Rechargeable Batteries

I was in the Post Office waiting in line when I saw one of those battery recharging units with batteries, these to be exact:

The charger also worked with 9V and AAA size, and so would be perfect for effects pedals (9V) and for digital audio recorders / keyboards / tacky kid's toys (AA), all of which chew them up reasonably fast.

However, closer inspection of the AA batteries reveals that they are 1.2 volts, not 1.5 like normal batteries.

What the fuck's with this and will they work? Are there any rechargeable ones which are 1.5v?

waste of money

Really? I go through 2x AA's for every 3-5 hours of recording.

i use mine for my bike lights and cd player, it's saved me shitloads of cash. i have no idea what voltage they are though.

I use those for my camera, MP3 player, remote controls - basically everything I own that uses AA/AAA batteries. I don't understand about voltage but they're fine, and definitely money-saving.

Make sure they're not Cadmium and you're fine.

Thanks, but what about the voltage issue? Is this going to ruin delicate gear?

I think AA rechargables are always 1.2V rather than 1.5V and there's some leeway anyway: batteries don't deliver a constant voltage across their life.

(Googling tells me that the voltage of an alkaline battery will drop linearly from 1.5V to about 0.7V, and then cut off. A rechargeable battery will deliver 1.2V to 1.0V output .)
