandering around the parking lot or on the back patio...best is in mating season, they all sit up on the fence and try to out-impress the ladies, it's pretty awesome

VegemiteGrrl, Sunday, 20 March 2011 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

I keep my distance though, I have a deep and abiding distrust of birds since I got chased by a goose when I was 10

VegemiteGrrl, Sunday, 20 March 2011 01:10 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the one i posted the pic of was pretty bold - i had some bread and i was feeding them, and this one kept coming right up to me. i think if i hadn't been fast enough at handing out the crusts, it would've snatched them right out of my hand.
