The Adam Sandler/Pauly Shore/Chris Farley Smackdown!

Don't ask me *why* I thought of this, but having done so I must now exorcise this image. So then -- ranking their Collective Movie Works together, who deserves praise (however grudging) and who deserves death?

Sandler = Shakes the Clown,Airheads,Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, The Waterboy, etc.

Shore = Encino Man, Bio-Dome, In the Army Now, Jury Duty, Son in Law, etc.

Farley = Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, Beverly Hills Ninja, Almost Heroes, etc.

Cruel jokes about the dead and brain-dead and all encouraged, assuming this thread actually gets anywhere.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It has to be Sandler all the way for Happy Gilmore alone - THE classic sports comedy. Example- Shooter: "I eat shit like you for breakfast" Happy: "You eat shit for breakfast?" Shooter: "No ..." , not to mention Carl Weathers prosthetic hand. This movie is movie gold. His other works may have failed to reach these dizziest of heights but for Happy alone he triumphs.

Disco Dave, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Chris Farely is not in their league. He is head and shoulders above.

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Regardless of the Sandler / Farley factions forming, can we ALL agree that Pauly Shore = Neidermeyer = DEAD.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Why don't we get any of this cool stuff in England?

tarden, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

death to them all - oh yeah, chris farley's already dead isn't he?

Geoff, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sandler: Airheads wuz shite (bad-bad script) but I liked The Wedding Singer. Lots of nice touches: the string quartet playing "Don't Stop Believin'," the Van Halen T-shirt joke, that's about it.

AP, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sandler != Shakes. Bobcat Goldthwait (dead?) = Shakes. Shakes = GRATE. Happy Gilmore = GRATE. Sandler "comedy albums" = dud. Sandler films = mixed bag. Shore = grate IN THEORY, dud in practice. Farley = occasionally brilliant. Farley + Spade = Classic. (why am I speaking in equations today?)

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Beverley Hills Ninja made me chuckle, Pauly Shore - isn't that an Ooberman song? - I'm not familiar with his work. Sandler kicks comedy butt. He is the new Chevy Chase and Happy Gilmore is absolute genius. Billy Madison is also good, especially all the stuff with the penguins. The waterboy was not his best but Big Daddy showed a return to form I thought.

Jonnie, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Who is Bobcat Goldthwait? I think he may be the guy from the Police Academy movies but I could be confusing him with someone else with a silly name.

Disco Dave, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Zed from the Police Academy movies. Police Academy movies are great but not as great as Happy Gilmore, natch.

pauly shore cause he so damn sexy

lauren purdy, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Happy Gilmore is so wonderful: "The price is WRONG, bitch". So, Adam Sandler wins out of those three, although I like the idea of movies with the word Ninja in the title.

Farley is god.

Bobcat Goldthwait (dead?)

Not dead, just very skinny in the sort of sunken-cheeks way that implies terminal disease. Plus on every talk show appearance he made after his sudden and ridiculously dramatic weight loss, I waited for the host to say, "Hey, you've really lost weight!" and none of them ever did, which leads me to believe the weight loss was not a good thing for Bobcat. On the other hand, if he had some sort of disease, don't you think he'd reveal it? I think the celebrities-with-AIDS stigma has been largely overcome (among anyone who'd like Bobcat, anyway), and I can't think of any other illnesses anyone would want to keep private.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Drug addiction, maybe?

Hey, Pauly Shore is really annoying and sometimes even obnoxious, and at the same time (yeah, I'm crazy) he's incredibly sexy! Pauly all the way. Definately.

Tina Schmidt, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I can't believe that anyone has admitted to liking Pauly Shore. Then again, how can I be surprised by anything on ILx after people admitted to liking Mick Jagger's "Let's Work"?

(Can't really understand actually liking Adam Sandler, either, though admitting to liking him doesn't seem quite so shameful as admitting to liking Pauly Shore.)

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Paul Shorley isn't funny because the confusing joke he made "fruit on the bottom or stirred"---explain me this.

I still can't believe Kylie's career recovered from starring in Biodome with him. She's still got PAULY COOTIES, people.

Yogurt, ho ho.

My current favorite phrase of the year. Don't ask me why.

I like how this thread has become a revenant, dragged back to life every so often for reasons unknown.

i understand the comic talents of all three above mentioned 'comedians', but none are superior to me. bud-dy Adam Sandler could never wiez the juice, its also apparent Chris Farley chomped on far to much grindage. So it is obvious that i am the crustiest. Now bring on the nugs.

O.K. I think I have just read the most stupid question ever! Do you even have to think about who is the funniest among the three? Hands down Pauly Shore! He has so much talent and really is the funniest person. I saw him live and never laughed harder. You go Pauly! Your awesome!

Too late, since those posts made me think, "Whatever he's on, I want some."

Still, this thread has more life than Pauly Shore's career. Quick, 10 seconds: Name Pauly's last funny movie, with a straight face.

(When Adam Sandler is considered Oscar material, then I'll know the world is coming to a swift end)
