Poptimism is back! Saturday July 29th, the Slaughtered Lamb. 7pm-1am, it'll be FREE and it'll be POP. See you there? (A big shout out to PETE for being the one who actually got off his arse and sorted a night out.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 3 July 2006 10:54 (eighteen years ago) link

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 3 July 2006 10:57 (eighteen years ago) link

MC OTM.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Woo!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:08 (eighteen years ago) link

(i am imagining the contents of this thread as bellowed out by missy elliott over a Hott Beatt)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a funny feeling that I'm doing something that weekend. But I can't for the life of me remember what. Camping? It's not the weekend of Truck.

Custard Subsidence (kate), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Who's doing the guest DJ-ing?

(I know it's not me because I was about 3-4 months on the waiting list at the time of the last one).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Dunno yet - the way the Lamb is set up, maybe EVERYBODY will do it.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Does it have a juke box on every table, like in some American diners, and whoever gets their money in first gets to pick the next song? That would be AWESOME.

Custard Subsidence (kate), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:25 (eighteen years ago) link

It's air-conditioned, right?

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:32 (eighteen years ago) link

gah, i was very excited until i realised that we'll be in cardiff to see madonna. next time...

toby (tsg20), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Is this where the pilgrims set out from in The Geofferey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:37 (eighteen years ago) link

gah, i was very excited until i realised that we'll be in cardiff to see madonna. next time...

I WILL GLADLY SWAP YOU

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:48 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, i don't regret deciding to go see madonna in cardiff, but there's loads of fun stuff happening in london that weekend.

will poptimism be more of a regular thing for a while? i've missed it!

colette (a2lette), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:54 (eighteen years ago) link

TS: Top pop fun in London venue vs. going all the way to Wales to see skanky old ho get her buns out on stage.

ledge (ledge), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh come on, surely a pair of drunk thirty-somethings fiddling with CD decks to try and find Tight Fit's "Fantasy Island" beats the Queen of Pop ANY TIME.

xpost this is a one-off for the moment but we want a regular thing again soon, yes.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:55 (eighteen years ago) link

yay brilliant!

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:55 (eighteen years ago) link

will there be wyatting?

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Pete's sets are always 100% pure wyatting.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh bugger, I've actually doubled-booked the 29th already, thinking you were doing this the week beforehand.

I love how the Lex's anti-Slaughtered Lamb stance has suddenly evaporated.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Poptimism wouldn't be Poptimism without a Matt DC double-book.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I am still very much anti-Slaughtered Lamb! I am trying to studiously ignore it because although they are evil in there my pro-Poptimism stance outweighs my anti-Slaughtered Lamb stance.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:05 (eighteen years ago) link

It's actually a triple-book - I will have to let down both my parents and my housemate (whose birthday it is) in order to make this.

Or I *could* steer her in the direction of the Slaughtered Lamb because she hasn't made dancing plans yet AFAIK. I'm not bringing my parents though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:06 (eighteen years ago) link

When it gets to my turn I may be doing a little baileying...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:07 (eighteen years ago) link

But Anna wanted to assess their Welshness!

Custard Subsidence (kate), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:12 (eighteen years ago) link

I am unbelievably excited about this. :D

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Gosh darn it, I REALLY want to come to this but I've got a party that night. Arse.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:24 (eighteen years ago) link

make the party come to poptimism, Jim!

SO EXCITED.

permanent revolution (cis), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:28 (eighteen years ago) link

marvellous.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:41 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll try cis, I'll try!

JimD (JimD), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, bollocks. I've got to go to a housewarming. Maybe I'll come along for the first two hours and be a solitary early doors disco dancer...

Flyboy (Flyboy), Monday, 3 July 2006 13:40 (eighteen years ago) link

bring the housewarming along!!!

oh no, hold on, that doesn't really work, does it...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 3 July 2006 14:18 (eighteen years ago) link

This is also (god Tom Ewing - you'd think he'd remember)
THE FREAKY TRIGGER RELAUNCH PARTY.

Sometime in the next couple of weeks, FT will be relaunching with some exciting new features (possibly) and many of the old ones in a new snazzy design to make it easier for things to go from eye to brain withough need of anything in between!

