Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 1 July 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yes Michael I know of that thread but this is the greatest pop single of the 80s and perhaps ever. It is perfect.

Venga (Venga), Saturday, 1 July 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

agreed. thread (more for ILM no?) over then?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 1 July 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

Alcohol is a ruthless duchess.

def. one of the PSBs' finest moments. maybe one of dusty's too, but she's had lots of them.

jacques lu c on t (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 1 July 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

Dusty has done better. PSB not.

David Orton (scarlet), Saturday, 1 July 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

no, that doesn't make sense cos psb = better than dusty although dusty is v. good.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 1 July 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

David Orton (scarlet), Saturday, 1 July 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 2 July 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

"Rent" is better than this song, as are "Yesterday When I Was Mad", "In Denial", "New York City Boy", "Love Comes Quickly" and numerous of their B-sides.

Still, great great song.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Sunday, 2 July 2006 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

"Goin' Back" > "What have I done to deserve this"
but on the whole
PSB > Dusty.

but it is comparing really great with really very great

I quite like how the WEG version gives more prominence to the "We don't have to..." outro by making it an intro as well, the backing is probably a bit simlar (albeit faster) than their cover of "Being Boring" - similar settings anyway. But the singing is pretty hideous! Magnus doesn't sound like the throaty, lovelorn crooner he usually is, and Isabela seems to be resorting to running the words together which ruins the BEST BIT OF THE SONG i.e. "At night the people come and go...".. there's something about how she renders the "th" noise as "d" I find annoyingly lazy.

edwardo, Thursday, 19 June 2008 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

To be honest I've only listened to it once and really didn't really paid much attention to it, I thought it was meh. But to me the vocals pretty much ruin most WEG songs anyway; too chipmunky. I guess I like them more in theory than in practice. Also, the person behind their image/design is clearly a genius. The cover above is completely WTF! I was kind of disappointed to hear that the other one left.

This makes me curious. That condensed outro is one of the most frustrating, beautiful things I've ever heard, so hurrah for someone doing something with it...just not these two.

I think it's probably not her fault. She sounds like she's still struggling a bit with her English.

daavid, Thursday, 19 June 2008 01:11 (seventeen years ago)

^^^"really didn't really"="I didn't really"

daavid, Thursday, 19 June 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, this is true, but covering songs where Tennant's crisp enunciation is going to be massacred by rendering that dry "th" sound as "d" means not playing to strengths. The chipmunky vocals worked really well on "Domino Dancing" because they were a lot looser, and also on "Rent" because it still sounded scared and frightened, but here.. it just sounds like comedy ESL. And I love Magnus Carlson's voice so I'm really sad to hear it sounding like this!

edwardo, Thursday, 19 June 2008 01:23 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe they should have translated the songs to Swedish. Not that many people would be able to complain about the lyrics.

daavid, Thursday, 19 June 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

I'd never even heard about Magnus Carlson before and there doesn't seem to be a Wikipedia entry on him. From the pic I thought it was an opera singer. What kind of music does he do?

daavid, Thursday, 19 June 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

He's the lead singer of Weeping Willows, a Swedish rock group. They started out wanting to be Elvis, then they were basically Morrissey singing love songs for a bit, and now they're kind of vaguely country. Almost all their songs are about love being shit!

Quick POX for you: Blue And Alone, Broken Promise Land, Touch Me, Lost Love, Heart of Hearts, Hold Me, I'm Gonna Let Love Find Me, The Burden, The Moon Is My Witness, Drifting Away,

Thanks :)
