disgusting (but feel the need to tell someone)

This morning I couldn't breathe through my left nostril even though they're clearing a little since I had a sinus operation last week.

Anyway I decided to chance a sneeze, cos it's been a week since the op, and the largest snot I have ever seen exploded onto the tissue. I then had to sensitively tease it out. It was the size of a small goldfish, I'm still not convinced it wasn't part of my nose that they removed during the operation.

I know this is horrible but my nose feels so much better. And all day I've wanted to tell someone but if I don't post it here it'll be someone IRL.

I was going to take a photo on my phone, but decided this would be going too far.

speaking of nasal issues, why am i only now discovering the brilliance of saline nasal flushes? why didn't anyone tell me sooner? simply saline = the best thing evar

― ai lien (kold_krush), Thursday, 27 July 2006 13:48 (twenty years ago)

congratulations. And thanks for the new euphamism for having to blow out a really big snot: "Pardon me, I have to go tease a goldfish."

Two of the greatest, most satisfying things in the world are expelling an enormous lump of snot from your nose, and taking a really big dump.

― C J (C J), Thursday, 27 July 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh no, Ronan, this kind of stuff is AWESOME. I've gone on record before as a spot-picker and hair-tweezer, you can imagine how much I LOVE all things purgative.

― Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 27 July 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

I feel relieved. Thank you!!!

My sister loves to regale people with the tale of the HUGE GLOB OF EARWAX that was splooged out of her ear by a doctor after she'd done the course of wax-softening drops.

― Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 27 July 2006 13:58 (twenty years ago)

You should have seen the huge black SLUG of earwax that the doctor syringed out of my ear when I was 19

― Sploshette Moxy (Dada), Thursday, 27 July 2006 13:59 (twenty years ago)

After I came home from the hospital where I delivered Ophelia, I lost a gigantic piece of bloodcloth! It was the fucking weirdest feeling and when I caught it, I freaked out thinking I had lost a piece of my womb or something. I really thought I was going to die. It fit in my hand. My husband said it looked like a piece of liver.

The way you describe it, Ronan, seems like some sort of orgasm. heh

― C J (C J), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Is bloodcloth placenta, Nathalie? Shouldn't the obstetrician have checked it out to make sure it was all there when you delivered the bulk of it?

Was the stick inside the person's ear, too?

― Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Do you honestly think that ILXORs are the kind of people who keep samples of their bodily excretions stored in a freezer for posterity??

Oh, wait ....

Do you honestly think that ILXORs are the kind of people who keep samples of their bodily excretions stored in a freezer for posterity??

Oh, wait ....

xpost to Beth : yes, I think the stick came out of the ear too, and I've been puzzling about that for ages.

― C J (C J), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:15 (twenty years ago)

No, up his bum.

Uh, they told me that I would still lose bloodcloths. But I didn't realize it would be THAT big. I bled quite profusely before, during and after the delivery. They had to give me two bags of blood.

I'd like to apologise for claiming all this time that CJ was a woman. As Matt DC says, she is clearly a man. Sorry for misleading you all.

(x-post - bloodCLOTS, Nath)

― Earwig oh! (Mark C), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:19 (twenty years ago)

No, no, no. I am a woman who knows the feeling of satisfaction.

― C J (C J), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:25 (twenty years ago)

I threw it away before pics could be taken, after examining it and considering taking a pic. It had a strange texture, a bit like white fish (to continue the maritime theme). And a red bloody head!

It was visible at my nostril, ugh, since Monday, hence I had to hide it when leaving the house and was told my the specialist not to blow my nose until a week after, or tamper with it. But it was loose enough this morning I said I had to get rid of it. But yeah, it went from my nostil way back up my nose, I'd say a scissors might have had trouble cutting it in two across the middle.

― Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 July 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Bloodcloth sounds slightly nicer though. Slightly.

― Archel (Archel), Thursday, 27 July 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm just wondering whether CJ is talking about doing that simultaneously.

― M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 27 July 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

that is so awesomely gross, ronan. esp the scissors part.

that and the earwax pic have made my mouth feel kind of metallic now.

― rrrobyn sharkattack battleforcenet (rrrobyn), Thursday, 27 July 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Were you, at any point in before throwing it away, tempted to put it in your mouth for even a fraction of a second?

More importantly, what if it was the only thing supporting the bridge of your nose and it collapses in on itself, Tara Palmer-Tompkinson style?

― Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 July 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

what really made me squeamish for a sec was that i thought that "stick" was the hammer/anvil bones of the guy's inner ear.

Ronan I've had one of these before! Not as big as a fish though blimx0r - but I had mad sinus problems for almost a year and never had any surgery; then one day I had to get on a plane so I necked some sudafed to try and clear up my head (so my ears wouldnt go crap), and I blew my nose really hard and I felt this.... SCHHHLLLUPP! from wayyy up in my sinus cavity and out came this white, chick-pea sized clump. It was hard, almost like cartiledge. And BOY OH BOY did that make things better, I could breathe after that!

I dont know what it was, I assumed it might have been a polyp though. COuld yours have been similar (though wouldnt they have removed something like that in the op?)? Or maybe it was a leftover wad of surgical padding?

― Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 27 July 2006 23:23 (twenty years ago)

THIS IS AWESOME

ALSO RONAN DUDE I AM SO GLAD U FEEL BETTER

Similar satisfaction: when you can feel a wad of congestion drying just above/behind the roof of your mouth and you FINALLY get it loose. Grosser, because it does pass through your mouth (and then you SPIT, most likely) but ahhhhh the free and clear feeling afterward!

I have this syndrome too! It sometimes comes out very solid, like a snot-scab, and takes lots of energetic hawking to dislodge it. Snarfing warm salt water up your nose helps. What they call "nasal lavage."

I am actually eating oatmeal as I read this thread.

― Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:43 (twenty years ago)

*puts sandwich back in wrapper and goes back to work*

Thanks for helping me watch my weight, ILX!

― StanM (StanM), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:52 (twenty years ago)

OK I'll weigh in here with the kind of concentrated snotlump/LUNG COOKIE with a crust of fuck knows what which you practically choke on as it comes to the surface of the mouth, which heralds the beginning of a good and proper headcold.

Ronan, is it possible that the docs left a bit of cotton or bandage up there and this was incorporated into your erm snot goldfish?

― suzy (suzy), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:54 (twenty years ago)

perhaps a smurf was caught in his nose

― Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:55 (twenty years ago)

suggested name: Moco De Ronan

(based on this)

― StanM (StanM), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:57 (twenty years ago)

I am pretty sure it wasn't a bandage or bit of cotton. I do think it's possible it was part skin though, the op was basically alot of reducing of the lining of my nose and entrance to my sinuses.

The specialist did say earlier this week, when removing the splint, with a sort of magical wonder tone in his voice "hmm, I must say, your mucus is REALLY sticky!".

A window into the life of Ear Nose Throat physicians.

I'm not better yet btw, still feel pretty shit, it's a bit hard to tell cos your nose stays swollen after the op for a while, but I am really hoping it clears soon, so I can have a proper sleep.

And to answer Matt's question, yes I did kinda feel like putting it in my mouth, even now if I think about it that idea seems strangely compelling.
