This is really good for a pilot episode -- a bit draggy, don't think they needed the 1.5 hrs for the plot so much as just setting up the characters and dynamics a bit more.

Still, I could see running with this.

First half hour it seemed to be a bit too much like Monk, but otherwise it looks like it could be fun. I don't know how long they can stretch/rework this plot after a season or two though.

Hilarious Michael Jackson parody at the end though.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 8 July 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

the high-concept is obv. that the dude is the anti-monk -- all fun, gimmicks, confidence & womanizing. his partner could get a bit monkish tho, maybe?

the nice thing is that there's crazy room for character development with someone that shallow.

I'm more interested in seeing what they are going to do to keep the show plausible. These first episodes are always the easiest to write when you've got an interesting enough premise.

It may not have been just the show, but I found myself laughing out loud many times tonight. I will keep watching.

Which channel?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 9 July 2006 02:01 (nineteen years ago)

USA network, I missed it but surely they'll rerun it.

You can watch the whole pilot online at the usa homepage here.

i loved the cinematography, retrospectively, whose amateurish touch actually was a v. nice compliment to the whole "oh shit, in over our heads"ness of the plot and could actually move towards technical competence when so desired too. in its "cute" moments it reminded me sortof actually that fx show "its always sunny"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 9 July 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

the theme song sounds like buffalo tom.

Bill janovitz has done some TV music -- it's possible.

So I saw the first episode twice, and never saw the bit which they showed in the promo commercials -- "You call your fake psychic detective agency 'Psych'?!" -- and now they already appear to be in their office. What's up with that?

pleased to mitya (mitya), Saturday, 15 July 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

Promo was probably culled from the pilot, which don't always air.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Saturday, 15 July 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

Jessie!!

Actually, isn't that a different female cop from the first episode? I was actually just thinking that the shot the pilot/first episode and then changed the actress.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Saturday, 15 July 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

They also have a completely different young Sean.

It was the last scene of the pilot.

I'm wondering if she "didn't test well" in screenings but they probably shot the pilot months in advance and when they got picked up she wasn't available anymore.

Episodes 2 & 3 were decent, NBC are re-running them in August so says The Futon Critic.

I believe, from what I have seen, in each episode that they have a flashback, it is a different boy playing young shawn. I am not sure if this is supposed to be a running joke on the show, or if they are just trying to find the right actor for the role. I have tried to find a complete cast listing for each episode, but havent come up with anything yet.

Chief Vick, being named Kirsten Nelson, got a lot of misdirected tweets the other day.

tokyo rosemary, Friday, 19 January 2018 23:19 (eight years ago)

this is a show i never even knew existed until I heard about the Twin Peaks one. which I still haven't watched (nor have I watched the show)

akm, Friday, 19 January 2018 23:38 (eight years ago)

it'll take me a while to get to it but, given how.....incredibly silly this show is, i cannot wait to get to the twin peaks episode

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 19 January 2018 23:55 (eight years ago)

Only EP I've seen is the peaks one but it's a top tier homage

kolakube (Ross), Saturday, 20 January 2018 00:14 (eight years ago)

I've never watched Twin Peaks, and I liked that episode.

tokyo rosemary, Saturday, 20 January 2018 03:07 (eight years ago)

I love how they'll make a reference to some actor and then in the next season that actor will be a guest star.

tokyo rosemary, Saturday, 20 January 2018 03:09 (eight years ago)

I have only watched the Twin Peaks episode and the Clue episode but based on those I also want to watch the musical episode
