DUEL! 2002 - nominations wanted

Longtime FT readers will recall DUEL! - a knockout championship to decide the coveted title of Worst Band In The World. This feature will shortly be returning. Competition is sure to be tough but last time we left some obvious candidates out so this time we need nominations.

The criteria are that the band (or artist - solo artists are eligible) must have:

- been active during 2001, whether touring or releasing records. If they split up during 2001 but were active before the split that's OK too. - been covered seriously in the music press. Many local bands are incredibly bad but dont have the profile to compete in a feature like DUEL! This criteria used to exclude pop bands but such has been the colossal media impact of Freaky Trigger hem hem that the likes of Destiny's Child are now taken seriously and may well be eligible.

Nomination does not guarantee inclusion but when we get together in the pub next week and work out the shortlist we'll have a printed-off copy of this thread to hand. Thanks!

Other points:

i. 2000's final was between the Smashing Pumpkins and Travis.

ii. Yes this is all dreadfully Brutish.

iii. If your favourite bands are nominated don't worry - just think of all the fun you can have slipping little asides in your post about how much your tastes depart from the ILx 'party line'!

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Elbow, Feeder, Dandy Warhols, Mull Historical Society, Alien Ant Farm, Cooper Temple Clause. Thank you.

John Mc, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

CREED.

jess, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yeah, and Turin Brakes.

John Mc, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If we include Creed, the competition will be over before it started.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where precisely have Alien Ant Farm been covered seriously?

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You all know who I'm going to nominate so I won't even bother posting it.

DG, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Starsailor, Strokes, White Stripes, Manics, Nelly Furtado, Alicia Keyes

RickyT, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

starsailor and stereophonics.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gee whizz how did i forget Turin Brakes - the ghastly languid fog horn of a voice over turgid rock. How the F-ing did they get on TMMP shortlist ! Turin Brakes are awful.

Electric Soft Parade - stick 'em on that list as well.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

RICKY T is OTM ... seconded ...Strokes, White Stripes (especially for hotel yucky yelping yorbore

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Radiohead

(just so you don't forget to put them on the list)

chris, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can see the final draw now.. Creed Vs Stereophonics.

I think that early rounds should be split into countries, so the worst of each country, can then go forward to the later rounds.

Come on you Canadians and Aussies - lets have your worst bands.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cheers DJM, but I actually like one of the groups on that list. I just think they deserve to be in DUEL! as lots of people despise them and their presence might produce some good slaggings and/or defences.

RickyT, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DG - is your hated band The Stereophonics?

[I just can't believe that this is the top selling album in the UK at the mo]

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can I say Radiohead again? Ta.

chris, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We thought of having a group stage at one point.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Destiny's Child

the pinefox, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, crucial other FACT is that the draw for the first round of DUEL! 2002 will also be Fancy A Pint? IV and take place sometime in February.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It should be noted that inclusion on the following list doesn't imply dislike for the band:
Tool, Gorillaz, POD, Sum 41, Faith Evans, Hear'Say, Atomic Kitten, The Strokes, Starsailor, Kylie Minogue, 'NSync.

(NOTE: previous disclaimer applies only to Tool.)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

coldplay, cosmic rough riders. actually just cosmic rough riders. i don't often say puh-leeeese but puh-leeeeeeese!

katie, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

because this is a world cup year, you should have a round where the bands are in a group and all duel with each other in turn, and the worst bands from each group go on to the knockout phase.

DV, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Primal Scream. Death in Vegas. High Llamas. Starsailor. Ryam Adams. All other active American bands of all genres.

Dr. C, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Flaming Nora! How could I have forgotten Gorillaz?

RickyT, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would have thought by now DJM that every IL*er knows that for me "shit" and "The Strokes" are totally interchangable. Not literally of course, that would be horrible.

DG, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One of the nominations, must be Drowningpool - I suppose not many Brits know this band yet, but they must rank as the most gormless Nu Metal band so far - one of their songs goes like this. [in a gormless spoken yank accent. let the bodies hit the floor..GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA..]

Music for the teenage male with an IQ below 90.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well for me of course "Gorillaz" and "shit" are closely related!

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

just to go with Radiohead, can we have POD too? and no I don't mean Power of Dreams.

and Radiohead, and Primal scream.......

chris, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How come I am the only one to mention Travis - come on that "sing" song is actual aural torture in shops or on the radio.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"sing" - great rhyme scheme though eh?

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The most infuriating thing about Puddle Of Mudd is that the singer's teeth are all the same large size. I detest that kind of grille like a SICKNESS. It just makes me think of aging skateboarders with no eyebrows that stink of peanut butter.

