Does anyone know why this happened and how to fix it?

Right-click on your desktop and select "flag 3dbox box thicklyoutlinedbox msign 3dbox diamond otherthing msign" then select the tab that says "peacesign thicklyoutlinedbox thicklyoutlinedbox msign cancer 3dbox cancer filledsquare alteredmsign msign" then the button that says "peacesign libra 4H cancer filledsquare alteredmsign msign libra" and make sure that the "rightpointingfinger thicklyoutlinedbox filledsquare diamond" isn't on Wingdings.

You should change it to webdings. The one with the huge Zardoz style head is the best fontette ever.

The only time I've seen something like this is when there's been a conflict between the operating system language (e.g., loading a computer full of Russian programs and files when it's not actually equipped for Russian). Somehow, though, I don't imagine that's your problem.

I did a full virus scan and found nothing, but I'm guessing it was caused by a virus. It appears that there are no fonts in the fonts folder in the the control panel. wtf.

Weird! Font-theft! Do a search. Maybe they got themselves lost in the system. I was losing songs out of iTunes and had to do searches for them, drag them back where they belonged, the brats.
