my own, meagre, unresearched answer was going to be colfax ave in denver, which is 26 miles, i think?

-- (688), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

and...broadway of course

-- (688), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

Broadway is called different things as it goes upstate and becomes Route 9. The problem with American roads is they can get numbered without even having names.

I'm pretty sure it's Western Avenue, which goes from Albany to... errr... Ohio? without a name change.

I'm On The Radio So I Don't Care!!!1! (kate), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:38 (nineteen years ago)

colfax is the correct answer... sunset is actually 22, which is still close.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highway_1_%28Australia%29

Highway 1 is Australia's coastal highway joining all mainland's state capitals and coastal towns circumnavigating the entire Australian continent. At the total length of more than 20,000 kilometres, it is the longest national highway in the world.

highways don't count. all highways are long.

Yeah, accepted.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

and the transcanada goes from vancouver to halifax, which is longer then 20k km isnt it

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

Dammit, I am trying to find a map that shows me Western Ave going from Albany all the way to Rochester, but it keeps trying to get me to take the I-90 instead. I know that's quicker! I don't want quicker! I want longer! I want Western Ave!

I'm On The Radio So I Don't Care!!!1! (kate), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:25 (nineteen years ago)

re broadway:

roadway runs the length of Manhattan, being the only street running from almost the southern tip of the island, at Bowling Green, to the northern tip. South of Columbus Circle, it is a one-way street with all vehicle traffic traveling southbound. It crosses Spuyten Duyvil Creek via the Broadway Bridge and continues through the Bronx to Westchester County.

Broadway continues running through several Hudson River towns as U.S. Route 9, before becoming the "New York-Albany Post Road," and running through the state capital, Albany, terminating in Champlain, New York at the Canadian border.

rudy huxtable can't fail (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

Exactly. It's called Route 9 through much of Upstate NY. And it's called The Post Road in Albany. That's not exactly the same name, is it?

Western Avenue (even though it's also known as Route 20) is Western Avenue all the way out.

I'm On The Radio So I Don't Care!!!1! (kate), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

according to both googlemaps and yahoomaps, western avenue becomes western turnpike just west of albany, then i kind of lose it altogether in esperance, ny

-- (688), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

Bah, stupid Schenectady County - I forgot that it becomes Western Turnpike at Duanesburg. Oops - Esperance. :-(

I'm On The Radio So I Don't Care!!!1! (kate), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

It seems very like an English road, in that it becomes "Main Street" in whatever it goes through. (Equiv of "High Street" US style.)

I'm On The Radio So I Don't Care!!!1! (kate), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

Route 9 is called a million different things on its route - especially considering where it splits off into 9, 9W, 9G, 9J and whatever else.

I'm On The Radio So I Don't Care!!!1! (kate), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

broadway from battery park to tarrytown (where it becomes the albany post road) is 33.62 miles, but it becomes "north broadway" and "south broadway" several times over in the interim, as well as Rte. 9.

rudy huxtable can't fail (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Telegraph Road in Metro Detroit/SE Michigan?

Jeff Wright (JeffW1858), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

Sepulveda is the longest street in LA, its wiki page says over 30 miles (tho the disambiguity page says over 60 mi).

Sepulveda

Western Avenue in Chicago is 28 miles from north to south.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

(It turns into Asbury St. once it hits Evanston to the north, and it becomes Dixie Highway after it crosses Sibley Blvd. to the south.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

(The 28 miles is just when it's called Western, though.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

at 31.7, sepulveda is looking good, right now

-- (688), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

I was always told this was whatever road it is that Sheridan turns into up through the north shore of Chicago -- though that might not be "continually named," as it has some kind of official route number but also average street-type names as it goes along.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

Jaymc, do you have any idea what that particular piece of trivia was?

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Why isn't the answer Interstate 20?

Damn, Atreyu! (x Jeremy), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

Some googled-up page tells me Toronto's Yonge Street travels for 1,178 miles, making it the longest road in the world. No idea on the "continually named" bit, but I'm not actually sure I understand that designation. I mean, lots of roads have two designations, a kind of local/original name and an overarching superstructure name -- how big does the superstructure have to be for it not to count? Anything less than Route 66?