Oh yes, my nomination: NICKELBACK. (I think this guy's got the teeth thing too but I've never watched the video for more than 5 seconds.)

Ramosi, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tompaulin

RickyT, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...my life at the movies (it woz rather naff in an indie pop singalong way) but I don't think it merits a nomination.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

RickyT only sa Tompaulin to get back at me for calling him a GOFF.

clearly the beahviour of a dyed in the wool (or crushed velvet, heheh) GOFF!!

katie, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Electric Soft Parade definitely. Their new single makes me want to go out and burn my copy of Empty At The End, which before was perfectly harmless.

Graham, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah Graham ! mentions Electric Soft Parade .. i have said this before but the vocals on the single silence in the mind?[or something like that] sounds like a whining cat being stepped on over the worst 90s britpop/dadrock. [add to the fact of the most clueless and hideous review of their debut album in this week's NME]

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Andrew WK, Haven, Zero 7, if we can have pop then Robbie Williams and David Gray, The Music, Doves, Train, Elbow, Ryan Adams, Cooper Temple Clause...

And I think I also hate every band mentioned in all the above posts (except Moldy Peaches). Grrr. I am full of hate. Fear me.

emil.y, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and I don't hate Micktravis either. But I do despise Travis.

emil.y, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

as long as we're picking on 'music for the teenage male with an IQ below 90' perhaps you could fill this small barrel here with some trout and fire a shotgun at them.

ethan, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also if the strokes win i will be furious.

ethan, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Smashing Pumpkins? Worst band in the world? What strange alternative universe have I stunbled upon?? *checks to see if the air is breathable*

My nomination: Muse

jel, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So Solid Crew. We live in hope that one of their gun-toting fanbase has a discerning ear and is facing stagewards when trigger finger slips.

Wilfred the Beagle, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can the Gorillaz really be nominated? aren't they just a 'concept' group in a post-modernist damon 'i'm so bloody clever, me' albarn way?? [plus like their bonus tracks explicit lyrics cd version a worrying amount][sorry].

Wilfred the Beagle, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

U2 must be included.

dan, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a) Of course Gorrillaz can be included. And the odds will be very low on them winning too.
b) U2 were one of the bands disallowed last time because they would be too easy. I think their time should now come.

Pete, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also last time they hadn't released anything for AGES whereas now the wounds are fresh.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm gonna get called a mentalist but anyway:

Basment Jaxx.

jel, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

U2 must be included.

Game Over.

N., Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

either you include U2 or we slowly pick off Bono's celebrity scumfriends one by one.

starting with JD Salinger. if he isnt dead already.

Wyndham Earl, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah U2...that "beautiful day" song + the priemership on ITV = case closed. No need for a duel.

jel, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is what was said about Stereophonics last time and they didn't win.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tompaulin, Cornelius, Cooper Temple Clause, Starsailor.

Brian Tuker, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chris, you are going to die (this is, however, unfortunately just inevitable and therefore not actually threatening).

Melissa W, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NB the inclusion of a band in Duel! is not neccessarily a reflection of their badness. It is entirely possible that they will go out in round 1 (or the group stage though if I agree to this I am a mentalist) with a meagre number of votes.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If Radiohead are nominated I will stage a revolt! Actually I'll just complain a lot.

Melissa W, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jamiroquai.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Obviously Radiohead are in. They are an incredibly prominent band, taken seriously by everyone and loathed by a remarkable number of people. Last time they went out against someone peasy though.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Melissa W, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mel - how d'ya do that?

U2 are REVOLTINGLY smug and less and less good. Are we even bothering with stuff like Atomic Kitten/a1/Steps(RIP) et al?

Wilfred the Beagle, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Look wot you gone and done now, Tom.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

U2, Paul McCartney -for his 9/11 shite tribute song, Train, Radiohead, The Strokes

kevin enas, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Atomic Kitten and A1 aren't generally taken seriously. Nor are Steps though more so than AK/A1 I intuit. I doubt anyone would seriously prefer most of the bands mentioned to them, anyhow.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dj Martin - Drowning Pool is my guilty pleasure..classic for driving, screaming along to etc.

kevin enas, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would have to say: Paul McCartney, George Harrison, The Eels, Hear'Say, DJ Pied Piper and Tompaulin - they all win the half man half biscuit award for 2002!

D.H., Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I second Train. I saw their damn video about 15 times on the big screen at the status quo/ beach boys show.

jel, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

spiritualized made a racous racket on Jools Holland last year and their new song has been played a lot on Radio 2 (as has the new Super Furry Animals' offering) thus making them contenders esp. as in smug "we are artistes and serious muso's" group along with Bono 'Head Irretrievably Up Own Bottom' Bono.

