Do you partake og "girls drinks"? Which ones are best if you do?

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or even 'of'. Curse you Friday afternoon.

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I do. Orange Bacardi Breezer please.

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Get thee to an alcopops thread

I like Gin & Bitter Lemon, which is an old woman's drink. Num num.

N., Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did the Tup serve Peach Bacardi Breezer? That's the BEST flavour but it seems to have disappeared from most boozers.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I don't

Graham, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Smirnoff Ice yes especially at old-version Club Sussed where the draught brews were undrinkable and the alternative was horrible Rolling Rock.

Tom, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

... think I've had a beer since the ILE christmas party.

Now I am going back to bed.

Graham, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tonight I will be finally guzzling what I have craved for 31 long days i.e. white wine which is most definitely a girl's drink. 4 hours to go.....

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As the review on Pumpkin Publog says, the Tup is the only boozer I have been to that sold all seven Barcardi Breezer flavours. Yowsa!

Pete, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would draw a distinction between alcopops and "girls drinks" though. Is a Smirnoff Mule an alcopop? I mean it's got pop in it but youngsters shun it in favour of those that look more like fanta. Gin and bitter lemon is an old girls drink if you have it in a cockernee boozah.

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I *only* drink girls drinks. And Smirnoff Ice is my favorite as it rarely leaves you with a hangover.

Malcolm, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh pish and FIE this means I might have to go back to its evil ways when I need a fix. Thank god this time has not come... yet. Neither can I remember what I was drinking.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

really malcom? hmm. might have to rethink ye old kool-aid and malt liquor combo.

Samantha, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonnie, I agree with you but people ended up talking about Smirnoff Ice et al. on the alcopops thread anyway.

N., Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, OK. It looked quite a long thread so I decided to ignore it. My research capabilities have been eroded by MTV culture.

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

While I do see lots of 'men' drinking Smirnoff Ice etc. I would still maintain that it is a girl's drink. I am trying to think of an alcopop that is not a girl's drink. No, I can't.

What about JD & coke? I maintain this is very much a girl's drink from the time when I worked in a pub but it seems I am alone in thinking this. Southern Comfort / Archers & lemonade - now they are definitely girl's drinks but I hate them both. Also Baileys, yuck.

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

N. useful knowledge here is that Disco Dave is on the dangerous diet mentioned on other threads and is only drinking girls drinks, obviously he looks dead louche, holding a gin and bitter lemon in his bear's paw.

chris, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I drink Smirnoff Ice => It is a girl's drink

(I'm not here)

Graham, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never tried Smirnoff Ice but I have tried Bacardi Rigo - I'm not sure if this is a girls drink or an alcopop. Oooo, it's all so confusing isn't it.

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Jonnie5 Bacardi Rigo is RUFF - I recommend the Smirnoff Ice!

In Preston JD&COKE is a mangs drink but in the South who knows? Perhaps it is regional variation hmmm? Or perhaps my mate Jenky was odd.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oftentimes, i'm an absolute bastard for a gin and tonic. also cranberry breezer r best (not bleddy peach). smirnoff ice also nice. all top for the dancing to cheez choonz.

Trouble is i drink them too quick and get blindingly pissed and run out of cash, then sober up and realise i'm dancing to awful music.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

how is bud king of beers gendered? also does it question conventional notions of the constructions of desire

vodka and tonic = girly drink surely; i heart that

medium-size mark drank only snowballs: they are YUK!! but top for hostile-bloke eyeball action before i disdaned pubworld altogether c.1981 i think

mark s, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

American Bud = beer for 10 year olds ; )

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cranberry Bacardi Breezer is vile cough medicine and surely bears no relation to a) cranberries b) Bacardi c) breezes d) alcohol with all the pleasure it brings. It is neither a girl's drink nor a boy's drink but a madman / woman's drink.

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can only remember drinking Bacardi Breezers at old fashioned Club Sussed, Tom, but maybe that's my aversion to drinking Smirnoff Ice, ie an alco-pop for people who don't like alco-pops. (cf. Kylie...)

Vodka and Tonic also ace.

alext, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mmm, Benylin

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Benylin an alcopop? Or a girl's drink? I think Benylin is for men and Sudafed is for girls.

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the way Emma brackets together madmen and women upthread.

N., Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shelly used to drink Benylin = man's drink.