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

i meant continuously, not continually.

i think i mean, it has to be a named road, rather than a numbered road

yonge st is absolute nonsense. i read that it was 1100+ miles long, but if you go and look on google, it changes its name almost as soon as it leaves toronto

-- (688), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

what i really meant was,

nabisco not otm

El Camino Real?

Not sure if that counts.

schwantz (schwantz), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Without googling, I'm pretty sure Mulholland is longer than Sepulveda or Sunset (which is technically a highway JBR!).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/91/Mulholland_Drive.png/800px-Mulholland_Drive.png

Mulholland Drive looks like it's about 30+ miles, if you include Mulholland Way it's like 70-80 miles.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

good long range effort from man like shasta

lamountains.com says mulholland drive is 24 miles, and mulholland avenue 30 miles

-- (688), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

oopsie, i mean highway, not avenue

-- (688), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

Mulholland doesn't qualify because for part of it's length between the 405 and Topanga, it's unpaved and closed to vehicles.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

I was always told this was whatever road it is that Sheridan turns into up through the north shore of Chicago -- though that might not be "continually named," as it has some kind of official route number but also average street-type names as it goes along.

So I just looked into this, and "Sheridan Road" is a major lakefront artery, extending all the way from the north side of Chicago to Kenosha, about 60 miles north. But this is not the same Sheridan Road the whole way. Not only is the name changed a couple times along the way (Genesee Road in Waukegan, for instance), it also breaks up a few times -- there's a weird point where it tapers off and then a different road a few blocks over picks up the name. As a continuously named street, it only goes up to Highland Park, which is maybe 15 miles.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

it's unpaved and closed to vehicles.

Very LA-ist mentality!

;-)

jaymc or other chicago people: how long is ogden called ogden? i know it starts in chicago and is called ogden at least until aurora, which is, what 30-35 miles.

Ogden Ave becomes Chicago Ave in Oswego, roughly 35 miles from where it begins in Chicago.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 4 August 2006 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

OK, if I ask Google Maps for directions from either end of Telegraph
Road (north end at Walton in Pontiac, south end at Alexis in Toledo) it comes back with 82 miles and change, but it routes me up I-275/I-696, etc. for part of the trip. Someone more proficient than I will have to tell me the actual distance, but figure it at at least 75 miles.

Jeff Wright (JeffW1858), Friday, 4 August 2006 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

I was going to say western ave. in l.a., and was close, but i was wrong:

Western Avenue is a major four lane street slightly west of Downtown Los Angeles and the center portion of Los Angeles County. Besides Sepulveda Boulevard, it is the longest north/south street in Los Angeles.

Western Avenue passes an incredible diversity of neighborhoods, ranging from the wealthiest and most economically depressed in Los Angeles. It begins near the Pacific Ocean in the exclusive community of Palos Verdes Estates. It swerves to the east and passes north through Lomita, Torrance, Gardena, Inglewood, Baldwin Hills, and South Los Angeles.

Around Pico Boulevard, Olympic Boulevard, and Wilshire Boulevard, Western Avenue passes through the neighborhood of Koreatown. Further north, Western Avenue passes through the eastern portions of Hollywood.

Western Avenue eventually ends north of Franklin Avenue in the Hollywood Hills. It swerves to become an east/west street, Los Feliz Boulevard, a major thoroughfare for Los Feliz.

yonge st is absolute nonsense. i read that it was 1100+ miles long, but if you go and look on google, it changes its name almost as soon as it leaves toronto

It's designated as Highway 11 in Toronto as well. But its Yonge street through and through to at least north of Barrie. For the record Avenue Rd is 11A. The province takes responsibility of maintenance for highways, as opposed to the cities of Barrie, Innisfil, East Gwillimbury, Newmarket, Aurora, Richmond Hill, Markham, Vaughan and Toronto.

I was about to mention Yonge St. in Toronto... I drove a part of that to try to get to 401 from the start of it, and it took forever.. and that was just a sliver of it.

It's designated as Highway 11 in Toronto as well. But its Yonge street through and through to at least north of Barrie

well, apart from when it becomes bridge st, in bradford

-- (688), Sunday, 6 August 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

and then barrie st, before it becomes yonge st again

-- (688), Sunday, 6 August 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

and then of course, in barrie itself, it then becomes bradford st

-- (688), Sunday, 6 August 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

before becoming blake st

-- (688), Sunday, 6 August 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)