Similar technology shall be tried out at Poptimism but for the ears.

Slaughtered Lamb probably not a long term venue as they don't really like clubs there. But were not xactly a club are we chums?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 July 2006 15:49 (eighteen years ago) link

You should try badgering the Phoenix right behind Oxford Circus. They had an empty downstairs room the last time we were there on a Saturday. Maybe a bit big but it is VERY central.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 3 July 2006 15:54 (eighteen years ago) link

They wouldn't let the MDC & Stevem Mobile Disco put a night on but at least you guys have a dedicated following you can point to.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 3 July 2006 15:55 (eighteen years ago) link

We will confront them with stories of interweb goths bitterly fighting each other to squeeze into the Slaughtered Lamb.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 3 July 2006 15:56 (eighteen years ago) link

They wouldn't let the MDC & Stevem Mobile Disco put a night on but at least you guys have a dedicated following you can point to.

Actually they never got back to us with any kind of answer at all but nor did I chase it up, foolishly and fearsomely.

(Sorry.)

Ken by dexterity do you mean you tilt your head when you click the category links?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 13 July 2006 16:13 (eighteen years ago) link

it could be a new dance move for the night. do the slanty-cat-click.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 13 July 2006 16:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Ken tilts his head anyway - he'd never make it on Big Brother.

the music wasnt very good, but it was nice to talk to MC and ML, who i dont talk to enough

-- (688), Sunday, 30 July 2006 01:14 (eighteen years ago) link

that sounded harsh, perhaps it was the pain of listening to sultans of ping

-- (688), Sunday, 30 July 2006 01:15 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm sorry, it was a request though...

i fell asleep on the bus home and woke up in wood green, well done me.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 30 July 2006 10:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Yay! Fun times.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Sunday, 30 July 2006 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

The bits I saw of Poptimism I enjoyed very much, although it was way too hot in the Slaughtered Lamb. 'On A Ragga Tip' almost killed me.

The Lex arriving, looking drunkenly bewildered, then jumping over a table to dance to Paris Hilton, knocking two glasses over on the way, was very funny.

I apologise for doing the Sticky And Brown dance. Never again.

My housemate's birthday party was sandwiched between two hen nights. Much badness ensured. I wish I could have stayed at Poptimism for longer, though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 30 July 2006 10:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I had a very good time dancing to records I don't like which is always the sign of the top night.

I enjoyed talking to the people I had before, and the people I hadn't. I was disappointed that the Stylus crew were such lightweights and left early before I had a chance to chat though.

I listened to my free CD yesterday and liked it very much.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Monday, 31 July 2006 07:50 (eighteen years ago) link

BOSH! BOSH! BOSH! BOSH! BOSH! BOSH! BOSH!!!

So what happened to everyone after I left the purple booze spaceship of the lost rivers of Clerkenwell?

Heh, I've never seen a dance floor clear so quick as when they put on Sticky and Brown. Hurrah!

I was happy to hear the Sultans of Ping, there's never enough SoP at clubs any more. Though I did thankfully manage to protect The Lex from ever having his ears sullied with Carter.

So that's the Paris Hilton single? Proof that all the money in the world can buy you good songwriters, good producers, a good tune, but STILL can't make you able to carry said tune in a bucket.

However, I think I like the Lilly Allen single. Oh, the shame.

Silver Machine Manor (kate), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:21 (eighteen years ago) link

The Lex's first three dances were two ska songs and "I Love Rock'N'Roll"!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Sticky and Brown was proof positive that indie kids don't dance to things they don't know...

The vacumn was soon filled though with trendsetters and Matt Dc.

Oh, it was hot.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:36 (eighteen years ago) link

i would've danced to 'sticky and brown'!

making my grand entrance to paris hilton was one of the finest moments ever.

'my humps' was another memorable highlight.

there were some moments of UTTER HORROR interspersed among the bosh goodness. my poor, poor, poor ciara :(((((

i finally got to sleep at around 3am, i think!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:40 (eighteen years ago) link

well good! i danced for a bit. wish i could have stayed longer.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks to everyone who attended! I had a good time and (with the exception of Scooter and whatever badness I played right towards the end) played nothing I had ever played before at Poptimism, which was my 'aim'.