Pete, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is clearly meant to imply madmen / madwomen for the benefit of any PEDANTS around here.

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does Benylin still come with a free spoon or have they upgraded to a tumbler yet?

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Spoon'? 'Tumbler'? You're meant to drink it straight from the bottle!

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You are so SUSSED! Emma = drinker of Benylin from bottle.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was referring to the time I drank Sudafed (note - girl's cough medicine) straight from the bottle at work without reading the label, then went to the pub. It was trippy, man. Also it was a great appetite suppressant (and my appetite takes a hell of a lot of suppressing), I would use it as a diet aid were it not for the fact that it tastes so vile.

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Campari'n'orange. Yum yum yum. And am a girl so it's okay. And I lurve JD & Coke so perhaps is very girly.

Bailey's yuck yuck yuck. Especially when dropped in pint of guinness or as a port chaser. Grim.

What about girls who like bitter and stout? I used to lurve Camfrey's or whatever it was called....Calley's/Camley's/Camtrey's fuckit.

Wilfred the Beagle, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm v partial to a dark rum'n'coke. Mmmmm

misterjones, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AHEM I cannot let this lie, BENYLIN is much bettah than Sudafed! The non drowsy stuff is of course poop but the drowsy stuff straight from bottle is the tastiest thing EVAH. When Alix and I were sick we watched HISTORY programmes and drank from our respective bottles of Benylin and HOWLED AT THE MOON oh ahem that may have just been the full moon instead of floo - I meant, howled in agony at the pain we were in, uh, where was I? Yes, Benylin is bettah. Drinking straight from the bottle is of course the only way to do it.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Carvol less trippy, sweeter and Junior Carvol positively delicious. Mind you - I like Night Nurse, so perhaps my palate is less than refined.

Wilfred the Beagle, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma! Cough medicine abuse! How decadent. I recall the time I was struck down with a horrible flu whilst on holiday in venice, and I swigged a whole bottle of italian Night Nurse. I had a warm, kind of cuddly evening sitting on my bed with a friend while the room went all golfish bowl. It's a fish eye perspective thang.

Weird.

misterjones, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

just remembered that for some curious teenaged logic i started drinking pernod and blackcurrant when i was 14 or 15. stopped after a couple of months when realised it was not so manly. tho prob drop in ocean compared to being brainy swot with a 48k spectrum who did gymnastics. (yes alan was a gurl, with long hair and everything)

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A good mate of mine at college used to keep Benylin by the bed so he could take a swig on waking to help his smoker's cough. I suspect that many smokers are secret cough medicine junkies.

And Sarah I didn't say Sudafed was better just that it is for girls and Benylin for boys, the clue is in the names BENylin and SUdafed. Do you see?

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are cosmopolitans' 'girls' drinks'? If so, then I am happily guilty.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't know what a cosmopolitan was in the drinks world so I googled it and it said something about it being for tarts.

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pernod and blackcurrant

What thinketh the Gothfynder General to this revelation?

RickyT, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No! Cosmopolitans are very classy (this from a girl who admits to having an addiction to Sudafed, but really, trust me on this). They are girl's drinks. I think martinis are boy's drinks.

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AHEM last time I was UPSTAIRS AT THE GARAGE I was quite poor and whoever was DJing was CRAP so of course it was time to go to the bar. Ack! No pence! So what do I order?

'Shot of Pernod and glass of TAP water please' and it was NOT BAD.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cosmopolitan = martini for girls.

Dan Perry, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pernod = yes. Black = no never in a month of Gothick Sundays. (See also Snakebite and BLACK, and Guinness & Black!!!)

Pete, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Almost pub time.....

Pete, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Edna W and I like taking big bottles of Vermouth to parties. It is not true that we co-ordinate the colours in advance.

the pinefox, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was on orange Reefs all last night. I really am turning in to a gurl.

Graham, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In London if you ask for "a martini" what do you get? (NB this isn't a joke)

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
i got a Smirnoff Ice 22oz. and god is it terrible.

Amon (eman), Sunday, 12 June 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

i always think of balki when i think of smirnoff

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 12 June 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

Urgh. I once drank a six-pack of Smirnoff Ice in quick succession. I've never felt so heavy and sickly sweet.

I used to drink these when liquor seemed inappropriate (I dislike beer), but strangely never got made fun of in any bar I frequented.
