DUEL! 2002 - nominations wanted

Longtime FT readers will recall DUEL! - a knockout championship to decide the coveted title of Worst Band In The World. This feature will shortly be returning. Competition is sure to be tough but last time we left some obvious candidates out so this time we need nominations.

The criteria are that the band (or artist - solo artists are eligible) must have:

- been active during 2001, whether touring or releasing records. If they split up during 2001 but were active before the split that's OK too. - been covered seriously in the music press. Many local bands are incredibly bad but dont have the profile to compete in a feature like DUEL! This criteria used to exclude pop bands but such has been the colossal media impact of Freaky Trigger hem hem that the likes of Destiny's Child are now taken seriously and may well be eligible.

Nomination does not guarantee inclusion but when we get together in the pub next week and work out the shortlist we'll have a printed-off copy of this thread to hand. Thanks!

The most infuriating thing about Puddle Of Mudd is that the singer's teeth are all the same large size. I detest that kind of grille like a SICKNESS. It just makes me think of aging skateboarders with no eyebrows that stink of peanut butter.

spiritualized made a racous racket on Jools Holland last year and their new song has been played a lot on Radio 2 (as has the new Super Furry Animals' offering) thus making them contenders esp. as in smug "we are artistes and serious muso's" group along with Bono 'Head Irretrievably Up Own Bottom' Bono.

Paul McCartney is also smug and crrrrrrrrrap. Anyone else hear the rumours about him and Lennon mugging sailors when poor in Hamburg? I pissed myself. Incidentally while the nomination criteria for Duel! includes recognition of the gap between percieved acclaim and perceived quality, the judging criteria should be based on the music. Or actually, fuck it, on whim.

Nick Cave (with or without the Bad Seeds) - highly acclaimed, brilliant novel writer (And The Ass Saw The Angel) but voice like a fog-horn with laryngitis. Bollocks - he hasn't abused the airwaves recently has he? Torn between him creating more god-awful noise so can be nominated next year and hope that he never sings again, ever.

And if Hear'Say why not Steps? Actually - no one acclaims either without being deeply ironic/pretentious/in need of interesting tablets point taken Cap'n.

Reminder for the American's there is a large percentage of crap in the Gavin Alternative Airplay Charts for 2001 us Brits are thankfully deprived of the likes of Lifehouse, Fuel and 3 Doors Down - on the radio.

Also thankfully Matchbox 20 don't get played on London's Xfm these days. Another yanky band that are uber naff trad rockist crap Vertical Horizon - but I don't think they released any new music in 2001.