If you didn't get a free CD, I will be making more of them during the week.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I apologise for at some point upbraiding the people just outside the doors to the sweatbox-like venue with "Dance, you fuckers!". I'm not sorry for much else, though I was pretty broken for most of yesterday.

It did remind me to upload a photo a friend of mine took (and expertly adjusted) some seven or eight years ago:

http://static.flickr.com/63/202274348_8572b0c760_o.jpg

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I was disappointed at our failure to form a secure enough perimeter around Lex when the Futureheads started up.

Fantastic and very very sweaty night!

robster (robster), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Rob your set slew the dancefloor (in a good way). Big thanks - I had numbers of Today's Young People coming up and asking me "what on earth is this" during the Associates.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks for bringing your friends Rob, it was nice to see their reaction to finding somewhere that must will play Carter.

xpost - Hooray, I'm young again!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:50 (eighteen years ago) link

"My Humps" is even worse than I could possibly have imagined.

Silver Machine Manor (kate), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:51 (eighteen years ago) link

IN THE BACK AND IN THE FRONT

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Be thankful we didn't play the bosh version Kate.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 31 July 2006 08:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I was describing Bosh to Kate earlier, and luckily the example I used was Winds of Change. Imagine my "surprise" etc.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:00 (eighteen years ago) link

MILKY MILKY RIIIIIIIGHT

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I was very pleased to walk through the door just as "Club Country" was playing. I felt a scintilla of what I imagine it must have been like for Ver Lex arriving to Paris.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:04 (eighteen years ago) link

'Stars Are Blind' / 'Smile' cross-fader action should've happened.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:08 (eighteen years ago) link

the way that verse flows is beautiful

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:08 (eighteen years ago) link

That Paris Hilton record is worse than I had anticipated. It sounds like UB40!

Among my observations from later in the night was the realisation that SexyBack kills the dancefloor stone dead. Everyone was going up to the DJ and going "what is this shit?" Poor Justin.

Please, please tell me the much-vaunted Ciara vs Killers bootleg was played after I left.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:08 (eighteen years ago) link

it all builds up to the final exclamation of HUMPS! so well

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:09 (eighteen years ago) link

if i'd been there i would've danced to 'sexyback' as well! 'sexyback' is amazing. my friend kicking_k played it at it came from the sea the other week and it went down a storm.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:09 (eighteen years ago) link

and re paris, i keep telling people, the admittedly dodgy backing is not why the song is good, the music is irrelevant. what makes it the best song i have ever heard is the transcendent beauty of paris's vocal performance and the utterly gorgeous lyrics

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:10 (eighteen years ago) link

'stars are blind' is an AFFIRMATION OF HOPE and a BEACON OF TRUTH

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Lex, I love you, but you're so wrong. The backing track and song are both fine, it's like a modern update of The Tide Is High. It's Paris herself and the fact that she cannot sing, she just kind of mewls breathlessly like a kitten in a sack waiting to drown.

Silver Machine Manor (kate), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:17 (eighteen years ago) link

oh she can't sing at all! it's the vulnerability and soul in her voice which makes it great, she sounds lost and confused and screwed-over but still hopeful and yearning. the backing vocals are kind of gorgeous like kisses from heaven too.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:19 (eighteen years ago) link

It's alright but it's no Midi Maxi and Efti.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:22 (eighteen years ago) link

I have with a heavy heart had to contact the Indie Board and report one Emsk for being seated during Carter/Sultans/True Faith, but then getting up and dancing to Heart of Glass. Her Indie Membership Card has been revoked, and must be returned and re-issued to new recruits. Or y'know, just give it straight to The Lex.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:42 (eighteen years ago) link

emsk danced during 'true faith' (which ISN'T INDIE, it's got NO GUITARS)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:44 (eighteen years ago) link

True Faith does so have guitars. A bass guitar is still a guitar.

Silver Machine Manor (kate), Monday, 31 July 2006 09:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Its almost implicit in the name "bass guitar" I think.

Lovely, lovely guitar & bosh based music. The New Rave is almost upon us.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 31 July 2006 10:31 (eighteen years ago) link

The stars are blind and Lex is apparently deaf ;)
