I'm looking for recommendations for children's picture books (gifts for some friends' children), in the age range of 3-10. Looking for ones with great illustrations, tell an interesting story, and/or promote prosocial behavior or teach a lesson :), etc.
An excellent example of the kind of books I'm looking for would be "The Three Questions" by Jon J. Muth.
Serious responses please! :)

I am trying to track down the illustrated book on Greek myths that I had as a child. I don't know when this would have been published so it might be anywhere between 1975 - 1985 at the very latest. It was a larger format book that had hyper-realistic black and white pen and ink drawings of Greek gods and goddesses and various monsters and it relayed various mythological stories (Aphrodite and Mars, the Minotaur, the birth of Athena from Zeus' forehead, etc.). It wasn't done in that crayon/rough style of D'aulaire's, and it wasn't done in the lush Romantic manner of Walter Crane or Arthur Rackham either. I feel like these drawings were amazing (maybe good enough to have made the book a Caldecott finalist?) and I would love to see them again, but I don't know where to look and Amazon focuses (obviously enough) on things that are for sale now, and research libraries don't have this kind of thing either. Kinda stumped. Any suggestions for how to look for something like this?

a description of the cover, however vague, would really help too

It might be this:
http://www.amazon.com/Monsters-mythology-Michael-26-Jul-1977-Hardcover/dp/B012HTSGRU/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1452788313&sr=1-5&keywords=gods%2C+men+and+monsters+from+the+greek+myths+michael+gibson
Looking at that cover, I am pretty sure that I had that book. But I had lots and lots of books about Greek myths and that might be just one of them.

Possibly Mythology by Edith Hamilton:

or Stories of the Gods and Heroes by Sally Benson:

Both of these have b&w illustrations by Steele Savage who might be the person you're thinking of.

Savage's stuff looks pretty stylized, almost like woodcuts though

yeah Steele Savage's work is amazing and in its own lane, same goes for Willy Pogany, who rules but isn't the person I'm looking for either
