does any body have any ideas on how to stop morning sickness
or even to ease it a little the heart burn is murder

panda may (panda_may), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

Eat plain white French bread. My husband used to wake me up at 2 or 3 am to make me eat some so that my stomach wouldn't get so empty. This helped some. Also, if you're taking prenatal vitamins, you can try taking them at a different time of day. Another thing I tried was the anti-seasickness wrist bands that you can get at drugstores.

I never had heartburn, just tons of nausea and vomiting - and with my first, eating anything was a huge challenge until I was about 20 weeks pregnant.

Good luck!

My immediate, unconscious response would certainly earn me a place in the deepest levels of hell.

I think it's the same thing I thought of, and yes, we both are going to hell. :(

Pregnant as a dog?

I've been told everything from gatorade to gallons of water to pickle brine to greasy food. Wait, what are we curing again?

PREGNANCY.

Keep saltines by the bed - eat some before you get up in the morning. Take tums for the heartburn - they're calcium (double points!) and they help a LOT.

Ginger tea - or peppermint tea if like me you hate ginger - and plain snacks like crackers little and often. Some people reckon that morning sickness is due to low blood sugar (increased blood in pregnancy) so eating or drinking something sugary might help some people. I couldn't get enough strawberry jam personally, but others would heave at the thought of it.

Lucozade (the fizzy glucose drink) was the only thing which relieved the morning sickness for me (and 'morning' sickness is a bit of a misnomer, as I felt horribly nauseous all day long).

I swigged liquid Gaviscon to ease the heartburn.

how about "code red" - touch the temples of the head - hummm - stomp about - pretend one is in heaven

Oh poor thing. Morning sickness and reflux are the bitch. :-( Cookies helped. Keep some beside you in the bed.

Morning sickness 'regulates diet'

Morning sickness might have evolved to ensure pregnant women do not digest too much unhealthy food, say scientists. They found evidence that nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is associated with high intake of sugar, alcohol, oils and meat.

In contrast, cereals were least likely to trigger sickness.

Huh? Wtf is that for silliness. I ate plenty of unhealthy (fatty) foods. :-( Or maybe I just assume I did because I was *hyper aware* of what I ate? And my morning sickness *disappeared* after a few months.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah a lot of people I know who suffered from morning sickness were only able to relieve it by eating McDonalds and shit. Still, I like the idea that we have evolved to avoid listeria.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 07:56 (nineteen years ago)

I figured that since morning sickness doesn't kill anyone, it wouldn't be evolved out of our gene pool, regardless of its source... Anyway, I've never been pregnant and never will be, so I'm not sure what I can contribute here

how far along are you?

I didn't have morning sickness bad at all but the nausea was kept at bay by always having something in my stomach--I'd get sickest when I was hungriest, which was a bad place to be! Oatmeal with ginger made a good breakfast or late night snack.

as for heartburn, I have a bit of a sensitivity to wheat, so white bread would give me heartburn quicker than anything! See if there's any foods that really set you off, avoid those, and chomp the tums. Counterintuitively, a shot of vinegar can sometimes help! I guess the sudden rush of acidity shuts down your own acid production or something. Don't try this at the same time as the tums though.

With my second I went through a period of a few weeks where I couldn't stand to drink anything but extremely cold ice water - and even that grossed me out (finally started adding lemon or lime - because without that I could taste the minerals in the water). Milk grossed me out (I love milk), juice was too sweet... ugh. Actually, there was one other beverage that appealed - Coca-Cola! But obviously I couldn't drink much of that...

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

With my first, the smell of dairy products (even ice cream) sent me over the edge any time of the day, but I didn't have classic morning sickness. With the second, the thought of brushing my teeth would do me in before afternoon. Thankfully that went away in the 4th month. Theorizing it has anything to do with regulating the diet - bah. I'd bet it's more to do with those freakish pregnancy hormones dashing about.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Oh god, toothbrushing. I had to switch to kid's bubble gum flavored toothpaste because minty toothpaste made my mouth water and that led to hurling. NOT FUN!

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

The only thing that made me barf was apple juice - and normally I love it. Cooked green peppers didn't sit well, either, and I still can't stand the smell or taste of them, 9 years later.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 13 July 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

The only thing I couldn't stand: warm foods! WTF. I had laughed when our employee told me this, only to discover I suffered from the same!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 13 July 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

The salltines worked for me.
With my first I lost my desire for onions, garlic and black pepper. The onion/garlic love came back right away, but 25 years later I still don't grind pepper onto my food.
Funny thing is, the kid I was pregnant with when I had the queasiness can't stand spicy food. Did I do it to him, or did he do it to me— calling the shots from the womb?
The second prenancy I was less anxious over, drinking moderate amounts of wine and coffee, eating almost everything—and that kid is a very adventurous eater.
He just called me up to ask me for my salmon recipe.

I do not miss being a whale. Oh no. I was very happy to be pregnant, but I do not miss it. Does that make sense?
