FX sitcom about schlubs in Philly that own / run a bar. Hilarious hijinks ensue re: picking up girls at abortion rallies, rigging pee-wee basketball games, turning a comptroller race into a corruption-ridden slapfight, and fathering babies w/ the girl from the Blair Witch Project. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, A++++++++

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 4 August 2006 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

I only saw the ones where they entered the guy into a streetfighting contest and where they served liquor to high school students. Really good stuff indeed.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 4 August 2006 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

ilx sometime-poster lemin turned me onto this show, and i think it's great, even if casting danny devito was a bit of a mis-step on the producers' part. the abortion rally pick-up episode and the one where charlie gets "cancer" = GOLDEN

joseph (joseph), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

This show is great, although the first season was better. The second has been a little too wacky in its plotting - a little too "Seinfeld."

The other thread: It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

The Yellow Kid (The Yellow Kid), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

its def. Seinfeld/Curb Your Enthusiasm-style "mean people" humor - only with young hipsters instead of old, rich, middle-class Jews!

Its mildly entertaining but it always feels really forced to me. the characters are all just virtually interchangeable assholes, none of them have any identity (I chalk this up to poor writing)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

I had no idea this was the 2nd season!

Yeah, they all take turns being the asshole, but they're the asshole in different ways. Charlie's the loser asshole; Sweet Dee's the asshole w/ a vague conscience (and overactive libido); the good looking one's the suave asshole; and the bearded guy's the bro-down asshole.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

god, are we done with the "completely unlikable cast does completely unlikable things" show yet?

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

I could watch a TV show based in Philadelphia, or I could rub my face with rotting Chinese food.

I just downloaded the first season because I saw Danny DeVito on the Daily Show the other night. I thought it was good, certainly summer stop-gap good, but it's no Entourage.

okay, so despite my comment about rotting chinese food above, i got a bunch of promo copies of this in the mail. and it can be quite funny-- really like the one about welfare, and the gay bar episode, etc.

here's the thing: i am interviewing Dennis (the suave one) and Dee (the chick, Dennis' sister) tomorrow for a magazine. any questions anybody wants to ask?

Charlie is probably one of my most favorite TV characters ever. I, too, thought the second season was a little bit of a let-down. Good to hear they've gotten it back on track for the third.

chicago kevin, Monday, 22 October 2007 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

I couldn't believe that episode actually kept up the "is he or isn't he?" thing for so long

mh, Monday, 22 October 2007 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

This season has been as awesome as the first two so far, and Charlie is just amazing. I haven't laughed as painfully hard as anything all year than the "Day Man/Night Man" songs from the episode a couple weeks ago.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 28 October 2007 03:25 (seventeen years ago)

They might not make sense out of context, but:
Night Man
Day Man

charlie is the best actor on tv

chaki, Sunday, 28 October 2007 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

You're a master of karate and friendship for everyone!
I'm amazed at how Charlie's insane screaming ALWAYS makes me laugh. It should've gotten old and annoying by now, but it just gets better.
Great, great show (albeit uneven) and I'm so glad it's managed to last so long. I was sure it wouldn't get a second series, let alone a third, since I've heard so little talk about it.

Øystein, Sunday, 28 October 2007 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I love how they always find ways for Charlie to scream and Dennis to take off his shirt.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 29 October 2007 02:31 (seventeen years ago)

I've had "Dayman" stuck in my head all day at work today. I'll write a line of code, then a voice in my head goes "fighter of the night-man! (a-aa-aaaah)"
It might drive me insane, but it's fun.

I like this show! Season 4 is 4 episodes in already! "The Gang Solve the Gas Crisis" is one of the best of the whole series.

This might be the greatest scene I've ever witnessed on television:

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago)

Love the scene earlier in that episode when Charlie is explaining to Mac his system for sorting the mail.

BODY PROP (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:55 (sixteen years ago)

"Who Pooped the Bed?" is an incredible episode. WOLF HAIR.

BODY PROP (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

I've been a little disappointed with the last few weeks of episodes. The first set of episodes was pretty great, though - it all kind of peaked with "Mac & Charlie Die". I have to admit that scene above in the mailroom was amazing, though.

Nhex, Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

Tonight was fucking incredible. I didn't actually hear anything they said during the home invasion scene over my own laughter; all I really remember of it was Dennis holding the boombox.

BODY PROP (nickalicious), Friday, 14 November 2008 07:46 (sixteen years ago)

Charlie Kelly is inarguably one of my 5 favorite television characters of all time right behind John Locke and Patrick Star.

BODY PROP (nickalicious), Friday, 14 November 2008 07:47 (sixteen years ago)

Charlie's final song of the Nightman play was one of the most touching things I've ever heard...seriously.

New season Dec. 1:

It’s Always Sunny was ahead of the curve in showing how the gang would handle being in isolation while sick, airing the episode “The Gang Gets Quarantined” in 2013 during its ninth season. Now, there’s confirmation that the upcoming season will actually be set during the COVID pandemic.