Paul McCartney is also smug and crrrrrrrrrap. Anyone else hear the rumours about him and Lennon mugging sailors when poor in Hamburg? I pissed myself. Nearly as good as George Harrison attempting GBH on Yoko for stealing his choclate biscuits during the 'Let It Be' sessions. Not so meditatively calm then Mr. Indian-Spiritual-Guru. I have veered wildly off the point. Please don't include GH - 'Something' one of the finest ballads ever.

Wilfred the Beagle, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Incidentally while the nomination criteria for Duel! includes recognition of the gap between percieved acclaim and perceived quality, the judging criteria should be based on the music. Or actually, fuck it, on whim.

There might be a pop Duel!

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick Cave (with or without the Bad Seeds) - highly acclaimed, brilliant novel writer (And The Ass Saw The Angel) but voice like a fog-horn with laryngitis. Bollocks - he hasn't abused the airwaves recently has he? Torn between him creating more god-awful noise so can be nominated next year and hope that he never sings again, ever.

And if Hear'Say why not Steps? Actually - no one acclaims either without being deeply ironic/pretentious/in need of interesting tablets point taken Cap'n.

Wilfred the Beagle, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hear'Say actually have got some very serious acclaim on these boards - as have Steps though less prominently. But we're not counting ILM as part of the mainstream music press.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Moldy fucking Peaches. Starsailor.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom-mouse asked - Where precisely have Alien Ant Farm been covered seriously?

the fuckwits Alien Ant Farm are on the front cover of Brit music monthly Rock Sound

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Reminder for the American's there is a large percentage of crap in the Gavin Alternative Airplay Charts for 2001 us Brits are thankfully deprived of the likes of Lifehouse, Fuel and 3 Doors Down - on the radio.

Also thankfully Matchbox 20 don't get played on London's Xfm these days. Another yanky band that are uber naff trad rockist crap Vertical Horizon - but I don't think they released any new music in 2001.

and remember Maura's naff local modern rock station has a playlist made up of total crap Mix 95.7

and who the fuck are Five For Fighting?

any American nominations for the Dave Matthews Band, Staind?

What about Crazy "cunting" Town - that butterfly single was early 2001, but no one except moronic teenagers took them seriously - so maybe that rules them out.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey I just noticed that the naff Brit rock station Virgin Radio in the UK has a playlist remarkably like that of the Mix 95.7's.

Tom, take a look at Virgin Radio's website - to firm up the nominations list.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will Tanya Headon of IHM fame - be contributing to the nominations list? And which bands?

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Crazy Town are ruled out because they're GRATE.

Tanya will not be contributing. In the World Cup, you can't support all the teams.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

George Harrison ought to be fair game. since has being dead been an excuse for being crap.

Wyndham Earl, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if julie burchill in marie claire counts, hear'say have had powerful intellectual acclaim beyond the borders of me myself and i (although frankly i think JB must have just cut and pasted me leaving out the subtle bits)

ryan adams?

mark s, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Could there be a proper, mass duel between So' Solid Crew and Belle and Sebastian (with their full string and horn sections natch)?

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that I would dearly love to witness.

Wilfred the Beagle, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe we should try and put it on then. The world is itching for an epic gladitorial contest following the demise of the Lewis/Tyson fight.

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

leave it Daniels! and YAY! for Radiohead being a shoe-in

(Sorry Melissa)

and crazy town should be in there too.

chris, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely David Kitt has to be in there - crap singer songwriter, in the even worse than David Gray mould. Innovative - my @rse. Crappy acoustic guitar, badly programmed drum machine and rubbish lyrics (almost Travis-like in their banality).

Seth Speirs, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, but the red flashing light that traverses his torso is da bomb.

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well there is already a real life FITE between S Club 7 and a member of Tompaulin to finally get decided.

Pete, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So Solid vs B&S (US version): Wu-Tang Vs Lambchop.

Riot!

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wu-Tang vs So solid, can you imagine??? I would pay more than a pound to see that.

chris, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That would be like the martial arts programme on BBC2! I can see RZA and Megaman having the deciding bout. Obviously RZA would win, probably by using MAGIC.

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When will the Belle and Sebastian beat em up game "Belle and Sebastian - Taste the Whimsy" be out then?

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The White Stripes in 'not even as good as Jon Spencer' shocka.

Andrew L, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jon Spencer isn't as good as Jon Spencer.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
