kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

It's the one in New York. *is killed*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

Completely classic.

More serious answer: It's the one with all the singing. And Liza Minelli. It kinda sticks out.

I have the sdtk for some reason (a holdover from the ma-in-law's collection?), but have never seen the movie

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

i remember learning that the song "new york, new york" was written in 1977 and that fact completely blowing my mind.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

that sort of makes sense, it sounds like later period blowsy over the top throwback shit

gear: totally, in retrospect... but i'd grown up thinking it was an old standard!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

of course the reason i knew it at all when i was growing was probably because it was a current hit at the time!

Whoa. I had no idea.

Yeah, see, and my dad used to sing it all the time when I was growing up.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

professionally?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

that makes sense, it was so ubiquitous when i was a kid. that and 'my kind of town'. when was that one written?

i think those two tunes made me underrate sinatra for years : (

gear (gear), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

haha i thought "ny, ny" was an old song when i was a kid too. popeye>>ny,ny>>>>>>>>>>one from the heart>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>at long last love

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, no, just as part of the repertoire of songs he sang around the house. Also see: "There's a Boat That's Leaving Soon for New York," "They Call the Wind Mariah," "Honky Cat," and "Pow Wow the Indian Boy."

I'm almost halfway through it. Liza is surprisingly restrained and pretty good; Scorsese directs De Niro to act all Methody and Travis Bickle-ish in deliberately artificial recreations of '40s musical numbers. This piling of affectation atop affectation is most painful.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

screening in New Haven at the end of August

The first Scorsese film I ever saw (Franklin Theater, Nutley NJ, summer '77).

It's neither classic nor dud, but (tho I like it more) analogous to Spielberg's 1941 -- an overstuffed period piece made by a movie nut. All those extras in that opening V-J Day sequence! Also Liza's most interesting film perf after Cabaret (and clearly a semi-homage to her mom's '40s roles). And you really don't see many musicals where the 'hero' slaps around his pregnant wife in the back of a cab.

The restored uncut version is a loooooong sit, but I like the scene where Lionel Stander and de Niro basically say "Huh? What?" for two full minutes.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 August 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

The wife and I have resumed working our way through the Scorsese library. This is one I haven't seen before but I've always been perversely fascinated by the concept.

Anyone know if Italian-American ever made it to DVD?

Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure all his shorts have, yeah.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

I screened the uncut – a long slog. De Niro's exchanges with bandleaders and cabbies were like a rehearsal for his oafish bits in Raging Bull. I was suprised by how affecting Minnelli was without getting tremulous and dewy.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

Jake LaMotta Plays the Sax! Nice little part for Dick Miller too.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure all his shorts have, yeah.

Is it buried away as an extra on something? Cause I'm coming up with nothing....
