Francois Ozon's unlikeable-fashion-fotog-dying-of-cancer film "Time to Leave"

...starring the Loveliest Frenchman, the dark and lithe Melvil Poupaud, as a vain prick who drives nearly everyone in his life away after getting his diagnosis and rejecting chemotherapy. The lead performance (and Jeanne Moreau's cameo as his sensualist grandmother) is impressive, but there are a few narrative hooks that are amazingly contrived (the main one may not pass the giggle test) -- best to assume the last 20 minutes are meant to be abstract, but I can't quite convince myself. Still, it's refreshing to see a character in a terminal situation portrayed as selfish, unlikeable ... human.

(Also, the three principle sex scenes, quite different in tone and choreography, are among the most convincing I've seen in a long while.)

intrigued! is it out in NY already?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, has been for about 3 weeks. Doesn't seem to be doing particularly well at the b.o. (the Francophiles have less grim stuff like the new Techine to flock to).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

but the one good thing (cinematically) about living in montreal is we're supposed to get the french films first!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 7 August 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

maybe this one went to the gay meccas first (so, still).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 7 August 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

swagula (Lamp), Friday, 10 September 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, I liked Le Refuge, titled Hideaway in the US. Better than the new silly Potiche, tho Deneuve wears awful clothes with gumption:

Hey Look More Than Five Years Has Passed And You Have A C (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 14:03 (fourteen years ago)

a mixed bag, but I laughed a lot at the effects in the middle.

I'd like to second the above statement as much as possible.

I was NOT expecting to enjoy Potiche so much. Watching Deneuve and Depardier reminded me what I love about star turns.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 22 July 2011 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

they had a couple cute moments, but ugh overall. Gerard, count the calories.

you call it trollin' i call it steamrollin' (Dr Morbius), Friday, 22 July 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

i also enjoyed potiche much more than i thought i wld - the film beautifully captures the feel of 70s popular european cinema, and the guy playing the husband is superb.

And here I thought you didn't discriminate against the obese.

not really Hitchcocky, but yes

Never Coming to a Theater Near You: Arthouse Cinema 2013

ballin' from Maine to Mexico (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 21:52 (twelve years ago)

yeah, I liked it a lot! lots of meta shenanigans tho so it depends on your tolerance for that. There even seemed to be a kind of nod to the latter novels of john barth - not just author-character interaction but also cutting away to a bourgeois couple commenting on the text. Lot of fun literary gags in there too.

la mord de l'auteur (wins), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 21:56 (twelve years ago)

sounds closer to Chabrol

last shot pretty hitchcocky! xp

Alfred might like this one for the lit/academic themes and model-beautiful teen antihero.

anyone seen Young and Beautiful?

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 May 2014 01:40 (eleven years ago)

yeah, its not as good as the lana del rey song, but its ok, id prob be fine if rampling got a best supporting oscar nom for the 4 or w/e mins shes in it @ the end

johnny crunch, Thursday, 22 May 2014 01:52 (eleven years ago)

Yup. Blogged about it. (third from the top) It isn't really my thing, but I liked how it depicted everybody else's horror and mistrust at the young girl, after they begin perceiving her as a whore. It's more insightful about the fears and desires of the supporting characters than it is about 17-year old girls, I suspect.

Frederik B, Thursday, 22 May 2014 01:53 (eleven years ago)

it def does get marginally more interesting in her resultant age-appropriate relationship & its conclusion. it feels like a few chapters of a longer novel or something, which i guess is admirable

johnny crunch, Friday, 23 May 2014 14:52 (eleven years ago)

Okay is right. I thought Rampling added more pathos than was needed, actuallly.