The press release teases that the gang will “try to exploit pandemic aid, sidestep cancel culture, evade criminal justice, reflect on their origins, and reconcile their identities and homeland roots.” Oh and yeah, the gang somehow ends up in Ireland despite the global pandemic.

catching up on the last few seasons I missed, was worried this show'd gone downhill after S12 (or whichever one Dennis was missing for half of), but it recovered and is just as good as ever I think

second half of S15 (the Ireland episodes) were particularly good. the emotional bit at the end with Charlie actually got to me a little. I love how once or twice a season there will be some unexpectedly great acting. Dennis's psycho shit was legitimately unnerving too. only issue I had with it is there is no fucking way Charlie would have had a passport

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 December 2023 16:41 (one year ago)

the “what we were up to in 2020 with our pandemic loan” episode is probably my favorite comedic wrap-up of what it was like living through that year

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 5 December 2023 17:37 (one year ago)

Wow at that pilot.

There should be a streaming service just for pilots that were never picked up.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 December 2023 17:52 (one year ago)

Chad Coleman of the Wire got to you use this as a stepping stone into space and the Expanse I guess?

dan selzer, Tuesday, 5 December 2023 19:17 (one year ago)

They used to show unused pilots over the summer way back when; and they also recycled the scripts into episodes of Love, American Style when that show was on.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Tuesday, 5 December 2023 19:21 (one year ago)

feel like there could at least be a good YouTube channel out of that sort of thing. I love abandoned pilots because it's like a glimpse into an alternate TV reality. and a reminder that so many ubitiquitous long-running shows never would've happened had someone not liked that first episode.

weirdest one I've ever seen was called "Dog Police" - based on the novelty hit by the band of the same name - I think it's supposed to be cute but the prothestics were pure nightmare fuel. to make things even weirder, Adam Sandler and Jeremy Piven are in it! not as dogs, though

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 December 2023 19:21 (one year ago)

The pilot episodes of shows that were picked up and then completely re-shot are kind of an interesting oddity. Different casting choices are usually the main thing, because the network decided to place someone higher profile, or enough time passed that the actor from the pilot wasn't available

Always Sunny is basically medieval morality plays in that we constantly see terrible things happen to awful people as a direct consequence of their awfulness

The other shows from the leads have been ehh but my friends advocated for A.P. Bio and while it takes a while to escalate from "Dennis is a failed tenure guy and doesn't even pretend to teach high schoolers" it has some pretty decent pacing. I love the fact that central premises of the show are just pushed off, possibly forever (I've started season 2)

Just saw the first new album, the Abbott Elementary crossover. It was OK, but I was really distracting by all the actors inevitably getting sharpened, puffy or glammed up. Sometimes all three. Except DeVito, who looks the same.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 17 July 2025 21:59 (two weeks ago)

Lol first new episode

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 18 July 2025 00:23 (two weeks ago)

OK, the first three real episodes are top-notch, especially the one that is sort of simultaneously a parody of "Bringing Out the Dead" and "The Bear."

Oh, and related, Rob McElhenney belatedly, bizarrely, legally changed his name to Rob Mac.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 July 2025 18:53 (one week ago)

I kinda wasn't feeling that episode actually. Obv it had some moments but it seemed like they were trying to cover too many pop culture obsessions at once. Seems like they're leaning heavy on that this season. Bringing Out the Dead meets the Bear meets Hot Ones meets...I feel like there were more.

dan selzer, Thursday, 24 July 2025 20:02 (one week ago)

meets always sunny! they have previously had a cop car and now feels like there is a possibility they do a fireman episode

a hoy hoy, Friday, 25 July 2025 08:45 (one week ago)

This EMT episode does a classic Always Sunny overpacking bit -- doing several distinct plotlines that are linked by one insanely random and stupid thing that a subset of the group is doing. I'm intrigued and appalled by the idea that Charlie's running a ghost kitchen out of the apartment, but I want what's in those food delivery bags

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Monday, 28 July 2025 02:54 (five days ago)

The dumbest/funniest inciting incident this season so far is the water jug discussion.

My favorite Sunny trope is when there's one thing they fixate on for an entire episode but then never bring it up again, like the episode where they kept talking about everything being "jammed up" or the one this season where they're talking about making fist-talons of rage.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 28 July 2025 08:45 (five days ago)

BF got mad at me bcs right away in that prev episode I said "oh franks not in a coma, thats a cake", and says I ruined everything lol. I thought it was really obvious!

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 30 July 2025 05:10 (three days ago)

lol I had over thought it and figured Danny couldn't be there that day so they used jank CG to insert him into the scene!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 30 July 2025 06:45 (three days ago)

That's one of the great Always Sunny bits, where they introduce some dumb obsession that a character has at the beginning and while everyone else is doing something seemingly unrelated, it turns out that one character was still only thinking about one thing
