has there been a thread on this? i couldn't find one. folgers is trying to get younger people to drink their beans. thus, the viral ad. or at least that's what i read in the business section of the paper. it is pretty wacky:

It's "wacky", which means not funny or interesting. Lock thread, delete ILX. Thank you.

oh my god I still remember that ad, my brothers looked at me like I was crazy when I pointed out how creepy it was, then I offered them some coffee

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 22:10 (seven years ago)

What is this wacky ad? Need a pick me up after the incest folgers ad and—upthread—-the emotional abuse folgers ad?

Trϵϵship, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 22:11 (seven years ago)

I think about the incest ad every Christmas and also frequently during the rest of the year

the best part of winter snow
is incest with your bro

Apparently there is a community of fan fiction based on this commercial https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/12/the-folgers-brother-sister-christmas-commercial-explained

“Folgers incest coffee” presumably a typo on the briefing for the ad agency

It was no doubt possible to edit that commercial in such a way that it came off as sweet and touching and heartfelt and respectful of familial norms. The editing decisions they went with, otoh, betray an intentional desire to go in a whole 'nother direction.

Frankly surprised neither party bit their lower lip at any point.

Right? It’s fascinating. Where did that energy come from on set? What were the alternate takes like?

moose; squirrel (silby), Thursday, 4 April 2019 00:04 (seven years ago)

Where did that energy come from? The editing suite, I think.

Its the otherwise unmotivated quick cuts at 0:29-0:30 above that mimic how furtive glances are cut together in romantic drama. If the wide 2-shot were held, it wouldn't have this complication.

I appreciate the restraint they showed in not having the sister stick the ribbon to her brother's crotch.

a valence of this commercial I hadn't yet considered, truly it is an urtext for understanding globalization and stepbrother porn

the best part of waking up
is two siblings one cup

rip van wanko, Thursday, 4 April 2019 21:09 (seven years ago)

put that in yr bunn and brew it

I get similar energy from Parenthood and This Is Us, though partly because I never know which characters are related, married, etc

say it with sausages (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 4 April 2019 22:55 (seven years ago)

See, I can't stand that commercial because it tries too hard to be a more contemporary update of the classic '80s Folgers commercial where Peter comes home from university and his enthusiastic little sister bounds down the stairs, before he brews a pot of coffee in order to surprise-welcome his parents. That was one of my favorite commercials as a little kid and one of my favorite commercials ever, and I wish they'd have just re-aired that commercial instead of trying to update it with that weird incestuous tension.

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Thursday, 4 April 2019 23:06 (seven years ago)

I think we can take it for granted that the brand geniuses at Folgers were not picking up on the incest zeitgeist in 2009 and trying to make money off it
