skimming that social cream (warning: meta)

So, do members of the ILX community/clique/whatever (and yes I know some of you are going to deny that there is one) just kinda skim over everybody else's posts sometimes? Hell, how about everybody else? I know when I don't have much time I find myself scanning quickly through threads looking for a post by some of the more frequent, uh, posters, that I can be more sure will have a chance of being relatively astute or interesting.

Thankfully, I think the top down, singular thread structure of greenspun plays against this. Otherwise, like what happens often in Usenet, you have regulars replying to regulars' comments, and overlooking/dismissing those of less frequent posters, making the discussions that much more insular.

Agreed. I do very much like Greenspun.

This comes into play when I access new threads after a break, though. I go to the front page and look at:

- the ones with interesting titles then - the ones by posters i like best then - the other ones if I have time.

I try and read every thread and every comment on said threads, but sometimes I will be in a rush. It all comes down to time availability, really.

Does this mean that Raggeti reads my comments? W00-H00!

I don't know that I look to read any particular posters first, I usually just get drawn into certain threads. For example, I found the "White Men Who Exclusively Date Asian Women" really interesting because of all the points being made and read it all pretty carefully. Stuff I'm not really bothered about I will skim to see if it mutates into anything interesting.

And then there are the really contentious FITE type threads which I just try to completely avoid right now because I don't want nor need the added aggravation.

try and read them all, unless its something i'm really not interested in (but even then they have a tendency to spin away from their origins and become something i might be interested in)

the very long, detailed or heavy threads i print off and read on the tube on the way home from work

I generally read from the last contribution upwards...so if a thread has had 60 responses, I may sometimes only read the last ten or so, and skim the rest...which, isn't a great thing to do. I like to open all the threads, so I have no real preference for posts by certain posters. I like ILe on the weekends best as I have more time to read what's going on and be involved.

as a new participant, I am wandering if people often return to past threads as I have missed some very good topics that I might have wanted to contribute my two penn'worth to. Alas, alack, etc, nothing profound was missed but still.

Wilfred - by all means contribute to old threads. Most people click on the 'New Answers' link from the front page to see what has been added to, so thread revivals don't go unnoticed at all (have a look at the start dates of some of the ones in there for yourself now).

I only skim if I've got loads to catch up on. Otherwise I read EVERYTHING, unless it's an inpenetrable hAxOr thing.

what N. said, first thing I check out the new threads that were added since I went home the night before, then go to the new answers page and stay there all day, or so it seems at the moment due to job wind- down. By the end of the day I'm clicking refresh a lot as I seem to go through the threads at a rate of knots.

It depends..I usually skim over threads like this and when I've never heard of a poster I usually skip them...it took me a few weeks to get used to all the new posters instead of sticking to people i have seen since i came here. also it depends if they post to ilm frequently as if i read a thread there and i see their name a few times -when the post here i wont be reluctant to read what they say.
