The criteria are that the band (or artist - solo artists are eligible) must have:
- been active during 2001, whether touring or releasing records. If they split up during 2001 but were active before the split that's OK too. - been covered seriously in the music press. Many local bands are incredibly bad but dont have the profile to compete in a feature like DUEL! This criteria used to exclude pop bands but such has been the colossal media impact of Freaky Trigger hem hem that the likes of Destiny's Child are now taken seriously and may well be eligible.
Nomination does not guarantee inclusion but when we get together in the pub next week and work out the shortlist we'll have a printed-off copy of this thread to hand. Thanks!

i. 2000's final was between the Smashing Pumpkins and Travis.
ii. Yes this is all dreadfully Brutish.
iii. If your favourite bands are nominated don't worry - just think of all the fun you can have slipping little asides in your post about how much your tastes depart from the ILx 'party line'!

Electric Soft Parade - stick 'em on that list as well.
(just so you don't forget to put them on the list)
I think that early rounds should be split into countries, so the worst of each country, can then go forward to the later rounds.
Come on you Canadians and Aussies - lets have your worst bands.
[I just can't believe that this is the top selling album in the UK at the mo]

U2 are REVOLTINGLY smug and less and less good. Are we even bothering with stuff like Atomic Kitten/a1/Steps(RIP) et al?

Paul McCartney is also smug and crrrrrrrrrap. Anyone else hear the rumours about him and Lennon mugging sailors when poor in Hamburg? I pissed myself. Nearly as good as George Harrison attempting GBH on Yoko for stealing his choclate biscuits during the 'Let It Be' sessions. Not so meditatively calm then Mr. Indian-Spiritual-Guru. I have veered wildly off the point. Please don't include GH - 'Something' one of the finest ballads ever.
There might be a pop Duel!
And if Hear'Say why not Steps? Actually - no one acclaims either without being deeply ironic/pretentious/in need of interesting tablets point taken Cap'n.

the fuckwits Alien Ant Farm are on the front cover of Brit music monthly Rock Sound
Also thankfully Matchbox 20 don't get played on London's Xfm these days. Another yanky band that are uber naff trad rockist crap Vertical Horizon - but I don't think they released any new music in 2001.
and remember Maura's naff local modern rock station has a playlist made up of total crap Mix 95.7
and who the fuck are Five For Fighting?
any American nominations for the Dave Matthews Band, Staind?
What about Crazy "cunting" Town - that butterfly single was early 2001, but no one except moronic teenagers took them seriously - so maybe that rules them out.
Tom, take a look at Virgin Radio's website - to firm up the nominations list.
Tanya will not be contributing. In the World Cup, you can't support all the teams.
